Harry Potter.

Boy wizard.

Attends a school of magic.

These three facts have caused Christians worldwide to campaign for the books to be banned from school libraries and hold book burnings ( gonk ). There are those like Jack Chick, owner of Chick Publications (www.chick.com), your friendly neighbourhood Christian fundamentalist maniac, who states that "the Harry Potter books are opening a gateway which will pour untold millions of kids into hell". My Christian friends have tried to convince me to stop reading them and get rid of my copies of the books, telling me that I'm going to Hell. I'd hate to know what they'd say if they knew I was a fan of Buffy, Charmed and The Dresden Files, too...

Why?

Anyway. Why do so many Christians hate Harry Potter? The most common reason presented is "Witchcraft is evil". Okay. Harry Potter's depiction of magic as something that is not evil and dark and hideous is the main reason. Another reason is that the series' alleged pagan imagery is dangerous to children. Riiiight. "It's not Christian, so it's dangerous", is that it? News flash: paganism is not synonymous with demonic worship. I should know. And what pagan imagery? The closest thing to pagan imagery in Harry Potter is a depiction of creatures from folklore! Manticores, chimaeras, Veela, leprechauns... Another is that the books may lead children to begin practicing witchcraft. First of all, witchcraft is not an altogether negative thing. As a practicing witch (FYI, the word can be used for either gender), I can tell you that witchcraft is mainly herbal medicine, common sense and psychology. What people call "spells" are really a form of prayer. There are a great many other arguments, but these are the main ones: depiction of witchcraft, pagan imagery and temptation to pursue the Dark Arts.

Ridiculous, saith I.

My Rebuttal:

The Harry Potter books are actually very Christian. To quote Fr. Peter Fleetwood, an official of the Pontifical Council for Culture, J.K. Rowling is "Christian by conviction, is Christian in her mode of living, even in her way of writing." She is a practicing Christian, people. Her books are extremely useful in teaching Christian tenets and virtues: humility, love, sacrifice, choosing the right over the easy, triumph of good over evil, not giving up one's ideals and never bending the knee to tyrants. Addressing the matter of witchcraft: listen, people. As I've said before, witchcraft is basically being good with herbs, being sensible and being understanding, knowing how peoples' minds work. Witchcraft and magic are two different things: witchcraft is helping people, magic is prayer. And onto the weighty matter of temptation to practice Dark Magic. Listen to me. Yes, the Harry Potter books depict magic - both Dark and non-Dark. There are blood sacrifices, frightening rituals, drinking the blood of animals, sacrificing human flesh to return a Dark Lord to his body. This, however, will not lead to children practicing dark magic. The books are very clear on this distinction: Dark Magic, magic used to injure and destroy, magic used to pervert nature is wrong. It is anathema. It is morally, ethically, fundamentally wrong. Hence the term "Dark Magic". And as for those who say all magic is bad... well, I can carve myself a wand from rowan or oak, point it at someone and say "Sectumsempra" but that won't slice and dice them, will it? If I want to curse someone, I tell them I've cursed them - and then take responsibility for the next bit of misfortune to come their way. That is the way curses work.

Exactly what I've been saying, except for the whole knowledge about the witchcraft stuff.

How can they take The Onion as truth??? it's the onion. . . the same people who had an intense discussion on weather or not we should revert back to "the primeval age where males and females had sex with wild abandon". The same people who made a fake news story on country singers saying that they don't care if they bomb new york and (quoted from the song) "Where you can easily get in and introduce a wild disease spreading bacteria into the immunicible water supply:. . . Not making this up:

Harry Potter is not bad. It's a book/movie. If someone decides to get into witchcraft (WHICH IS BAD) that was on their own accord. NOt J.K. Rowlings fault its just a story

Tivo (in case you don't know) is a machine that you set up in your home and it records stuff for you. You can pause, fast forward (though only to stuf that has already happened), rewind, and record almost any show. It's pretty cool.

You can choose what to record, how many shows to record it, and even get a season pass for it. It's pretty cool.
