I haven't been baptized yet, so someone told me I'm going to purgatory if I were to die right now... and I don't know what it is, I've started my conversion process to Catholicism since last year...

  Purgatory is the place between Heaven and Hell. In order to get out of Purgatory, people must pray for you. Whenever I go to mass, I always try to offer up my own sufferings or harships for the people in purgatory, becuase I know they're suffering much more than I am. But, it's better to go to Purgatory rater than Hell (Any place is better than hell, what am I saying? XD), becuase sooner or later you will get out and then go to Heaven. =)

  No, no, no, it's not sin at all! Baptism is a Sacrament that washes away your Original Sin. If you're not Baptised, then that means that you still have that Original Sin from Adam and Eve. But, you still belive in God, right? So, then you would go to Purgatory, and you would have to wait there untill you got enough prayers to enter into heaven; untill you're ready.
You see, before Jesus died for us on the cross, everyone who belived in God would have to go to Purgatory to wait; even Mosses had to wait untill Jesus came. When he died for us, that opened up the gates of Heaven for all to come. But, what I've been told, if you still ahve that Original Sin, you have to wait in Purgatory for who knows how long. I'm still not 100% on it entirly. I can ask about it at my next Confirmation class though. <3
{{I love Zelda! >w< It always make me happy to see someone else who does, too. <3}}

I am going to get flamed but: There is no Purgatory. I was taught all about that stuff, and I do not believe in it. If Jesus died on the corss, why do we need to go to Purgatory,. accepcting him into our hearts and being Baptized takes away sin by cleasing out hearts. So why would Jesus do all that if we have to sit around in Purgatory anyways? Show me somehting in the NEW Testament, AFTER Jesus was risen, that has to do with Purgatory. Plus, most of the Fathers I have met don't believe in it either. It makes no sence. That's just my two cents, don't worry about it. ^^ I am prepared for flaming. Dx

Purgatory is a place that is neither heaven nor hell. Since nothing impure can enter the kingdom of heaven, it is not heaven but is isn't hell because in hell there is no hope of being saved. Purgatory ends when Judgment comes. It is a place of purification where venial sins (small offenses against God that are not too grave that it destroys our friendship with God and warrant damnation e.g. lying) and forgiven mortal sins (offenses against God so grave that it destroys the state of grace) are cleansed from us. In purgatory, we, to some extent, suffer from our guilt and longing to be with God. After being purified, we then enter the kingdom of heaven and experience the unimaginable joy and perfect happiness of being with God. The Church is united in Jesus Christ. Therefore, all her members are connected including those the saints in heaven and the suffering in purgatory. The church triumphant (those in heaven), the church militant (those living on earth) and the church suffering (those in purgatory) are constantly offering prayers for one another. Our prayers for those in purgatory seek to shorten or lessen their suffering. If you are not baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. And if that is true, you can't possibly be in purgatory. I know you may have a lot of questions about baptism but I am sure you would find a lot of resources and people to help you with that. If you want to be baptized, just go to the nearest Catholic parish and they'll be happy to help you out in preparation for baptism. Here's an article from Catholic Answers about purgatory including the verses in the Bible that support it.: http://www.catholic.com/library/purgatory.aspAlso there are lots of other resources on the internet, in Catholic bookstores and libraries. Also people from the local parish would be happy to help you out.

doesn't anyone read their catechism?(well i can tell some of you have) purgatory is real and it is church doctrine, it is a place and state of temporal punishment in the next world, the word purgatory means cleansing, purgatory is a place where the soul is cleansed of unforgiven venial sin and/or the debt of sins already forgiven but not yet atoned for,
we know that there is a purgatory based on the constant teaching and practice of the catholic church, on the bible and tradition(the unwritten word of God) and even common sense, all prove the existence of purgatory,
if you have common sense you can understand this easily, think about it, only people with mortal sin go to hell, and on the other hand, no one can enter heaven with even the smallest sin, therefore, there must be a place in the next world where lesser sins can be taken off the soul,
as for what Lacrimosa said, sorry but there is proof in the new testament that tells of purgatory, i don't have the time to find and type everything out, but i'll type out what i think will be the most clear, Matt. 12:32 – Jesus says, “And anyone who says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but no one who speaks against the Holy Spirit will be forgiven either in this world or in the next.” Jesus thus clearly provides that there is forgiveness after death. The phrase “in the next” generally refers to the afterlife, Forgiveness is not necessary in heaven, and there is no forgiveness in hell. This proves that there is another state after death, and the Church for 2,000 years has called this state purgatory.
i personally have never heard a catholic priest say there is no purgatory, and not to mention anyone who denies even one church doctrine is no longer catholic, as for Jesus dieing on the cross for us, He didn't die on the cross so we wouldn't have to go to purgatory, He died so the gates of heaven would be open to us again, purgatory is not a waiting place, it's a place of temporal punishment, when we are baptized we are cleansed of original sin and in return given sanctifying grace, but that doesn't clean us from all of our sins for the rest of our life, we still sin and we still have to pay for that and be cleansed from it,
not only is there proof of purgatory in the old and new testament, but we have proof with our saints, some of whom have personally met these souls and were asked from them to be prayed for, there have also been people who have had near death experiences, these people spoke of a beautiful place that looked like heaven, but they were told it was not, because if it were heaven, they would not be able to leave back to their body, but they were told of what the place was, which was purgatory, St. Gertrude the great was given a prayer from our Lord, it was a prayer He told her that would release 1,000 souls from purgatory each time it is said,
well i g2g, hope this has helped.

The Hallowed Mouse Ok, so when is the nearest time I can get baptized, what steps do I need to take? [[You have no idea, I've played nearly every game, haven't played Twilight Princess yes, or the Oracle of Time, Oracle of Ages, or Majoras Mask, but I'm still obsessed with them... heart ]] Well, depending on how your Parish works, it shouldn't take you too long. You'll probably have to take some classes, if you already haven't, but I would go to your Church's office and get some information on it. Each one works differently, depending on how many people are taking the Sacrament, and how old they are; most people receive it when they're just a few weeks old (cute babies >w<), but there's nothing wrong taking it when you're older.
But, yeah, the best way to do it would be to go to your churches office, and ask about it. It may be mandatory for you to take classes, or they could just give you a date that you can have it at.
{{You should totaly try to get your hands on the Oracle series. <3 It's so good! TP is pretty good, but it's really eaisy. I haven't played Majora's Mask yet, either. T-T My cousin let me borrow it, but I never had time to play it. 3
Have you played Phantom Hourglass yet?}}

  Donno... That's a good question, though. XD I don't belive so, but, every church works in different ways, so you'll have to ask. Have you taken any sort of classes before? If you have, I'm pretty sure you won't have to.
{{Oh, you'll have tons of fun with it! =3 The storyline's funny, too.

From what I've heard from accouts of saints and from those who receive apparitions, Purgatory is very real. It is commonly refered to as the second level of hell. The only part of hell that is temporary. They way I've learned, is when you sin, you receive a stain on your soul. After confession, the innitial mess is gone, but the stain is still there. In purgatory, the unconfessed "messes," and your residual stains are burned off, to purify you for the sancity of heaven. Nothing impure can enter the gates of heaven, you see.

Honestly, Purgatory is probably one of the reasons why I originally returned to Catholicism after several years of spiritual searching. It just makes sense to me. Most people aren't entirely good or evil in nature or in actions. We all have the potential for both, and most people's lives reflect at least a little of each. The problem I had with the idea of Heaven and Hell for a while was that it was too black and white - it separated people into either good or bad, when most people are somewhere in between. Purgatory adds that grey area that I feel is needed to exist in reality. You're not so good and pure that you get to be with God in paradise right off the bat, but you're also not so evil that you deserve punishment for eternity. You get a chance to atone for your unresolved bad actions, suffer some punishment, and then go to God all clean and shiney.
