So i have to do this synthesis paper for my English 1010 class and we have to pick our own topic, mine is the ethics behind stem cell research.

What if we could cure a disease, but it would be unethical or rather a sin against god?

Personally I think that if it can be cured then it should. Why should we stop say a 3 or 4 year old from living out their life because they have a incurable disease and in order to cure it would require a researcher to perform a task that may be a sin against god?

What are your thoughts on stem cell research?

I believe that stem cell research is extremly unethical. I have no particular belief in god that influences me in this thought but to be the fact that they take the cells from a baby thats barely a week into development is just scary.

However i do understand the need for the research and I personally think we need to move forward with it to help save lives. A program or something of that sort would be ideal, like some place where mothers who do not want a child can donate her egg or maybe even the use of eggs from artifical insemination clincs, you know the ones that will not be of any use anyway seeing as the extra will get tossed in a trash can.

Programs like that where we basically "recycle" the gamite(lil eggy thing) athat would be of no use otherwise seems the best to me.

I'm all for stem cell research, as it has the potential to help incredible numbers of people that have a disease that is considered as "incurable." If people would stop saying that it is taking a life, then the research would progress. Even if they don't quit complaining about it being a sin or what not, then when a woman has an abortion, the egg is just going to die, so why not use that one? Also, there is a particular variant strain of embryos that has been found that regenerates its stem cells, allowing for a almost continuous harvesting of them. only downside to it is that there are only a few of these embryos available.

One can't just decide for another person what they can and cant do, if they want to go against god to be cured, then let them, it's not our choice. We don't know what they've been going through, we can't begin to imagine how hard their life must be, or what could be going on in their mind.

I have DiGorge Syndrome, right now it's incurable, but not very life threatening. There are many things that I have to go through, i think I have about 7 or more doctors. Usually babies that have this don't live past their first 10 months, so we're lucky that I'm here, but i'm questioning why, because honestly I don't know.

Unlike most of America I am for Stem Cell Research. Yes at some points it seems unethical, but when the proper restrictions are actually put into order it's perfectly fine. Killing animals is unethical, yet most people who skin animals and wear fur in the name of fashion is looked up to. What's hte difference? If people would just set up restrictions; like not purposly forcing people to become pregnant or paying them to become pregnant for the cells, and just use already dead or miscarried babies, nobody would whine.
But hey that's just my opinon. :]
Have fun with that paper.
