On another guild here on Gaia, I ran into a thread about questions that people commonly asked this Op. One of them was "Can you make me one?" This question perplexes me because it seems to imply that the person who asked the OP this doesn't think they are human.

Yes, they could be asking to convert, but why convert to a religion you probably know next to nothing about? And why not ask it in a more appropriate way?

Yes the OP could be claiming to be a werewolf, vampire, otherkin or other being that identifies "non human", but if this was the case, I would have expected some sort of note made. I mean otherwise the question is really odd and offensive.

So yes time for questions/ disscusion topics:
question Are you often dehumanized because of your beliefs?
question Do you think that people really ask others this question often?
question How would you deal with someone who seriously asked you this question?
question How do you deal with people who are so ignorant or otherwise offensive?
question Has the media or new waves of books coming out under "pagan" titles helped to reinforce this kind of sentitment?
question Without knowing the OP or anyone who asked them this question do you generally tend to think that the question tells us more about the OP or the person asking?

So if I ask "How do I become one?" in reference to say a police officer, does that mean I don't consider them human?

You're jumping to conclusions and ignoring logic in favor of your own prejudices and assumptions.

I assumed that the thread creator was alluding to them perhaps identifying with being a vampire, but thinking about, the question could apply in the context of "Can you make me a [pagan, witch, etc]," like in an initiation.

Am I dehumanized for my beliefs? No, because not many people aside from myself know what my beliefs are. When questioned I often play them off as Eastern teachings, which most of them are.

Do people as the question often? I don't think they do in that context.

How would I deal if someone asked me that question? Depends on what exactly they were asking. What do they want me to make them?

I generally just ignore ignorant and offensive people. If they won't allow me to ignore them, then I make them wish they had ignored me.

I think that the media perhaps portrays paganism as something you have to be initiated into, but not necessarily portrays pagans as something other than human.

I think that anything a person types tends to tell a lot about them, specifically.

I don't think it matters what they meant because there is not enough information in the identified sentence to support their claim.

I guess you're right. With the context given, I figured the person who was getting asked these questions was being asked them specifically because they were some form of general pagan, but that may not be the case.

Probably my fault for jumping to conclusions.

I was wondering if that was the OP's identification as the phrasing of that question is more consistent with having those kind of beliefs. Even then I think the question is kind of ignorant, but more expected.

Questions like that make me wonder what people qualify as a pagan or a witch or whatever and what people think is entailed in "becoming one".

I've never been asked in that context either, and I'm glad cause I think its a little rude. It's one thing to want to know about my beliefs, but wanting to "become one" without knowing anything about it irks me.

This is another good point. Certainly if someone wanted to learn more about reiki and then wanted to learn to be reiki three, I'd probably teach them.

I think the media often portrays paganism as hippies and people who live very alternatively. Sometimes that can lead to a sense of "otherness", but then again sometimes the pagans scene leads people to that all on there own.

That's probably the only person you could get a beat off in those circumstances.
