I'm looking to buy a saddle in the near future, and I do low-level eventing. So I was wondering, what kind of saddle should I buy? Jumping or all-purpose? Obviously, I can't get a dressage saddle because I can't jump in that. My instructor recommends an all-purpose saddle, but I've read in a horse magazine that for eventing it's best to buy a jumping saddle. This would also be easier because then I could just buy a dressage saddle later without having to worry about buying a jumping saddle once I get to a higher level. Did that make any sense? xd

I'd say go with what your instructor says. The dressage part of eventing is not very...uh...rigorous, so you should be fine in a jumping saddle.

My instructor recommends an all-purpose saddle, though, but I've read that they're not very good for jumping or dressage. confused

Ooops, read that wrong... It really depends on the saddle, but most all-purpose saddles are just fine for both disciplines, as long as you're not doing super high-level stuff. Have your instructor help you pick out a good one.

And by the way, you CAN jump in a dressage saddle, just not anything high than a foot or two. xd

Thanks! Yeah, I've jumped in a dressage saddle, but it wasn't very comfy, and a lot of the people at the barn don't like when it's done, but my instructor really doesn't care all that much.

There's a HUGE variation in the kinds of AP saddles, so why don't you kinda find a compromise? There are some AP saddles that look basically like shallow-seated Dressage saddles (like mine lol ). They've got the straight, semi-longer flaps that are more designed for flatwork.

But there's also the AP saddles with a slightly forward flap. Then there's the ones with quite forward flaps. There's also variations in the depths of the seats.

I think if I were you, I'd get an AP with forward flaps and a deeper seat. That way you're kinda getting the best of both worlds. smile

Okay. Here's an idea. Get a nice, used or brand new, Borelli All Purpose 18inch saddle.

They are WONDERFUL to ride in, and look pretty classy. x3

Borellis actually aren't real super-good, they are made out of Argentinian leather. I have heard their flat saddles are kinda popular in schooling barns, but that's about it.

Also, how do you know she needs an 18?

Well, I use an 18inch, and it fits nicely. x3 (My aunt handed it down to me, and said that it should Fit Penny, cause it fit Candy. And Candy was a hard horse to fit. o.o )
18inch I think depends on YOU, not the tree. 18 inch gives you lots of room for their 2-3point, or sitting for long periods of time.

Argentina is the BEST for leather saddles. <3 Don't doubt them. I love them. <3 Too bad they went out of business and stopped making them. DX

Well, if she is looking for not so pricey, she should get a Borelli, or else, if she is willing to spend thousands, get a Wintec.

England makes the best leather tack, not Argentina. You'll spend loads more on tack from England than Argentina. Like DE said, the were popular in riding schools, but that's because they were cheap, and theres a reason when something is cheap.

Most adults (on english saddles) use a 17 inch. That is the norm. 18 if you're a bit bigger, and most kids/tweens fit a 16 comfortable. If you get a saddle that's too big, it effects your position and you slide around. I rode in a lady's 19 once,THAT was NUTS. It was a all purpos and I may as well have been riding the horse bareback because it didn't help me stay in place like the saddle would have if it were a 17 and fit me.

I'd probably take about a 15 inch now, but I'd want to get a 16 inch so I'd have room to grow (I'm 13). I went to the tack store, and I'm thinking of getting a Collegiate, not sure yet, though.

As Brat said, Argentina isn't even in the top 3 for quality leather saddles. Sure there's always the occasional exception, but if you're looking for the very best leather, you go to England, Germany, France, etc. Definitely not Argentina.

Argentinian leather is SLIGHTLY better than Indian or Pakistani or Mexican leather, but not by much.

And yeah, 18 is usually too big for the run of the mill woman/girl. I use a 17 myself, and Claire Bear would probably need a 16. Good idea to buy a BIT on the big side now for her, if she grows more. 3nodding

Brat, I've ridden in a 19 incher a few times before too, it was a men's polo saddle. I felt like I was in a flat saddle for saddleseat because it was so dang big. xd

Claire; Collegiates are excellent saddles. Some even have the gullet system in them now, the Collegiate Convertibles. Those are neat because they will fit most of the horses you come across.

I don't think its too late to stick in an opinion... I'm also looking for an english saddle so I'll post exactly what I was told by some people...

The most common size for an adult would be a 17" maybe 16 1/2

"There are two big things you want to look for in saddles - type of leather and what its flocked with. English leather is ideal and anything wool flocked is going to be superior to foam.. Don't touch anything that's made ot of indian or argentinian leather! And if they say "european leather" ask them to be specific, they will say argentinian... run!"

That's exactly what I was told over msn by a friend of mine, her mom is a great dressage coach who works at a hunter/jumper and dressage barn just up the road from where I board.

The best way to find a comfy seat size, go sit in saddles at the tack shop! lol and I'd leave a bit of room to grow.

Thanks! I've tried out some saddles at the tack store with help of a worker, and she seems to know what she's doing.

15inch through 18inch are pretty common sizes. My english is an 18inch and my western is a 16inch.

Generally, I don't see what's so wrong about Argentinean leather. It's nice, holds well, and lasts a LONG time. (The saddle I have has been around for YEARS and has yet to rot. )

My advice, Get something that Fits You AND your horse. Though, if your horse has a hard back to fit, well, you'll spend more then what was expected.
