Kainda strayed from the main group, following her nose - and interesting scent had enticed the canine. Something new, something she'd never smelled before, some type of fruit that she'd yet to sample. The wolf did this every now and again and usually came back quick enough so no one really worried. Besides, she spent most of her time away from the lions scouting out the land and rallying other creatures to join them. This was just a break from the lonely road for her, a few days walking alongside her friends.
But like a domestic dog strays from it's owners in a field, so now she strayed from the traveling pride. Except no one owned Kainda. Well, I suppose in one way you could say her bonded Muroki owned her but then you'd have to say she owned him as well...and you'd have entirely missed the point of their relationship. Completely missed the mark. Way off.
So, of course, had the pair of young vultures who watched her misunderstood it. Joking about rude and vulgar ways a lion and wolf could 'bond', they waited for her to wander too far so they could have another go at killing the pesky creature. They'd worked out at last how Muroki and his band kept growing when the hated lion didn't stray far from his companions.
It was the wolf. The second she left them to gather more creatures or she followed a scent too far...they were going to kill the wolf.

Adanna had enjoyed her days of traveling. But it seemed they were coming to an end once again. But this time things were different; instead of settling into the lazy pridelands she was going home! Not home exactly, since it was a piece of the desert she hadn't lived in, but it was still the same desert, the same terrian. She was exstatic. She had known they were close...so close!...so she had let her family rest and gone to scout ahead, sort of. She just couldn't contain herself. So she kept up a very quick lope, savoring the feel of the warm sands under her paws at last.
Shantanu, never leaving her bonded, wheeled overhead. The large eagle kept on eye on her surroundings. They were indeed close, because at her altitude she could spot the pride of lions far in the distance...and a familiar speck much closer.

The trail ended, and Kainda stopped in her tracks, tail wagging. She may not have found whatever had left such an aroma, but it had been interesting nonetheless, and with the pride just starting into the arid lands before the desert-proper....well, she hoped to come across many smells she hadn't come across in a while. And maybe more of that fruit-scent, whatever it was.
Finished tracking for now, she turned to go catch up with the others - just as the first vulture dive bombed her, knocking her on her side with a yelp before it winged it's way skyward again.

"Miss Adanna!" Shantanu cried from above, dipping low so that her bonded could hear her better. "I believe someone is being attacked just up ahead, can you see? I think it's that friend I mentioned!"
Ada squinted and saw, in the distortion of the heat, the flickering shapes of what her avian friend was talking of. Not needing any further confirmation she rushed forward, breathing out into a speedy sprint across the shifting sands. She might not have been the strongest of her family, but she was definately the quickest. Finally the fight came into a clearer view as she drew near and she roared fiercely, "OI! Bird brain! Lay off before I tear those feathers off your a**!"

Kainda for her part, had rolled back onto her feet. To go down under a vulture, with it's claws seeking your vulnerable belly and it's beak your neck or skull...well, it was an easy way to die and hard to defend yourself. Also one of the lanky wolf's worst nightmares. Especially after her recent week with Fumbi.
Instinctively she scrambled up and ran towards Adanna, knowing lions who were roaring and hurling abuse at your attackers were generally friends. Or enemies of your enemies, which are about the same thing. The second bird took a dive and missed, landing and struggled to get airborne, screaming.

Adanna, seeing the idiots with feathers were not listening, took her chance. She jumped at the struggled bird claws out stretched and fangs bared. She went for whatever she could reach, whether it be wings, tail, or the torso. She didn't, however, aim to kill. Seriously injure, maybe, but what was the point of killing it? She wasn't going to eat it! She might eat almost anything but...she wasn't that desperate.
Shantanu took his opertunity to put her wings to work. She wheeled about and propelled herself in the air towards the other birds. Being a fairly large eagle herself, her claws would be quite deadly should she get ahold of her fellow avian.

It was over quickly, since the birds were few and surprised at the sudden attack for they had expected an easy kill of the hated wolf.
"Scum you are! Scum!" One bird was down, less scary now it was on the ground and it was bedraggled and bleeding from Adanna's blows. It just screamed and flopped awkwardly, flapping one wing and dragging on that seemed broken. It turned a beedy eye skyward as its mate tried to fly away from the eage as fast as it could - and squarked at the betrayal of being left to die at a lioness' paws.
"Thankyou thankyou..." Kainda mean while had steadied herself and whined thanks as she licked her wound, standing on three legs and lapping at a talon cut.

At this point Adanna paid the bird little mind. It wasn't going to be doing any more damage and wasting life wasn't one of her specialties. Instead she loped over to the wolf, her ears perked attentively and her eyes narrowed in skeptisism, "What the hell was that all about? I've never seen vultures attack the liv'n before!" It just wasn't natural. She was used to the buzzards hanging around kills and such but...she hadn't ever seen something like that. It was strange and she wasn't afraid to say so.
Shantanu quickly came back as the birds left. Her place was with her bonded, not chasing after other avians. She came to land at Ada's side, her talon's oddly balanced in the sand.

"They're some of the birds from the Temple. They're not like normal buzzards - they fight and they keep slaves to hunt for them. I'm an enemy of theirs since our clan wants to free any slaves and drive them from our home."
She explained, pausing between sentences to lick at her cut a few more times. Seemed clean enough but she didn't like to think where those talons had been. Explination and cleaning came to an end at the same time and she raised her head to smile at the pair. Kainda was obviously surprised as she recognised one of her rescuers, now things had calmed down somewhat.
"Shantanu, good to see you again. This is your bonded?"

Shantanu smiled and bowed her head, "Yes, this is Adanna. Miss Ada, this is Kainda, she is the one I told you about. The one who is a messenger for your ancestor's pride."
"So we're finally here then?" Ada exclaimed with a grin on her face, "Whooah! Bout time, not that I mind the walking or anything, you know I'm a bit of a frequent walker and all. But I'm sure the boy'll be happy. Nukta can stop complaining now, though the heat won't change a bit, haha!" She swished her tail, seeming pleased despite the fact that she had just been in a brief skirmish of sorts.

"Ah, not quite. The grass is thinning out yes, but there's still five or six days walk through the desert proper to the Oasis. And if you go too far of course there's no more water for twice that."
"If you're coming with the pride, you and your Nukta should join up with our group. Safety in numbers and all that. " Kainda flexed her paw and felt the cut sting, and mused on this. She herself wouldn't wander far from the main group again. It looked like the vultures had got her number now.
"You'd be very very welcome."

Ahhh, so they weren't there yet? Ada shrugged. Gave her more time to stretch her legs! Hah! "Well, if that's the case, I best go get the boys. Then we'll come along after ya." With that the lioness turned, loping back the way she had come. She wouldn't have to go far. It was just typical of her; she liked to run ahead. She'd find her mate and sons and have them hussle up a bit. It was about time they caught up with the pride.
Shantu paused, glancing at her canine friend, "If you fear the vultures will return, you're free to come with us. If not, I wish you a safe trip, friend. We will be with you soon." She then took flight, scattering grains of sand from her claws as she jumped intot he wind.

Kainda nodded and called a farewell. Then she swiftly turned tail and sprinted back towards the journeying lion group. It was no longer safe for her to wander alone and especially in her condition. As she ran she winced at the thought of how Muroki would react when he saw her cuts and bruises - she'd have to tell him. And she had to make the lions stop moving for a while so Ada, Shantanu and the rest of their family could catch up.
The vultures watched, angrily, as both sets of creatures left the scene. Next time, they'd get that Kainda. Until then, the little wolf was safe, travelling with the others.
End.
