…I have been thinking about repenting. What does that mean, to repent? My dictionary says it is to feel regret, contrition, etc., for what one has done or left undone, to think with regret or contrition of. The Bible, that wad of righteousness, wickedness, and everything in between, mentions the word repent (and its variations repentance, repented, repentest and repenting) on more than one hundred occasions. 'Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent…' says the First Book of Kings, 'Then thou hear their prayer…and forgive thy people that have sinned…' Poor Job must do it hard: he swears he abhors himself and repents in 'dust and ashes'. And the Revelation, which must have petrified the scribe St John out of his skin as it unfurled across his astounded mind, warns us to 'hold fast and repent', for 'As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Why does the Bible squall so? Why does it feel such a need to bully? Who is it, after all, that does not automatically repent what he or she has done or left undone? Repenting is surely the most natural thing in the world. I wish I'd done this, I wish I hadn't done that: we say it or think it a million times before we're through. It matters not a bit that repentance is futile, and alters nothing of what history has recorded and so irretrievably consumed. The Bible focuses on the repenting of sins, yet isn't it true that few of us (religious or not) wish to sin? We don't, most of us, want to hurt. We want to be good. We don't want to be told to repent, we just do it. It's a rare soul who rises brazenly above the inclination.

Sorry about typing like this, it's my ED voice. I figure it makes me sound like the "calm, reasonable type".

Repenting isn't saying "Oh, I wish I hadn't done that." It's openly admitting that you have done something wrong and saying (usually to God) that you are sorry. It's basically asking God to forgive you.

But the dictionary says that repentance is to feel regret or contrition. It's the act of feeling sorry.

The dictionary is right. The first act of rpentence is to feel regret, to see what was wrong in your life. Because you won't want Jesus (Wow, that sounded really churchy) if you don't see what you'vebeen doing wrong.

Goths aren't irreligious.

Quote:
Goths, in terms of their membership in the subculture, are usually not supportive of violence, but rather with tolerance. Many in the media have incorrectly associated the Goth subculture with violence, hatred of minorities, white supremacy, and other acts of hate. However, violence and hate do not form elements of goth ideology; rather, the ideology is formed in part by recognition, identification, and grief over societal and personal evils that the mainstream culture wishes to ignore or forget. These are the prevalent themes in goth music.

And also:

Quote:
The subculture is marked by its emphasis on individualism, tolerance for diversity, a strong emphasis on creativity, tendency toward intellectualism, a dislike of social conservatism, and a mild tendency towards cynicism, but even these ideas are not universal to all goths. Goth ideology is based far more on aesthetics than ethics or politics.

Gal, he was talking about how clean-cut (stereotypical) christian that sounded. And goths, of course, are not clean-cut.

Yes. I was making a joke. I know perfectly well what being gothic is. You wear black and you see beauty in things (i.e. graveyards) that other people think of in disgust.

I think graveyards are beautiful. I'm also highly individualistic and nonconformist, with a love of art and literature (I'm a pianist and a writer to boot) and tend to be somewhat cynical. Oh, and of course, I think gothic fashion is gorgeous. That dark, gorgeous, old-world look! That lace! Those ruffles! heart Maybe I should consider being a goth...

Well, the colour black is believed to symbolically repel negative energy, so maybe I'll try it out.
