Solaris

It is the year 2564 and the world is at war. The global ban on weapons of mass destruction has prevented a nuclear apocalypse, so far, but even more dangerous weapons have been created, as a result. While, officially, the GEAR Alliance is controlled jointly by its three most powerful nations, it is actually the private army of the multinational Clockwork Corporation. Just so, it is their technology that spearheads GEAR forces. Despite this, the public sees it only as patriotism, and will believe any lie that Clockwork Corp. gives them.

That is how they built their weapons. Cyber-bionic enhancements have existed for year; however, they were wildly impractical, costing millions of dollars per soldier and consuming more than their fair share of precious energy. That is, until recently. Several years ago, Clockwork Corp. scientists developed a series of rapidly improving enhancements. Thousands of citizens from the various GEAR nations vanished without a trace, to be used as test subjects for the new systems.

The Alliance heads simply blamed the disappearances on terrorism. Soon enough, though, the process had been refined enough for mass production. It was then that Clockwork Corp announced its “Project Solaris” to the world. Solaris can be officially summed up as follows: the Corporation takes in unwanted or orphaned infants and trains them to perform various jobs in the military, as opposed to living in the streets or an under-funded orphanage. Unofficially and unknown to the public, though, “growth” cybernetic enhancements are implanted within the infants.

The newly developed “growth” property means that, as the children grow and change, so do the implants. The only negative side effect is insatiable hunger, which is caused by the implants’ energy consumption and need for materials to expand. Upon reaching maturity, however, this hunger dies down, and the implants are completely integrated with the bodies’ normal tissue. It is a highly effective process, yet, with new research in genetic engineering, even it was improved. Soon, many of Solaris’ infants were grown in laboratories.

No one seemed to notice this transition. The general improvement of the students at the Solaris Academy, however, was not missed. They rapidly became the main force of the GEAR army. Some among them, though, stood out far more than any of the others. These special few became known as the Hours.

They are the top twelve, and they have no equal; the shining leaders of the Solaris program. Their success, alone, blinds the public to Clockwork Corp’s crimes. Nonetheless, some of those standing in the light are beginning to see their shadows…

Basic Information

Well, basically, I got bored one day. I'm in the process of writing a book (142 pages, so far gonk ), and I'm already writing another in my head, as well as an Inuyasha fanfic, in my spare time. I just came back from vacation, and, guess what, I spent the entire time reading the Swords Trilogy. As to be expected, I am now completely sick of fantasy, particularly if it involves anyone that is even remotely connected to K'sahn Dyaer or another reincarnating hero. So, I decided to go back to my roots: SciFi, particularly comics. As you can see in my sig, I intend to do a web comic, eventually (much less writing), but, to prepare, I've decided to do a prologue here. This RP will occur a few years before the comic, just as several of the main characters graduate from Solaris Academy.

Factions

Clockwork Corporation: You knew it was coming. Clockwork Corp is the evil company that is trying to take control of the world. By clever manuevering, it controls the entire GEAR Alliance. Not only that, but it also has the most advanced technology in the world. Not all that work for the Corporation are evil, though, even if they are on the inside.

GEAR: While actually a puppet of Clockwork Corp, no one actually notices that anything is awry: it seems to be an ordinary military alliance, fighting to establish itself as the world's governing body.

AXEL: The opposing alliance. They seem no different from GEAR, save that their technology isn't as advanced, and it is causing them to be defeated.

Night Hammer: "Patriots." Night Hammer is a terrorist organization made up of those who discovered Clockwork's dirty secrets- and lived to tell the tale. They currently have a hand in the international black market, and fight against both Clockwork and AXEL.

Powers

As this roleplay is sci-fi, the cyborg and genetically-engineered characters will be allowed to have a certain number of unhuman powers. The limits on these powers, however, are determined by which side they're on.

Clockwork Corporation: The Solaris soldiers that show exceptional skills can accquire addtional implants later in life, which seamlessly bond with the originals. In addition, certain infants with strong genes may be chosen for unusual or prototype implants. Generally, these infants are often subjected to experimentation and intense propaganded, as well. As the most wealthy and powerful organization in the world, their personal soldiers often have expensive upgrades that give them extrordinary, or in the case of the Hours, godlike powers.

GEAR: GEAR's standard soldiers can range from ordinary people to genetically- or cybernetically-enhanced supersoldiers, though these cyborgs are often made more cheaply than Clockwork's elite. Nonetheless, the soldiers with genetic-based enhancements tend to perform better than usual, having to work harder to keep up with their cyborg allies.

AXEL: Axel is the least technologically adept of all the forces. Their implants don't have the growth factor and have remained bulky. As a result, only physically-strong, fully-grown candidates are chosen. This weakness has become a strength, however, since their cyborgs are often juggernauts on the battlefield. The other weakness of such soldiers, though, is the small number of years that they can fight. As a result, many of AXEL's implants are scavengable. Genetic research is also primitive, and is generally just used in medical applications.

Night Hammer: As a large force in the international black market, the few Solaris soldiers that defect to Night Hammer have access to a wide variety of parts from both GEAR and AXEL, as well as parts that are "unusual" or "unethical". Fast-acting genetic mutagens are also available, for a pretty price.

Classes
Well, it's about time I got to doing this. More will be added later, as well.

Dreadnaught: Clockwork Corp's heavy infantry. Generally speaking, they weigh much more than the standard cyborg and often have powerful weaponry, other than their massive physical strength. Many also have weather-resistant skin.

Fighter: Highly mobile scouts. More than standard infantry, fighters weigh as much as regular people, yet some are even stronger than other specialized cyborg models. Flight is a common function, though it is occasionally replaced with light-to-midweight weapons systems, and as a result, all have heat-resistant, nonflammable skin and lighter, stronger bones. Radar jamming equipment is standard issue, and as well as variety of other equipment, such as electromagnets.

Juggernaut: AXEL's Counter to the dreadnaught. While is is possible for them to create a dreadnaught, the technology is still in the early stages and, there are curently only prototypes. The primary difference between the two is that the juggernaut sacrifices armamament for sheer brute strength, often sacrificing many organing parts, even skin, for cheaper mechanical parts.

Linker: Elite hacker. Like the fighter, the linker is difficult to distinguish from a normal human. Linkers, however, often have much of the space typically used for weapons filled with computer systems dedicated to the various tasks involved in hacking. Occasionally, though, these computers can be focused on tasks other than hacking, or even not specialized at all. As a result, a small percentage of linkers become diplomats and tacticians.
