Now I know Marching Band should be a sport considering that yo-yoing is a sport. But isn't the marching the only real sportish (my new word) part of it. If you consider the music that your making and the preformance that your giving isn't it more of an art. If the music is not interesting then we are just a bunch of funny looking people running around like chickens with our heads cut off.

At my high school we don't worry about competing(sp?) against other bands, we compete against only our selves. Sure having nice tall shiny trophies are cool, but after two, three when everyone graduates then they just sit on shevles collecting dust. We don't try to be better than another band we try to be better than the band that we were yesterday and the day before that.

I would like you to tell me your point of view on whether Marching Band is a sport or more of a physical art.

i say its both.
i believe that we work like a sport. practices. marching. blah blah blah.

Yes, I see how you can look at it that way it is just no body ever seems to understand just how hard we have to work to get it to look as good as it does. All the football team works to do is to run faster, and hit harder. We have to be able to turn this way and one count later be going this way etc. and they just don't get that.

I agree, it's both. Sure we're really physical and stuff, but the band room is still in the arts wing of the school, ya know?

I'd consider it a performance sport. It's a sport considering that their are competitions(either it be within yourselves or with other bands), There are rules that the bands have to follow, you have to have endurance, dedication, perseverance, and patience.

The performance comes from the music and the color guard flag and weapon work.

So instead of just saying it's an art form or it's a sport. It's really a performance art.

I mean it's the only art form where you end up sweaty when you're done. lol.

Despite it being a hell of a lot less detail-orientated and competitive like in HS, my college band shows are always high-gear in terms of energy (average tempo for BOTH shows for me this year is 180-200 BPM), and then there's the mental and stretching component (clearing 1 1/2 yard lines diagonally in 10 counts), but I really get a good workout from all of it.

If you think about it, marching band is just as art as it is a competitive sport. I mean, look at football. They may look like mindless muscle-bound dudes slamming in to each other, but they have to perform in front of a huge crowd just like we do, and with almost the same amount of mental ability.

I like the way you say almost.

I say it's both.

The practices, the competition, that's very sporty.
But the actual performance is art.

sport–noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.
Marching band is a sport by definition.. but i also think it could be considered a form of art.

I agree with ayone who thinks its both. It does take a lot of mental capacity(which football players often times lack) mrgreen to march 5 yards in 10 counts.

Yay! You actually know the definition of a sport!!! There's more you could have added of course, there usually is, but I completely agree with what you're saying. Oh...and before I just said that it was a performing art AND a sport, but I like you term of "performance sport" so I've kinda been using it. XD But yeah, we get into debates about this a lot at our school and a lot of people don't understand that among many other things...plus nobody wants to reason rationally...

I think most of the people here agree that it is both, or in other words a "performance sport" so we're basically preaching to the choir...

Yea our band is the same way and i would consider marching band both a sport and an art i mean because we practice for HOURS every dayduring the summer just like a football team or a soccer team mabey even more than those so i would definately consider it a sport but it is definately an art. a well performed show is just like a famous painting it deserves to be appreciated
