In the small, isolated village of Clein, the people are in a society with virtually no modern technology. So no surprise they might have some strange customs. The three classes make up the town, the Marcies(lowest), the Carks(middle), and the Piks(highest class). Of course the Marcies and Piks never associate, other than the Marcies occasionally working in a Pik household.
Every three years, the mothers of their children meet, on a very important mission....they must marry off their offspring! This has gone on for centuries, leaving many women to marry the man of their parent's choosing. No one has bothered to challenge the rule, and those who have mentioned uprising mysteriously are found dead in the river. The highest Pik family rules the village, able to carry out the laws and enforce them however they please. Girls and boys are married off at 17-19 years old, though there have been rare cases of women who married at 21, or never married at all.
Now, you are the generation, and your family has decided to marry you off! Will you accept this harsh reality, or will you follow your heart to whom you long for? The decision is yours......

All style clothing is a century or so after the medieval ages (Yes, proper girls wear bodices and corsets)
A small forest surrounds Clein, with small streams running through town, and a river through the forest.
Currently the season is towards the end of summer.

The Ritual
o1.) The mothers gather, deciding the arrangements
o2.) The children are given the names of the people they are expected to marry.
o3.) The parents arrange a date to formally present their children to each other. The finest garments should be worn.
o4.) "Dates" are set up by the parents, although the children are expected to arrange them most of the time.
o5.) After an arranged date passes, the two children are supposed to move in together. Usually the girl moves to the boy's home, unless there are rare cases where the male moves in with the female's family.

Adrian sat in front of the vanity mirror, as the morning sun peaked through the windows. Her bedroom was of plush periwinkle, the canopies draped over the wooden bed frame. Today, she decided, she would visit the market. Her maid entered the room, bringing the proper clothes she was expected to wear. Following the maid, came her mother, dressed in a dark red gown. "I have wonderful news!", cried her mother as she entered the room. "You're engaged to be married!" Suddenly Adrian looked up, obviously surprised. "Riven Cole. A blacksmith at his father's business. We had to marry lower, a Cark, but this is a good deal overall." Her mother said excitedly. And as abrubtly as she had came, her mother exited the room.
Adrian sat in shock, as her maid brushed her long hair. "I'm sure he'll be lovely, miss." The maid said timidly, putting down the silver brush. As the maid quietly left the room, Adrian sank to her bed.
"I...I...maybe he'll be nice...yes, I must be positive." Adrian said, trying to keep calm. "I can continue as normal today, I'll be fine." A bit weak on her feet, she walked into her closet. She looked through the lace and velvet, to the very back of the closet. Behind her oldest dress, there was a peice of clothing that seemed to stick out. The plain, common dress sat in the closet, and Adrian withdrew it, stashing it under her bed. Several other maids entered, to tie up Adrian's corset. She held to the foot of the bed, as the lace strings sucked in her waist. They once again exited, and Adrian slipped into the common dress. Adrian tied her hair back in a long pony tail, looking at herself in the mirror.

Edward walked down the street, a cool breeze on the back of his neck. He had gotten up early to train with his fencing master. He looked around and saw children running outside to play in the sunlit streets. He heard a small boy cry out for his mother. He came to his house and entered.
His mother and father were seated at the table. They looked stern and asked, "Where have you been Edward?" Edward stood in front of them and replied in a polie tone, "Training with my fencing master." His parents looked relieved and said, "Good. And we have something to tell you." They paused, "You are engaged to Skylar Marie Walker. She is a cark, but is well suited." I was shocked. Coming from a family very high in class, marrying downwards was frowned upon.
Edward shook his head slightly, as if in pity, and walked upstairs. He went into his bedroom and sat in the armchair. He considered the options that were given to him. He could not refuse to marry her, but he could choose not to like her. Or, he could try to like her and have an at least slightly happy life. He thought for a few minutes, then decided he would meet her and see what happened.

Chase pulled the horses to a stop and hopped off the front of the carriage. He held open the door for the exiting Piks, a man and a woman. He held his arm out and helped the woman to the ground. She smiled in thanks, and Chase tipped his hat towards her with a polite smile. He waited untill they had entered their house, then got back on the carriage. He drove down the main Pik street to see if anyone needed to be picked up. No one was out, so he turned onto the Cark street and drove toward the barn to see Maria. They were good friends, for their family businesses coincided. He had to get his horses from her barn.
He drove by slowly, but no one was there. As he turned around to go back to the Pik area, he saw his father at their house beckoning him to come over. He parked the carriage and got out. He walked over to his father, who look overjoyed. His father said, "Your engaged to Maria." Chase grinned and nodded, speechless. His father told him to go back to work. He walked back to the carriage smiling. He always wondered who he was going to be engaged to, and Maria was not a bad choice.

"Katherine McClellan," Yasu spoke into his reflection coming from the river, "I wonder if I have ever stolen from her family before...” The cool breeze slid along his back and soothed him slightly. The image of his father appeared behind his in the river. He wondered in his mind, "What would he have thought of me being engaged to someone that I may have pillaged off of?" The image faded quickly as Yasu placed his rough hands into the water. The ripples spread on the surface and scared several fishes off. He watched them speed away, feeling slightly alone without their company. Yet, that very same loneliness he was glad to have. He new that after this engagement he would never be alone again. It angered him to have to be chained to another like a dog to his post. Yasu was a free soul, a poor one but free nonetheless. He ached for some solution that would sever the strings that would try to bind him to a total stranger.

Adrian stared at herself in the mirror. Sure, she couldn't change her upbringing, but she could change her appearance. Luckily, her room was on the first floor, so after packing a small bag, Adrian slipped out the window, making sure to be quiet. "A nice trip to the market should ease my mind." Adrian says to herself, carefully lifting herself over the stone fence that surrounded the estate. She walked down the cobblestone Pik road, untill she reached the dirt floor of the marketplace. She situated herself across the street of the blacksmith's shop, behind several baskets. "Maybe I can catch a glimpse of him, before the official date." Adrian whispered with a sigh.

After washing his clothes in the river, Yasu rested himself upon the green grass along the riverside. He stared at the clouds that passed him by from under the shade of an old tree. Its small leaves would come floating down and then drift off in the breeze, giving Yasu a mellow feeling. He wished his life was like a leaf, able to drift up and down small currents and dance around in the wind. Instead he has to constantly be aware of himself and his mother, knowing that at anytime they could be in danger. A vagabond life had its appeals, but there was always conflict lurking about the streets, waiting to beckon one to its charm. He worried for her safety and health at times, but most of all Yasu stressed over her constant bawling at night. It wasn't his father's time to pass on but there was nothing that could be done about it now. Yasu scoffed, "Stupid leaves. I'm going to the town. Maybe a walk will rid me of your tormenting breeze." Yasu stood and made his way toward the streets, his wet shorts slipping on his waist and his shirt on his shoulder.

Annalise sat stubbornly on a red velvet chair as her personal maid brushed through her dark brown hair.
"Must you do this, Rachel? I see no need for it," she whined, figeting in the chair. Rachel stopped brushing.
"M'lady, you must, for your mother has great news for you," the maid said. As if on cue, Annalise's mother walked gracefully through her bedroom door. Her mother rested her hand delicately on Annalise's head, careful not to mess up her daughter's hair.
"Dearest Annalise, what wonderful news I carry," her mother said, "You are engaged to be married!" Annalise stood abruptly, her hair bouncing as it rippled down her back.
"I'm what?!?!" she yelled. Her mother just simply laughed and told her the boy's name. Then, as gracefully as she haad entered, she left.
"Rachel, I'm going out for a walk. There will be no need to join me," Annalise said, swiftly ushering her maid out the door. Closing the heavy oaken door behind her, Annalise made straight for her closet. She rustled through the many dresses and found what she was looking for. A plain green dress. She used it to sneak out to the Cark community with her best friend, Adrian.
Pulling the dress on over her head, Annalise contemplated whether or not to do anything with her hair. Deciding not to, she pulled a simple brown belt from under her bed and fastened it around her waist, along with a rope belt with a small leather coin pouch attached.
Annalise opened her window and jumped out onto her horse, Nugget, who had always stood under her window. She nudged Nugget into a walk, then set of towards the Cark community at a canter. The tree branches whipped around her face as they rushed through, but she didn't bother to stop.
As she arrived at the shops owned and managed by the Carks, she noticed Adrian sneaking along by the blacksmith's shop. She quickly dismounted and, holding the reins, walked over to her friend.
"Hey, Adrian," she said, waving with her free hand, "Can you believe what I just heard? I'm getting married! To a boy I don't even know! How absolutely wrong is that?"

Tessa pushed her aunt's broom out the door, along with the last of the dust. She put the broom back up against the wall by the door and turned to find her aunt.
"I'm going to go outside for a while," she said, already out the door, "I'll be back in time for supper, though." And she was off.
Tessa ran through the woods, stopping as she came upon the cobblestone street that marked the Commonplace. She rushed out, and bumped into a wet boy, knocking him over.
"Sorry," she said, helping the boy up, "I didn't see you."

Adrian looked up suddenly, to see her friend Annalise. "Scared my soul for a minute there!" She said with a smile, brushing herself off as she stood up to see Annalise. Listening to her friend's announcement, she nodded in agreement. "Tis true, my own mother has married me off to the blacksmith's son. This is why I sit at this spot, to catch a glimpse of Riven Cole." Adrian replied nervously. "To whom are you engaged?" She inquired.

"Alexander Tamaris. He's a Pik, but I don't even know him....." Annalise said, stroking Nugget's nose. Her head suddenly snapped to the blacksmith's shop as a boy walked out.
"Is that him?" she said, looking at the boy as he walked down the street, away from them.
