Everyone has their beliefs on Higher Beings, Gods or Deities. For some they exist, for some they don't.

What is your opinion?

You know, I think about this issue a lot, and even more just lately. But I'm just not sure!

Because I was raised in a traditional Christian family, I was raised with the assumption of God - one higher power. During my years of rebelling against that upbrining, I tried to believe in many different things: no god at all, a goddess, a multitude of gods and goddesses... but nothing really spoke to my inner self.

Lately, through my reading of so many authors, such as Doreen Virtue and Gary Zukav, along with my own inner dialogue, I've "tried on" the belief of all our higher selves together being the true god-head, that there is no supreme being separate from our selves... and that doesn't feel right either. But I can't decide if it's my traditional upbringing that is fighting that concept, or I just haven't hit upon my ultimate truth in this matter. That's one of the reasons I read so much, and visit this guild so often (even if I only read and don't post), to see what others think and feel, and see if any of those beliefs resonate within myself.

I've tried a few things, including merging shamanism, christianity, islam, paganism and buddhism into one religion. I had some guy, a Jehovah's Witness, tell me that I was wrong once, and then I decided to believe in whoever I bloody well pleased. But I would like to settle on one if at all possible, it's a bit like being a religion whore, so yeah, it gets a bit exhausting.

I was raised as a traditional christian. Went to church, prayed to the almighty and the holy trinity. But then between Spiritualizm and a 7 day adventist friend, I really began to question a lot of what I had been taught. I still believe in a higher deity, but we are ultimately connected to him/her through our higher selves. The bible is mearly a guide that is to inspire us to do our best to go for those things which seem greater than ourselves (but really isn't if we have the mind to move forward).

But my experiences with other religions is pretty limited, but if given the chance I'd like to learn more.

I question a lot of the Christian theology. I have a lot of hang ups when it comes to the theocracy of that religion, which is why I began religion shopping in the 1st place. It just seems so contridictory that I'd just as soon go back to Shamanism where I was happy before being forced into participation in religious activities. Not to mention all of the hypocrisy...

My little sister started asking questions and I was like, 'y'know, that really doesn't make sense now does it?'

And as far as Christianity goes, I'm on a sabbatical hiatus since God let my sister die when I asked him not to. I mean really what good is religion if they tell you to ask and then when you do they say no?

I believe that if there is a god or gods that they are not of our world as we know it now, if they are even from our world to begin with (which I personally have my doubts).

I'm coming very late to this but I have a tendency to revive old topics.....

I am almost convinced that many of the old pagan Gods and Goddesses were once people, made larger than life by the retelling of their stories until deification just naturally happened. I am not certain that that is the sum total of Deity, however. Somehow I believe that there are also spirits who are much more primal, more removed from human experience. We are not the be-all and end-all of existence.

I've thought about perspective. I wasn't raised with a book that told me what to believe. And Pagan stories aren't the same as Bible stories - there's a lesson or a point but the sense of Authority is different. It feels like I can think things over for myself though there's advice if I wish. I don't understand the limitations of religion nor do I understand the need for an absolute belief in one deity concept over another. I am comfortable saying "I don't know" but, as noted above, I have some interesting suppositions at the moment.

Like any story, religious docterine can be altered, exaggerated and mistranslated depending on the teller, the listener and how the story is retold.

Disney movies are a good example. Bet most kids know more about the Disney version of well known fairy tales than they do the original.
I've seen differences in current bible printings when compared to my 21 year old edition.

Another idea I have about the pagan stories, one that drives Reconstructionists crazy, is that these stories had hundreds if not a thousand years of oral tradition before anyone wrote them down. A lot can change in that many years of retelling, much can be lost, perhaps particularly creative people can embellish....
Over in my pagan guild we were discussing fairy stories and even the Grimm versions are sanitized for our protection, lol.
My Christian Bible is a new translation and it just doesn't sing....it's like the translation was done by a committee and none of its members were poets.
