Quote:
NEW YORK - Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.

After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members.

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."

Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy."

"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."

Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority."

Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.

I knew it. Well, I suspected it. Well...

And yet, it's never actually mentioned. Seems like a bit of a cop-out to me. She announces it in an interview, but refuses to mention it in the books, presumably because of the reaction. She wants to seem like she's open-minded and accepting, but not to the point where it could lose her money.

What do you think?

---|I don't think it's a cop-out. Plenty of authors write in gay subtext but can't be explicit about their gay characters for fear of public outrage. JKR isn't all that different from Tamora Pierce and countless others.

(Besides, I so knew that Dumbledore/Grindelwald was canon anyway. I called that one long ago.)

I'm sorry I'm off topic, but... Jay? Tamora Pierce? Do elaborate for all the other Pierce fans in the guild, please. razz

---|Roger/Thom was canon, as was Lark/Rosethorn and Lalasa/Tian, even though only one of those was ever stated explicitly within the books.

EDIT: And I think Roger/Alex may have been implied canon as well.

---|That's a reaction I've been seeing a lot on LJ: the assumption that Gay!Dumbledore = ******, which it absolutely does not. Besides, it's not like Dumbledore/Harry and the like were non-existent before this came out. Dumbledore being gay is an interesting little character tidbit, nothing more.|---

Personally I don't see the huge problem of her mentioning it in her books. Take as example the book os Anne Rice, they have it and still have a huge sucess.

The second two definitely, but I have to say I do not believe in Roger/Thom or Roger/Alex. The Song of the Lioness series was published in the 80s, when Tamora was in her twenties. She was young, she wasn't as confident, and though I love that series I love how much more comfortable her writing is in her later books. I don't believe she meant for those at all, and any "implications" were probably imagined by homosexual hottie loving fan girls.

Not to insult the homosexual hottie loving fan girls. I used to be an obsessive one myself.

As for Dumbledore being gay, I do not believe it was a cop out. It just wasn't worth mentioning. Besides, some things are better left to the imagination and guess work then "GUESS WHAT?" sort of things.

---|Tamora Pierce actually said that Roger/Thom was canon, but that her publishers wouldn't let her make it explicit, hence the subtextiness of their relationship. I'm fairly sure she said that about Roger/Alex as well, though I'm not certain so don't quote me on that one.

The reason JKR revealed Dumbledore's sexuality in the first place was, I believe, in response to a question she was asked, so it's not like she was making some huge revelation for the sake of publicity; she was asked a question, and she answered, and that's that.

Honestly, coming from someone who obsessed over the Tortall series of Pierce's books, I never assumed that Roger/Thom and Roger/Alex existed. I just... took what was written as it was. I don't think I was really of the age that I begun to assume that such and such a man is homosexual with another man in books I read. I was very young. >< I was too busy squeeing over Alanna and George getting together.

---|Alanna/George? No way! Alanna/Raoul OTP!

(Just kidding, obviously. Kel/Raoul was cooler.)

Roger/Thom was, to me, quite obvious in the subtext. Then again, I haven't read the books in a while so perhaps I'm misremembering...?
