who protected tohru when she was young

It's Yuki, not Kyo. Kyo was the one who new Tohru's mother. Although the cap that Tohru has was originally Kyo's. The wind blew it off when he was a kid and Yuki tried to give it to him, but Kyo ran off because the rat touched it.
