Hey guys. I recently joined my school's epee fencing team and I now need to order my own equipment. But looking at all the brands and styles is confusing. Got any suggestions for:

Epees

Body Cords

Plastrons

Helmets

Jackets

Knickers

Help is much appreciated. And yes, I am sure that I really want to do this. So there is no doubt in my mind.

Blue gaunlet or absolute is the way to go.
Amazing quality. Really.

I second this opinion. As a fencer for only three years, I've been really impressed with Blue Gauntlet's quality. I've had the same jacket for 2 1/2 years and it has endured many wash cycles brilliantly. I will warn you about their knickers, however. They are sort of see-through. I found this out the hard way the first day I had gotten them. The quality is great, but if you do order knickers, make sure that you wear a pair of white shorts underneath them!

As far as epées and body cords are concerned, it is really about how much you want to shell out. I have two "real" Uhlmann body cords and have pretty much held up over the years, with minor repairs needed occasionally. If you really want to splurge and get a high quality body cord that will last for years, then Negrini is the way to go. However, these typically run around the 40 dollar range. I swear by my Negrini, and it hasn't failed me yet!

Epée blades depend upon the fencer. I would suggest trying out many different blades in order to see what feels right before buying one for yourself. Many vendors at national tournaments have sample weapons that you can hold to see what feels right as far as weight and balance, or you can sample your clubmates' weapons to get an idea. For example, I prefer a lighter blade with a center of balance near the bell guard. Therefore STM and Prieur blades are a good match for my fencing style. Ultimately it is up to you to determine what fits your style and what your strategy is.

Also, there is no need to rush out and buy an FIE blade right away. They are very expensive and while they make excellent weapons, if one's skills aren't honed, then it is wasted money, for any other cheaper blade will do just as good if you are just beginning.

I hope all of this helps. I would also recommend talking to your coach and your club armorer. Both will probably be glad to assist you, as did mine.
