The idea is to set up the expectation of an obvious rhyme, and then subvert it with another word that makes sense but does not rhyme. This was inspired by a singing game my children and I invented, which we call The Rhyming Song (which doesn't).
The object is to raise the expectation of a rhyme and cruelly dash that expectation with a non-rhyming synonym, or at least a non-rhyming likely alternative. Examples:
The ship had long been far from shore and so there came a time
a sailor had the scurvy and to cure it ate a kiwi.
The whole crew was near dying when the wind began to fail
in doldrums they lay for a year and a day and the ship refused to go.
The bosun raised a mutiny; they threw him in the brig.
He languished there with a lonely air and smoked another herring.
