Squire's Council

Best described as "taking care of business" this is an elite group that belongs in the deep background of the DH world. No one is sure who the members are or when, where or how The Council started. However, all the Squires fall beneath its shadowy control.

The Dark-Hunters themselves are beyond their reach (or so it's believed).

Who are they? We'd all like to know. The only advice I can give you as one Squire to another--when their email shows up in your inbox or you hear that distorted voice on the phone, pay as close attention to it as you would Artemis.

Never cross the Council.

But what is a Squire?

Squires are either the children of other Squires or they are recruited by Squires and Dark-Hunters.

Squires have an elaborate set-up that can quickly get anything a Dark-Hunter or other Squire needs. They have lawyers, doctors, bankers, pilots, etc., as well as establishments such as hospitals, restaurants, libraries that appear to serve humans as a front, but in reality were established solely to serve the Dark-Hunters and their helpers.

The Squire Council is a select group of Squires who oversee the activities of the other Squires. They make payroll and give out money to any Squire who wishes to set up a business front for the Dark-Hunters.

Main branches/designation of Squires:

Blood-Rites: Squires who are called out to perform blood hunts to terminate any Squire who breaches his/her oath and endangers the Dark-Hunters or their world. They are also called in to execute a "rogue" Dark-Hunter who has turned against humans. Blood-Rites Squires are marked by a spider web-like tattoo on the hand.

Blue-Bloods: Squires who are descended from other Squires.

Dorean/Free Agents: Squires who don't serve a specific DH, but who provide a service that helps all of them. Doctors, pilots, police officers, judges, etc. fall into this category.

Echo/Barnacles: They are assigned to a specific DH and they maintain the DH's home. They often fetch for them as well. They are aids and personal assistants. They live with the Dark-Hunter and help to create an illusion that there's nothing unusual going on with the occupants of a house.

Initiates/Chips: Squires who are recruited.

Oracles: Squires who confer with the gods, especially the Fates to gather information that is helpful to the Dark-Hunters. The most prominent Oracles are the Lekti who keep the Book of Prophecy where all important events in human history are predicted. It is said even the End of the World is chronicled within its pages. They fall outside the control of the Squire Council and are led by the Delphinian (Oracle of Delphi).

Tech: Squires who are involved in research and technological fields. They are the ones who conceive and create special toys and who enable Dark-Hunters to communicate with each other.

Theto/Theti: They function like a police force within the realm of the Squires. They are also the ones sent out to deal with any civilian who finds out about the Dark-Hunters. Unlike the Blood-Rite Squires, they cannot kill anyone. They are sent in first to clean up the situation. If they are ineffective, then the Blood-Rites are called in.

I am an eighth generation Squire and my older brother Jamie is the Squire for Blade FitzWalter and my father Squires for Treig Olavsson. My brother is the Squire who runs the Dark-Hunter web site and my mother runs a safe house and deli for Dark-Hunters in Seattle.

I've been Xander's Squire for 4 years now and have loved most of it. I can't stand those midnight calls where he's been wounded and I have to mobilize to get him to safety. Those nights make my heart weep.

But all in all, I love my Squire duties. I like to think of myself as Xander's Angel of Mercy there to help him the handful of times he really needs it. All the Dark-Hunters are family to me.

My best bud out of the Squires would have to be Nick Gautier. He's a lot of fun and most of the time I get his dry wit.

I love to paint and to sing. My brother even taught me to play guitar, but I'm not as good as he is. I read tons and play on the computer.

I'm also a hand-maiden to the Goddess and on occasion will work as an Oracle.

My greatest gift, in my opinion, is my sense of humor and ability to remain calm in a crisis. I love my sisters at Sanctuary and am very glad to have found them.

Nick Gautier

I'm what most people call poor white trash. My father was a career felon, my mother a stripper. I grew up in the back rooms of the strip club where she worked, helping the bouncers hustle clients.

I dropped out of school at fifteen and swore I'd take care of my mom from that day forward. Unfortunately, I wasn't much better at putting food on the table than she was. And we won't talk about how thick my juvenile record is. Thank God, they seal those things.

Anyway, I took the wrong turn down an alley one night and came face to face with Kyrian who changed my life. He took me off the streets, gave me a legal job and got me back into school.

Though I find him offensively annoying 95% of the time, I owe him everything and I would die or kill to protect him and the rest of the Dark-Hunters.

I'm their, shall we say, procurement expert. I find the things they need and can get an army mobilized within an hour. I also do a lot of their computer work and maintain the site.

I was born a poor...oh wait, that wasn't me. I once saw that in a movie. I was born into the lap of luxury and have to admit I'm probably one of the most spoiled human beings you'd ever want to meet.

My family has served Wulf Tryggvason since he crossed over back in the Dark Ages. We don't count generations--it's been too many of them for us.

I, myself, haven't been a Squire long. Not quite 2 years. I had to take over serving Wulf after my father died of a heart-attack.

Like Brynna, I grew up in the Dark-Hunter world and consider them family. I would never do anything to hurt any of them, not even Wulf when he annoys me. And the man seriously annoys me a large part of the time. He acts like a weird cross between an overprotective father and raucous big brother.

During the day, I'm a full time college student and I tend to be quiet and shy. Much to Wulf's extreme dismay, I seldom date. I just don't have Nick's charisma and it's hard for me to make chit-chat with women. Nick says I need more confidence, I say I need a bag for my head.

As an only child and given what my dad did for a living, I didn't interact much with "normal" human children so I pretty much keep to myself. Like a typical introvert, I read a lot, play on my computer, and watch ungodly amounts of TV.

Jamie Blackstone

Like Nick, I'm a first generation Squire and I don't come from much. My mother died when I was a kid and my father was a mean alcoholic.

At fourteen, I ran away from home and went to Houston hoping to find something better. What I found was a whole lot of trouble.

I ran across Kell in the alley outside of a club where his band was playing. All I have to say about that, never try to mug a Dark-Hunter. It ain't pretty.

Instead of calling the cops, he fed me and sent me to live with the family of his Squire. That was the first time in my life, I realized people actually liked having kids around. You could sit at a table and not have to worry about someone knocking the crap out of you just for being there.

When Rick retired, Kell told me what he was and offered me the job as Squire. I quickly jumped at the chance and have been with him for the last three years.

Tad Addams

I'm an eighth generation Squire and am one of Brynna's older brothers. When I turned 21, I didn't want to serve any particular DH, but thought I could better serve them all with my technical skills.

With a little help from the Squire's Council, I set up an ISP for the Dark-Hunters which I run. To non-initiates, everything looks legit and we do web design for humans, but our primary goal is to serve the Hunters and to make sure they have online access to any info they need.

I'm still not sure how I got into this. I went to Iowa State with Tad who told me after graduation that he had a job for me. Who knew? But the pay was more than I could say no to.

So here I am. Most of the time life is good, but having to keep everything a secret is a bit stressful, especially from my family,. But then I'm such a computer nerd, they expect me to be strange anyway.

I really look like a salesman, don't I? Yeah well, I'm not. I'm a Blood Rites, Dorean Squire which means I can kick your butt and no one cares. My job is to make sure the company looks legit and that I can bail out my coworkers when they get into, shall we say, complications. I work mostly with Otto and Nick. We are the heavies.

I'm a third generation Squire by my mother and fifth on my father's side. I inherited my Blood Rite status from my mother who is an old time Creole. I love what I do and am grateful that I was born into this world.

Alec St. Germaine

I'm a first generation Squire who got into this because I illegally hacked into the wrong system. I was busted by the Squire's Council and thought I was dead. They put the fear of death into me and I ended up getting recruited to work with Tad and Carl which is much better than being dead or incarcerated.

But having been caught once, I have no desire to repeat the experience. I have learned my lesson and want to keep my nose clean. Besides, these guys mean business and they are a scary bunch of folks, especially the Deadly Three (Nick, Otto and Kyl). Even the scary people are scared of them.

My family goes so far back, we've lost count of our generations. I was born into this world and my grandfather was the Council Chair before Brendan. I take my duties most seriously and have no sense of humor when it comes to anything that threatens a Dark-Hunter or Squire.

I was sent to New Orleans to keep watch over the safety of our internet services. Anyone who busts through our security gets a call from me, and I don't mean on the phone.

I'm not much of a people person, but that's okay. The fewer friends you have, the less likely you are to be betrayed.

I was orphaned after my parents who were Squires were killed by a group of Daimons. I was raised by the Council and love being around all the guys. I love living in New Orleans and to be honest, I hate computers, but Tad and the others make it a lot fun and I'm learning lots of interesting things. Such as if you shoot a computer, you can't repair it. Otto is now banned from packing a weapon on our company premises.

I'm working on becoming an Oracle, but haven't been chosen yet. Here's hoping.

The Simi

Favorite Song to Dream by: Oops, I did it again: Brittany Spears (I particularly like this one because it makes the vein on akri's temple throb. When he's not around, I play really kewl stuff, but we don't tell him that. It's much more fun to irritate him.

Favorite Dark-Hunter: Acheron, but most of them are real tasty even though akri says I can't barbecue them up anymore because it upsets Artemis. I say who cares, but akri made me promise so there you go, no DH barbecue for the Simi.

Squire Status: Well, I'm not really a Squire because that involves swearing my fealty (what's fealty akri?) to Artemis. Gimme a break. Never. No, I swear my oath to the Boss, not the B**** I'm not supposed to say that word because akri said that I am a lady and ladies are not supposed to talk like that, but all of you know what I mean.

Hello, I'm the Simi and it is more than a name it is an attitude. I would tell you what Simi means, but then I'd have to kill you and though you are probably quite tasty, Akri gets all cranky when I snack on humans. Akri knows, but he's not telling neither.

I have been with akri for a long, long time. How long? I don't know. It's something like dog years. What is a dog year? I had a dog once, but I ate him so he didn't last a whole year. He snarled at me and I thought, hmmm, snarling dog...barbecue which leads me to my favorite food. Barbecued anything. I used to have a favorite kind of barbecue but akri says I can't talk about that anymore and that it's off the menu. He get real upset when the Simi talk about it so I don't talk about it no more.

Where was I? Oh, I remember now. I protect akri, but he often says someone needs to protect him from me. I don't know what he means by that. The Simi is a good protector. I eat anyone who annoys him. Anyone who don't like akri...one word for them...barbecue. Sometimes toast would work, but I find toast too crispy so I prefer barbecue.

As for my favorite Squire, that Nicky is real nice. I don't want to barbecue him. But he do look mighty tasty. Akri says I can't say in public what I really want to do to him so I won't. But he's real nice to the Simi when she calls so I like him and I won't make him barbecue.

My favorite time is now because now no one tries to tie me to a stake and make barbecued Simi. I did not like them people from long ago cause they would look at me and scream, then try to exorcise me. Exercising is good if you are Richard Simmons, but it is not good if you are the Simi. They did not like the Simi, so the Simi did not like them.

On that note, akri says the Simi has to sign off now or he will take away my plastic. I like my plastic--it make people do all kinds of nice things for the Simi. It gets me stuff. Akri also say if I don't get offline he'll turn off my QVC which would not make me happy and then I would have to barbecue akri. Since I am very attached to akri, I cannot kill him so I have to go now. Bye-bye.
