I've noticed that when I talk, if I'm not careful, I tend to ramble and drift from topic to topic, based on connections only I seem to make. When I talk to most people, this is regarded as strange (its certainly not the norm for them). However, when I talk to other aspies, they talk the same way, and I've had some rather long conversations where we drift from topic to topic almost randomly, and they make the same connections as I do.

It was the first time I've had a conversation that seemed normal from my point of view.

Is anyone else like this? Are we ALL like this?

Yep, I do have those problems, even on IM I tend to do that when trying to talk to people.

I think a lot of people have conversations where they segue into other topics, perhaps the "norm" is a more natural segue, such as "basketball to baseball to a certain baseball player on TV, to TV shows" whereas what you're talking about is a bit more of an internal leap, like "basketball to TV shows," bypassing all the stuff in between.

I think I tend to do both ways, depending on who I'm talking to, but I certainly come out with what other people consider to be really random unrelated topics pretty often. I actually had a teacher who would tell me what I was bringing up in art critique was not related to what we were presently discussing, and thus ignored my comments rolleyes

I think it's the associational brain autistics tend to have.. say one thing and it reminds me of something else that probably has nothing to do with you, like my brother was talking about trying to find Osama and suddenly I'm thinking about this guy who was living in the Providence Place mall who's just been found out. I try to preface these sort of thoughts with some sort of goofy transition such as "this isn't really related, but it made me think of.." just so people don't go WTF? all the time eheh.

But yeah, I've been asked if I have ADD because I tend to jump around topics like that, also.

Same here, I do that a lot without even knowing. I tend to talk about things, then to something else then go back on topic, I also don't make sense at times.

That's the two of us.

Not that it was too bothersome, because when I used to hang out with my friends, we always had these random conversations where you just keep pondering about nothing in particular. Naturally, I was the king of random talk. biggrin

That used to be in high school, but in college I try to keep my choice of subjects rather constrained. For example, if we're talking about the wireless network at college and I make a connection with wardriving, and then with speeding on the freeway (like I always do biggrin ), I say to myself "there ain't no cars and they've not been mentioned yet, so STFU!".

Almost all my friends have AS (or if not, they at least have ADD/ADHD in some form). We talk like that a lot, actually, but we think it totally normal, for the most part. ^.^

Me and my brother coverd twenty topics in about nineteen minutes while walking, including why the crap we do that. I really hate it because I forget why I got to that subject.

Seriously? That's awesome. Me and my SO do that at lunch at school a lot, and it's so fun.

My friend from NJ likes how random I am on aim. People tell me I'm random IRL, but these days it's because I am quiet and then burst out something that I just thought of. It is random because I am having my own train of thought separate from their conversation. But sometimes people still think I'm random in a conversation. But it's to be expected... they can't see your train of thought. I dunno, I think some people are just boring and only say predictable things. There is no point in saying predictable things.

I do that too sometimes but I think it's just because my brain seems to go into hyper mode when I finally open up and start talking. The hard part for me is while i'm trying to get comfortable enough to start talking with everyone else, my brain is answering to the stuff going on in the conversation. I'm not saying any of it just thinking what I would say if I joined the convo. When I finnaly do, my head still has all those thoughts piled up and i'm sitting there trying to play catch up and say what I had wanted to and wind up drifting from topic to topic. Most of the time it's follow-along-able but sometimes.. it's just really random.

I don't know of any strange speaking habits I might have, besides speaking really, really fast.

I do that too if i'm not paying attention or i'm really into a topic. It's like my brain is processing super fast and I have to talk faster to keep up so I can say everything I want/need, the only problem is that if I do that then everything starts to get jumbled. sweatdrop
