Profession: What you did before the s**t hit the fan. Office dweller, police officer, college student, university professor, unemployed... anything. It affects your skills and possibly your possessions (it's hard to have a bulletproof vest if you're not a cop).
Skills: Things your character is good at. Often they're tied to his profession, but not necessarily- a college student might know some martial arts, or an office worker might be good at swimming... you get the idea.
Weapons: Again, these depend on your profession. Short of military or police, firearms are very limited (including picking them up from someone else- others probably have already). Aside from common weapons like knives and clubs, you may either start with two uncommon weapons (e.g. fire axe, machete, 9mm pistols, wallhanger swords) or a rare weapon (a good-quality sword or other melee weapon, a shotgun, a hunting rifle). Unique (but not absurd) weapons are encouraged! Please don't try overkill, try flavour.
Armor: Pretty much as the above. Totally weird armors like medieval stuff are only if your character's a 35 year old western martial artists or was very rich. Most people do not start with any armor at all. Typical "armor" could be football, rugby and hockey armor, bike helmets and armor, elbow/knee/shinpads, stuff like that.
Possessions:Stuff that has no direct offensive or defensive application but is utilitarian- rope, backpacks, food, clothing etc.
