I'm sure everybody is wondering why this film ends like some films end like this and not like that, and what other theories people have about certain interesting/confusing plots.
Well, I think it's necessary to create a new topic for this without spoling the end for those who wish to watch it for themselves.

I'd like to start with AVALON.

SPOILER AHEAD, SO YOU KNOW THE DEAL...

So, I read this interesting theory about the film.
Ash would actually be an Unreturned, living in an Asylum. The Avalon society created these Asylums for Unreturned (just like they appear in the film), connecting them to a VR to avoid the poor souls being aware of their vegetative state.
So Ash would be living a loop. The film would be one of these loops.

There are several clues about this during the film:
- The surreal reality Ash lives in, practically B&W, where people do not really communicate nor even eat (how many times did you see her eating during the film?).
- Bishop would be Ash's therapist, appearing when she starts realizing something is wrong (the dog disappears, dejavu-like moments, etc).
Bishop knows things that only an external god-like entinty would know. This would be possible if you know she's living in a VR and are able to see all that happens on it.
- During one of Ash's flashbacks, we see that it was not a "reset" what made "Wizard" disappear, but something else. Murphy actually sees Ash disappearing in some kinda green mist... when she became an Unreturned.

Anyway, this theory is the most pausible for me at the moment.

indeed.. above all all the alien thingies die all of a sudden and no one knows why.. and then in the end you get told the great story of some bacteria in the water..
but well.. maybe they were not able to notice that with their technology from thousands of years ago..
i mean.. if they would have set an ending that the thingies die because nowadays' air is too polluted or the water too dirty.. that would at least have been amusing... pirate

yeah indeed.. i mean.. what is the guy's profession actually? i dont think it has anything to do with 'saving earth from aliens...'
or dealing with extreme psychological pressure.. i mean.. the guy is already rather bad at caring for his kids and keeping his fridge filled.. so why the hell should he actually all of a sudden discover his hidden qualities in saving himself... where the first human drive in such a situation would be escaping..? plus (and that is something i liked a lot better about cloverfield for example) no one of the little family dies or gets hurt.. thats a bit much luck.. at least for a random group of people being picked..
