Hestia is one of the virgin goddesses, having sworn an oath to remain so rather than choose between Poseidon and Apollo. She was given the first offering at every household sacrifice. By some reckonings, Hestia was not actually an Olympian, since she yielded her seat to Aphrodite. Nevertheless, she was highly revered. Every settlement contained an everburning flame in honor of her.

Hestia’s symbols include this living flame and the hearth itself.
