Yo.
Short version:
How does Gimp vary from Photoshop? Last time I tried it it was more like M$ Paint than PS, and while the screens I'm seeing now look to've improved, it still feels like there's something... missing. Like all them, whatchamacallits, filters? Whatever Clouds and its kin fell under.
Long version:
For awhile my only 2D work has been limited to stuff on paper. I used to use an older version of Photoshop a lot -- before this CS and Elements crap -- but haven't had good access to it in about 4 years, and wasn't using it much for the last couple years that I *did* have access to it.
So, last night in a spate of boredom I downloaded the 30-day trials for Photoshop, Illustrator, and some Adobe Flash thingy I've never used... and I also downloaded a copy of Gimp. Since I prefer not to steal software I've not already paid for, and I honestly don't remember how my family acquired Photoshop in the first place (maybe it was on a used machine we bought, or maybe it was just relatively cheap 10 years ago...), I'd rather use the Gimp than go torrent PS after 30 days.
So, enlighten me... How does one translate control systems between the two? And where might be an equivalent of my beloved (Difference) Clouds tool? >_>a

Eh, i'm not fluent in GIMP. I do remember GIMP having filters though. I think i may have found a solution to your missing filter. I have never tried this, but it looks like its worth a shot: http://members.home.nl/m.weisbeek/gimp/#ps Then click "Extend The GIMP's functionality with scripts and Photoshop-plugins" Hope you find the filter you're after!

Filters are available in gimp They always have been
Heres how it works You have your menu bar, you have your image window and your layers dialog In the image window there is another menu bar, and filters can be found on there as a drop down menu, or right click on the image and select filters that appears there!
If you need any further help or explanation with GIMP drop me a PM, I've been using it for about 2-3 years now
