Hey there. I was wondering what martial arts people practiced, so here's a big lousy poll! And of course we can discuss. If you're going to vote, I suggest using your primary martial art, e.g. I took a couple of years at karate, but I'm really learning Medieval Swordsmanship for over a year and I've learned much more during that.

I watched the video and was a little confused by the number system. How did you get into swordsmanship?

The number system is simple. When you make a good hit, you are awarded points- 1 if you hit a hand or foot (easy target), 2 if you hit arms or legs (medium target) and 3 if you hit torso or head (hard targets). The number on the left of the /, the one with the +, is how many points you got this round (a round ends after a hit, even if simultaneous), the right number is the total points you get, which determines the winner.
I kinda had the bug in me since a kid. I went to karate as a kid, then for another year when I was 16, hoping that I'd learn at least some kenjutsu stuff my brother was taught (I was always a sucker for western swords), but in that summer I found out about the SCA from a canadian friend. I hooked up with the local SCA guys who happened to be ARMA, but not for long. Then I read some books, a couple of years ago I gathered some friends for sparring, and a year ago ARMA regrouped here and got more organized and I joined up. That's it so far. Now I'm practicing for ARMA General Free Scholarship smile

I went as a teenager...after my sister joined but I wanted to do it before. My parents thought it was too expensive but they wanted to try and find something my sister would actually stick with soooo yea.
Yea number systems like belts seem to be different sometimes.

Hm? I think he was referring to the large red numbers in my videos, really. Unless you're paralleling different ranks in different martial arts with different ways of scoring points. Or maybe I'm just crazy and see conspiracies everywhere. Including my toaster. Which does not exist seeing as I don't have one.
*mad giggle*

That's awesome. One of my players from my biweekly gaming group is a memeber of the SCA and has a lot swords and shields laying about his house. I never really got into a discussion with him about it but maybe the next session I will.

I have some odd looking knifes. Hahahaaa
In TKD I learned how to use swords, knifes and a bo staff. I wanted to learn more but the focus wasn't weapons soooo yea. Oh and I learned how to disarm someone with a gun.
I will watch it at some point...

What did they teach you in TKD and what swords? The Do(Korean Katana)?
SCA's good, but usually they're so wrapped up in their own points system, where lower leg targets are not even allowed (not to mention the stupid 'fight on your knees if your legs get hurt' rule)! Plus, these guys don't train in grappling cause they don't allow it (of course it's dangerous to grapple in a spar, but you have to at least train), and frankly they practice with round rattan sticks, not even wooden swords, let alone metal ones. But hey, it's better than nothing!
If you know how to disarm a guy with a gun at 30 meters, then you're my master XD
