I believe you mean the TONE knob.
And judging from what you've said, i'd say you have what is known as a "passive bass" mainly because it only has just one tone knob and that particular knob cuts the treble frequencies. In all general, the tone knobs allow you to adjust the amount of bass and/or treble frequencies being outputed by your bass.
You may not notice much of a difference when tweaking with it (especially since you say yours is broken pirate ) but its pretty much used for fine tuning the type of sound you want from your bass. If you get around to it, get it fixed and experiment and marvel in the difference in the sound your bass makes while you fiddle with the knob. I don't like Squire so I can't guarantee you anything, but the range of feel from the sound should measure to anything from a deep, beefy sound to a more bright tinny sound. Every player has their preferences on how they adjust their knobs and how they like for the axes to sound, so just play around with it and find something you like. Peace! cool

Shogun Drizzt tone knobs are completely useless Now that's just heartless. xd
Perphaps you need to improve your setup more to hear the differences, as I know the tone knobs add alot of detail especially when effects are in play. biggrin

Tone knobs do a lot for me, course, I use a 300 Watt rig at the moment, which is plenty for anyone so I can tell when my tone is a little off from my liking. still want the my Stero 1500 watt system, but I am insane! mrgreen

When it comes to tone knobs, I find most people who don't use them, don't notice a difference. Me, I've been fiddling with them from day one so i notice a huge difference if one is slightly off. I use a single coil/humbucker EMG setup in my bass so there is a lot of room to manuever.
