I would like to start by saying that this topic is somewhat more general, and not really specific to just Naruto, or even pairings from the show. However, I hope that won't warrant me any stare 's from anyone.
Now onto the topic: In romances and parings, especially homosexual pairings, why does there always seem to be a dominant (seme) and a submissive (uke)? It seems to me that pairings that focus only on these aspects are devoid of any emotional connection or true love. Sure they do add sex appeal, but why go on that alone?
Another thing I noticed in seme-uke pairings is that it always seems to be the same person as the dominant one or the submissive one, like they're never intended to be anything different.
What I would like to see is maybe a little bit more equality. I mean, how original is a story or drawing with Sasuke as the seme and Naruto as the uke (since that seems to be the morst quintessential example I can think of)? So, maybe instead of Neji on top, we could see Shikamaru take his role in that relationship. Something as simple as letting the two people in a relationship "take turns" or become more equal can only heighten the emotional connection and romance.
So, I want to know what you guys think. Agree? Disagree? I'm not trying to bash anyone with what I'm saying; all I want to do is express my opinion and see if anyone else feels the same or not.
If you didn't bother to read and consider what I'm saying, or at least skim through it, then just don't post. Saying how "long" this is or posting "tl;dr" just wastes bandwidth. So please, just go to a different topic if that's the case with you. Thank you.

Iruka/Kakashi. One of the few popular examples where the seme/uke parts switch constantly.
I've always prefered stories where the canon dominate plays a more submissive role. It's more interesting.

I agree. It it interesting, to say the least, when the normally dominant one is submissive.

I don't particularly care for canon dominant playing the submissive role, but I still think that only one person should be constantly dominant. Or could be for that matter. It would depend on the situation. There would probably wind up being a predominantly dominant person, but they'd still take turns. After all, if one person is always dominant, then they'd probably get pretty tired pretty quickly.

It's hard to find pairings that focus more on growth for both partners than for just one. Relationships are relationships no matter who is involved, and one can't do it alone. NejiHina is almost always Neji dominant and Hinata submissive. I know that is how her character is, but she rarely becomes stonger or more confident on her own.

Well I think that one of them would be more dominant most of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love it when they take turns and switch it up (especially in my precious KakaIruk heart ) but I think one person would usually have the more dominant personality. Not always and not in every pairing but that's just my opinion!! biggrin

I would have to say that I agree with you. I like to see some variety in seme/uke thing. I think it's interesting to see both of them take on a dominant role. I feel that way with a lot of the canon pairings... It makes for a more interesting read when both of the people in the couple have an effect on the other that makes them submissive. I like when they both have weaknesses. But that is my opinion. I agree that pairings like Sasuke/Naruto are mostly with Sasuke as seme.. It does make it more interesting when it's reversed. I feel like pairings are less like that with other animes, for me anyway. Okay, well, I'm finished now. Sorry for the long-winded response.. sweatdrop
