.GAME DESCRIPTION.
Before Crisis's story begins shortly after the ending of the war between the Shinra Electric Power Company and the Wutai tribe, a conflict mentioned in passing during Final Fantasy VII. With Wutai defeated and the people of the world now dependent on their Mako Energy and materia, Shinra finds itself the dominant economic, military and political power in the world. But there are those who remain dedicated to the destruction of Shinra, chief among them being the newly emerged insurgent movement known as "AVALANCHE". Before Crisis focuses on this conflict between Shinra and the original AVALANCHE group, which began six years before the events portrayed in Final Fantasy VII, and lasted up to the time immediately preceding the events that took place in that game. In contrast to Final Fantasy VII, which was focused mainly on the viewpoint of the second incarnation of AVALANCHE, Before Crisis centers around the Shinra Company's Turks, with AVALANCHE serving as the game's main enemies.

The game unfolds through a series of periodic "episodes." Because of the subscription-based nature of the game, the game's story unfolded over a period of time. The last episode of the Japanese version of Before Crisis was released on April 1, 2006 — the series officially ending at a total of 24 episodes, one of which is divided into two full-length parts. Special episodes are also released periodically, and further expand the backstory of certain characters, some of which aren't normally playable. The first, "Special Episode of Tseng", and the second "Special Episode of Legend", further expanded on those character's backstories and their role within the Turks. The most recent, "Special Episode of Reno", was released to coincide with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and portrayed a key event in the game from the perspective of the Turks while delving into Reno's character.

.EPISODE LINKS.
Up till the present day, there has been no way for people outside of Japan to play Before Crisis. As can be viewed above, the only way for people to find out what occurred in the game was through hunting down scripts that translated what happened during each episodic release of the game.

However, recently I came across a user on YouTube who had begun uploading the actual in-game play of each episode, with English translations! Thanks to this user, kain424, I am now able to present you with these links, directing you to each episode of Before Crisis.

I only ask two things of those of you who choose to view these videos. Because no one else anywhere online that I could find has before hosted the actual episodes with their translations, take the time out after each episode to rate each part and comment on kain424's episodes, giving him your thanks. He has taken time out of his busy schedule to take up a task so tedious, and he seems to be the very first one! For this, he deserves to be thanked graciously.

St. Andrew

D-I Personality
An ex-gang leader who hailed from Junon, St. Andrew is a rather brash and proud young man who is also described as being something of an oddball. He used to pass the time by fighting with other gangs, getting into turf wars with them, and stealing vehicles—his specialty being motorbikes which he used both to race and to generally cause havoc. Extremely strong when it came to street fighting and highly skilled when it came to the riding of bikes and fixing them up, he became the leader of his gang at the still-tender age of 18. His towering self-confidence was ever evident in his speech and conduct, and his exceptional achievements allowed the members of his gang to place full and complete trust in their young leader.

However, having come so far in his short life and never knowing the bitter twinge of failure and defeat, he lived life with the certainty that nothing could possibly take him down. And, as his confidence became excessive, the concept of being humble became unknown to him. It was that sense of overwhelming pride that prompted him to test out his skills by trying to steal a motorbike far more challenging.

One day, in a bid to test his limits, he broke into the Shin-Ra building with the intent of pilfering one of their vehicles. In the rather brutal fight that ensued in his attempted escape from the Shin-Ra building, he realized that perhaps he wasn’t the big shot that he thought he was. While involved in this particularly fierce skirmish, he was finally apprehended by none other than Reno and taken into custody.

It was then that he realized that if he wanted to become the best, he would have to work with the best, and that ticket lay with the Turks. Not only did he offer his services immediately to the Turks upon this realization, Veld saw his potential and decided he could be of use to them. In that way, almost simultaneously the decision to bring him into the organization was made. St. Andrew joined the Turks with his sights set on becoming the best there is in that small group, while continuing to have great aspirations for leadership.

Aside from his role in Before Crisis, he also appears in Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. In the OVA he seemed to have some familiarity with Samantha [Shotgun (Female)] due to the fact that she teases him at the end of the mission. He was also affectionately called “newcomer” by Reno before the Turks boarded the helicopter.

Miscellaneous Facts
1. He was born in Midgar, on the upper plate.
2. The speech patterns he uses in the game are rather uncouth and informal, something that’s especially evident when he’s around Reno or Rude. As a result, you don’t get a lot of that senpai/kouhai (senior/junior) dynamic that applies with the other characters.
3. He doesn’t particularly like snow.
4. Although his weapon of choice is a rod similar to the one Reno uses, his is not electrified.
5. As mentioned in the official bio, St. Andrew is something of an expert in the area of maintenance and repair of motorcycles. He is also an excellent driver for many various kinds of vehicles though his skill is particularly exceptional with motorbikes.

Rosalind

C Personality
Rosalind is a graduate of the Shin-Ra Military Academy. Originally, she had enrolled because her father was an instructor in the academy and it seemed almost that he expected nothing short of her attendance there. This idea is usually supported by the serious relationship the two share instead of the normal parent-child bond. This does not mean that the value of their bond should be underestimated, however, as it is said that they have a very strong connection. One thing did arise from her enrollment in the academy, however. Her attendance there often brought up many rumors that her entry was influenced by her father’s position within the academy. These rumors were never confirmed.

True to her serious and stern personality, Rosalind graduated from the academy with top honors and at the head of her year as valedictorian. In fact, while under her father's strict guidance, Rosalind flourished, becoming a top marksman and surpassing even the very man who taught her, no easy feat. Once her talent was fully formed, her hit accuracy was so dead-on it caused even her father to concede to her exceptional skill. It was also this flawless marksmanship that first sparked specifically Tseng’s interest in her and his great confidence in her abilities. Continuing on this note, her dead-loyal attitude was also what earned her Tseng's absolute trust. It was immediately afterwards—just graduated from the Shin-Ra Military Academy—that she was recruited into the Turks.

As mentioned before, Rosalind is incredibly loyal. She will not only stick by her comrades against all odds when in a fight, but the very concept of betrayal has never entered her mind. The only flaw in her personality lies in her seriousness. She is a person that sees the world in a strictly linear fashion, and any deviation from that perception of the world is not welcome to her. For this reason, others have often accused her of being rigid in her thinking—to put it politely—for she will often get an idea and refuse to budge from it if she thinks she is right, regardless what others claim.

She is the elder sister of Elena, bearing two key resemblances with her in that the streak of seriousness and loyalty does not deviate in either of them. However, this being said, the two are not on very good terms. When the two are made to join forces to undertake missions, for instance, their personalities often clash, for—despite their mutual dedication to their work and their exceptional skills—Elena shows a large amount of resentment for her sister. This is due largely because Rosalind constantly out-performs her younger sibling, which causes friction between the two.

As well as appearing in Before Crisis, Rosalind also appears briefly in Last Order.

Miscellaneous Facts
1. The relationship between Rosalind and her father is implied to be less of a father-daughter relationship and more of a professional one.
2. In the original dialogue of BC, she always uses proper and polite forms of speech with everybody she meets, even using the proper honorific forms when she addresses her coworkers. The only people this does not apply to are soldiers, civilians and St. Andrew.
3. She was born in the Midgar Slums.

+ Twin Guns (Male) +

User Image

Rafe

D Personality
Rafe is a former bodyguard of Don Corneo, having been under his employment for quite a large amount of time. In fact, up until the time he was recruited by the Turks, he had never gone anywhere out from under the plate, having spent his entire life there. His specialty was his succession of rapid gunfire and the nimble accuracy of it, for which he was well known. In the world he inhabited, he was something of a legend, so much so that the phrase, “By the time you see his gun, you’re already dead,” had taken permanent residence by his reputation.

Over time, Rafe grew tired of the underground world he was working in, practically cornered into. Or, more to the point, he was tired of the relentless politics that overran the scene in Wall Market, with never-ending power struggles by then a near constant occurrence, and decided he wanted out. It was around the time that he was just about fed-up with his underworld society that he got the offer to join the Turks, who had scouted him out specifically due to his exceptional skills with two guns. As the log claimed, his ability to use both guns rapidly and with blinding accuracy was a talent which the Turks deemed exceedingly useful.

Knowing that his dissatisfaction with his situation wasn’t likely to go away, and that his defection would not be looked kindly upon by the Don and his cohorts, he accepted, knowing full well he would have jumped at the chance even if he had not other threats to encourage his decision. It was, after all, common knowledge that defecting gunmen weren't allowed to live, and so he wisely made the choice to take the Turks’ offer, leaving the world below the plate and its intrigues behind.

There is one major flaw that burdens Rafe’s ability within the Turks. He has spent almost his entire life under the plate, and a large amount of time under the Don’s employment. As a result, he is used to doing things a certain way, which clashes continually with what is expected of him as Turk, as his style is very unorthodox. He often uses a thug-like approach when dealing with problems, which results in much head-butting on missions because he is now required to follow protocol. He also has issues working together with his partner or in a team, as he is used to working alone.

These were things he had a difficult time in getting used to as he now needed to succeed in a formal working environment. Especially in one such as the Turks, where the ability to follow orders and do things exactly the way Veld and Tseng demanded them done was paramount not only to his success, but to his very survival. Due to these issues, he often failed to fulfill the objectives of the various missions he was sent out on.

Nevertheless he can be either ruthless and cold in his line of work, or cool headed and an absolutely consummate professional, achieving a unique balance often times between the two. In addition to this, regardless his failure in accomplishing various objectives on his missions, he still managed to complete all of them, even when he became stuck many times during them. The one thing that has still not changed throughout his life is that he does carry out his orders, and he carries them out well.

Rafe also appears in Last Order.

Miscellaneous Facts
1. Rafe uses two handguns, which you do not see in any of the trailers. In addition to this, at first he didn’t use two of them in the early releases of the game. He only came to use them later on.
2. He was born and raised in the poor regions of the Midgar Slums.

+ Shotgun (Female) +

Samantha

I-D Personality
Samantha is presumably the only daughter of a well-to-do family, and is verily the epitome of genteel breeding, groomed as a lady who came from a good background. In accordance with her upbringing, she has developed a taste for particular hobbies that compliment that breeding. This is where her love for hunting was instilled in her, as at a very young age—while she was still just a child—her family would take her frequently on hunting expeditions. It was during these trips that she became aware of her natural talent for the sport and developed very strong skills with her weapon of choice—the shotgun.

Due to her upbringing, Samantha frequently shows off and loves to over-achieve, outdoing others’ expectations. She loves to do things flashily, and is a huge fan of big game hunting, excelling in her wielding of the shotgun even in that environment. When given a choice, she will always go for the bigger kill, which eventually transcended into her work as a Turk. Regardless her target or how impossible the situation, Samantha always goes for it anyway, regardless how little support she has from others. And, much to the surprise of those around her, whatever that bigger kill may be, she’d always without fail bring it down with just a single shot.

It was her skill in hunting and her expertise with the shotgun in particular that caught the attention of the people that recruited her into the Turks. When she was presented with the offer to join their ranks, she couldn’t wait to get started and immediately accepted.

As a Turk, Samantha would accept any job, from the big ones to the outright abnormal ones. In this way, her attitude towards her hunting echoed her actions as a Turk. While the big missions used to incite a certain zealous enthusiasm in her, the smaller missions hardly held her interest. In fact, often times she wouldn't even turn to look if the job wasn’t big enough to meet her standards.

In addition to all this, she retains an overall flashy personality, with a firm hold on her flair for the melodramatic. She has a firm grasp on who she is, and is confident in what she can do. While she uses strictly shotguns as her only form of weaponry, she enlists the use of a wide range of them depending on the mission and the tasks she is assigned.

Samantha has a close relationship with St. Andrew, as they are often seen joking around with each other, especially within Last Order, in which she also has a cameo appearance.

Miscellaneous Facts
1. She is referred to as the ojou(-san) or “young lass” by the Japanese fans. The image this conveys is that of a rich young woman belonging to a good family, or a daddy’s little girl. It is implied that her parents doted on their daughter, and she was given the best of everything, so it stands to reason.
2. She comes off as a bit over the top in the game. “I remember playing in Rescue Mode and having her rescue me. She burst in, cheerful as you please and said in a rather loud voice, ‘Rosalind! I’m here to rescue you!’ And when you have to rescue her, she even offers to protect you on the way out of the AVALANCHE compound. But… I thought I was the one rescuing you? ^_^;;”
3. She was raised in Mideel.

Durman

D-I-C-S Personality
Durman was once a detective that hailed from Costa del Sol with a hefty reputation. In this previous line of work, he had been known to solve many difficult and complex cases presented to him. This gives lie to the ‘all brawn, no brain’ stereotype that sometimes falls on him because of his choice fighting style once he joins the Turks later on. However, in contrast to his brilliance, his main flaw lies in his likewise passionate and emotional nature.

He is hot-blooded, and a courageous man, putting his all into everything he does, which carries through in his work as a Turk as well as having shown up in his previous occupation. Yet it also plays a major role in his personal life as well. His nature is one of absolutes, which is why he puts his heart and soul into every action, word and gesture. This, however, also gives him the tendency to rely on his emotions far too much, and on occasion to lose control of them completely.

In fact, it is this latter quality that eventually got the better of Durman. While working as a detective, he lost control of himself and let his emotions sway him too greatly during one case in particular. Although the case, situation and what occurred has never been disclosed, the effects of his actions were serious enough that his position became untenable, and he was forced to cease his work as a detective.

During this period of trouble, Durman was faced with the long-standing offer from the Turks to join their ranks. As it happened, they had been looking to recruit him for some time with little success. Faced with little other choice, he was almost forced to take them up on their offer and accepted.

Besides the Turks’ interest in his drive and intelligence, it is likely the well-roundedness of his physical attributes also intrigued them. However, the true back story to their reasons for at last recruiting him are mentioned fully in Episodes 7 – 9 in Before Crisis, when the Shin-Ra Executives drafted additional Turks into the field. This was done in order to help deal with the increasingly volatile situation that AVALANCHE presented in its aggressive tactics against the Shin-Ra Corporation. In that light, someone with the skills Durman presented would pose a significant aid to their cause and could not be looked over.

Like several of the other Turks, Durman also appears in Last Order. He uses his powerful fists as his only weapons.

Miscellaneous Facts
1. He is something of a gentleman. He speaks courteously to all of the female characters, which actually irritates Cyr. – “Their interactions are some of the more amusing ones I have come across while playing the game.”
2. Durman is extraordinarily strong physically. The punches he packs almost always do more damage than most of the other Turks’ attacks. However, the downside to this is that he moves rather slowly when attacking. There will be a moment’s pause during which he rears back to punch, which gives the enemy time to attack.

Cyr

C-S Personality
Out of all the recruits accepted into the Turks, Cyr is the only member to have had any experience on the battlefield professionally before being hired. Working as a mercenary for a great many years, the amount of combat she’s seen doesn’t compare to any other Turk—even those that had been employed as Turks for much longer than her upon her joining.

As such, upon her recruitment into the Turks, the demands asked of her were met easily and without fuss. In fact, she was one of the quickest to adapt to life as a Turk simply because she was used to the lifestyle. Her ease in the situation she was brought into was only emphasized by her nonchalant way of accepting and carrying out orders—nothing new for a mercenary who often had to follow the commands of a superior.

Cyr’s recruitment came with the second wave of Turks—Durman, Corin and Violet’s joining coinciding with this—when Veld decided more members were necessary to combat the growing AVALANCHE problem only a couple years after the Wutai War. Her employment was not merely due to her previous career as a ‘merc’, however. In fact, her compatibility with the Turks was only a mere plus.

So, though Cyr has a history of flawless ease as a mercenary and it was not her businesslike manner of taking care of situations that appealed to those who hired her, it certainly helped. While she tackles every situation with the goal of getting the job done with minimal protest, her work is also extremely efficient and is almost always accomplished using the least amount of effort required. This quality makes her stamina and reliability exceptionally high, while also making her rate of success and effectiveness outstanding.

She is level-headed, alert and perceptive in all of the situations she puts herself in and is able to assess these circumstances rapidly while keeping a clear mind. With this done, it is not long before she’s already made a move, taking the most prudent course of action available. This…is what made her such a potent addition to their ranks.

Cyr also is a very skilled martial artist, using a style that involves her legs more so than any other part of her body, giving it a feeling similar to Tae Kwon Do. During battle, her agility and kicking are what she relies on the most to perform her attacks, making these her greatest assets. She also uses a special type of attack that involves twisting herself in the air mid-jump and kicking out at her opponents. Executed perfectly, Cyr is capable of running through a series of these and other attacks in succession, leaving her opponents dazed and often incapacitated.

Cyr is another of the Turks that appears in Last Order, however, unlike many of the other Turks there, she has no speaking role.

Miscellaneous Facts
1.
Cyr almost exclusively uses male speech patterns. – “We’ve come to the tentative conclusion that having worked as a mercenary for as long as she has (naturally, most of those mercenaries were men) she just sort of picked up on their speech and behavioral patterns. She became, essentially, ‘one of the guys.’” – This isn’t to say that she’s ‘butch,’ because there are things about her and the way she acts sometimes that are distinctly feminine. She has probably just grown accustomed to being the way she is. – “I don’t think she even notices the gender typing issue we’ve made so much of. XP”
2. Her hometown is Icicle Inn.

Adrian

S-D Personality
Unusually, Adrian is one of the few whose story bears not only remarkable similarities to a prominent other male to live in his hometown, but whose past is shrouded in some mystery, for which the details have never been disclosed. He is a swordsman, though how he came by the prominent skills under his command is not known, and was born in Gongaga…hometown also to Zack Fair.

Many stories tell different tales about Adrian’s relationship with his hometown, which is far more complex than the man himself seems. He developed a reputation there that instills fearsome respect in the inhabitants if not stark fear itself—but this fear is not necessarily directed at the man, but rather towards his skill and his strength. This is something that clearly was not seen in such a drastic light by his townspeople until a certain incident that brought out a side of him that changed his standing amongst his home possibly to this day.

As the story goes, Adrian was still young—how young is left up to guess, but due to his actions, it is guessed not younger than his teens—when one day a friend of his was kidnapped. The reasons why and by whom are unknown, but Adrian was said to have gone after them alone in order to save and rescue his friend. The rest of the town seemed either unable or reluctant to do anything—a sign of the seriousness of the situation.

When Adrian arrived at the place where his friend was being held…he not only single-handedly defeated all the operatives in the area, but killed many of them. It was the only way in which he could save his friend. However, upon returning to his hometown with his friend safely rescued, he was faced with not appreciation but a prison sentence. He had killed many people and so was imprisoned for his heroism. For how long it is uncertain, but it seemed he never put up a protest when he met with the law and his sentence.

He would have probably remained in jail for many more years had it not been for the interest of the Turks. Although he had a startling list of offenses against him now, the Turks saw Adrian as a valuable asset, noting the potential his skills would bring to the table. For this reason they approached him with an offer to become a Turk, telling him that he would be ‘free to leave’ if he would offer his formidable talent to their service, adding that he would receive a full pardon for his crimes and amnesty. Under these conditions, he accepted their offer.

This creates a huge dynamic between himself and the remainder of the Turks from Before Crisis, for by the time the storyline of Before Crisis begins—seven full years before the events of FFVII—Adrian has already been with the Turks for many years and is considered a senior officer. He is a strong member of the Turks—due to both his skills with a katana, and his strength. However, he shows one particular soft spot, a weakness for beauty which can sometimes get him into trouble. Yet nevertheless, Adrian is considered one of the more lethal Turks in their arsenal, and it is said of him none too lightly that he ‘wields a very deadly weapon.’

Miscellaneous Facts
1.
It seems that Adrian has a few years on the First Class SOLDIER Zack Fair who also grew up in his hometown. Though the exact dates are not certain, it is clear that he is at least not younger than Zack’s age, giving it a good chance that the two knew each other at least reasonably well while growing up based on their personalities.
2. Adrian joins the playable character roster in Before Crisis very late in the game—Episode 18 out of 24—but is an experienced member of the Turks and is said to have been engaged with other assignments up until then.
3. He tends not to stay in one place for very long.

Cissnei

D-I Personality
Cissnei is a young woman whose place of birth is unknown, along with much about her origins, partially due to the fact that she spent her early years in an orphanage, her family roots left to be only guessed at. It was during her time there, while still a little girl, that she was taken out of the orphanage by the Turks who showed an interest in taking her under their wing, planning to train her to one day join their midst. Even at such an age, she showed clear talent that had sufficient potential to warrant her adoption.

This makes two clear distinctions between her and every other person to ever join the Turks. The first being that she was the youngest member to ever join in the history of the Turks—the age of her recruitment and adoption alike being rumored to be 8 years of age. The second difference was that she underwent immediate actions to be raised and taught under truly tough, almost harsh training regimes. However, this was done so that she might someday be able to live up to the role of the Turks, and was more challenging for her and not seen as cruel.

In fact, Cissnei took to the training with gusto, even at so young. Strong of mind and body alike, her outgoing personality balances itself out with how similarly warm-hearted she can be. Although, the latter has the tendency of coming off as more bossy when she directs her motherly antics towards her fellow Turks. She is never deterred from her fussing over her comrades, however, due to having decided long ago to take it upon herself to look after the other Turks—especially the junior members.

But the bossing around doesn’t bother her co-workers much either. Despite the fact that she is the youngest out of all of the Turks, she is very well respected by all the other Turks. Whether because of the fact that she was recruited at so young an age and was put through rougher training routines for such an age, or whether because they understand her great loyalty to their name and line of work—this is up for interpretation.

During battle, Cissnei wields a crimson shuriken called Rekka, which is her main weapon of choice. However, she also likes to take the time to try to solve the problems she comes across—missions included—without using it.

Miscellaneous Facts
1.
Cissnei is the only Turk with a real name, excluding the name given her by fans when Before Crisis originally first came out: “Tegwin.” Her real name is Shisuné, which means “still water.” Unfortunately, it is unclear whether this is the name she was born with, or if it was given to her when she was adopted by the Turks. However, with the coming of Crisis Core, the spelling of her name was changed from the Romanji version of Shisuné to Cissnei—presumably to make it seem more suitable for the English version.
2. Her loyalty to the Shinra Company and the Turks in particular is unquestionable. Having been raised by them, she came to realize throughout the years that, while the company has done some questionable things, they have also brought ease and progress to the lives of countless people. For better of for worse, she'll stick by them.
3. Cissnei appears in Episode 18 of Before Crisis along with Adrian (Katana). There she reveals she was on assignment in a different branch of the Turks which was why she had been absent in the game up until that point. She also appears in BC’s Special Episode of Reno, during which it is disclosed that before appearing in Episode 18 in BC, her assignment was to keep Zack Fair under surveillance.
4. Cissnei appears as a supporting character in the game Crisis Core, during which much of her absence from the game Before Crisis can thereby be filled in.

Corin

I-D-S-C Personality
Corin is by far the most pampered of all the people to join the Turks. He was born into both an exceedingly rich household—literally possessing unimaginable wealth—and has a notably privileged background in the otherwise small town of Bone Village. He lived the life of the constantly pampered, raised in an environment in which anything he wanted could be purchased, every wish of his was granted, and each whim answered instantaneously—or dang near close.

In general, Corin’s life was a safe and secure one. He was sheltered from the hardships of the world and never had any concerns or worries… and yet this was not what he wanted in life. No matter how many possessions or how much money he had, or even how good life was for him, he wasn’t happy. He didn’t want more ‘things’! What he wanted the most was to discover life on his own terms, to live a life he could call his own, not just the one he was born into.

It was this line of thinking that finally spurred Corin to stand up for himself and declare what he really wanted. It was little surprise however to those that knew him well when he verily demanded to join the Turks, perhaps a quaint sign of his upbringing’s influence on him. Yet he did such in good nature.

Corin was always bright and cheerful, an optimistic young man who never let much get him down. In fact, unlike Rafe who usually kept to himself and didn’t say much, Corin loves to talk. This, along with his striking appearance, made him an instant favorite of most of the female Turks. Yet Corin instantly got along well with almost all of his co-workers, perhaps largely because of his naturally disarming personality.

So it was that things worked out fairly smoothly for young man. His family knew well that he had admired the Turks for quite some time, and therefore most supported the decision he made, regardless how unusual and sudden it had been. The Turks as well had no objection when the wealthy heir made his request and accepted him into their midst with no problem.

As can be expected because of Corin’s desire to join the Turks and his long-standing respect for them, once he was brought into the fold, they became even dearer to him. Not only their name but the individuals that he worked with became of utmost importance to him. He was especially protective of their reputation as a whole and individually. He himself made it a point to follow their ideals every day to uphold their honor, doing everything else he could to ensure that their reputation was always maintained and never tarnished.

Miscellaneous Facts
1.
Corin is a short-range fighter, using nunchaku as his primary weapon in battle.
2. An example of his charming personality can be found in-game. During an optional mission mode, when you rescue him from an AVALANCHE holding facility and you tell him to keep his voice down, he actually says, “Oh, I’m sorry! It’s just that I was so happy to see you!”
3. Although Corin is available as a playable character from Episode 1 in Before Crisis, he originally wasn’t included in all versions of the game. The Softbank version started off as the only game that he could be selected in, though afterwards the DoCoMo version also made him available.

Violet

S-D Personality
Violet is originally from the mining town of Corel, and while outwardly she appears rather proper and ladylike, she comes from a fairly dark background. While she was still very young, Violet lost both her parents to a war—presumably the Wutai War still taking place then—unfortunately, along with the rest of her family.

Forced to grow up alone and impacted dramatically after this tragedy, Violet grew into a complex woman. Understandably, her personality was heavily influenced by her grim past, causing her to come off as curt and quite frank in many situations. Rather than dancing around a topic, Violet instead attacks it head on. Faced with such a bleak and heavy reality, the logical conclusion about her attitude is that she had no other choice but to become hardened and straightforward in order to survive.

However, despite her past and the obstacles she needed to overcome throughout most of her life, she is quiet and pleasant around others. In fact, Violet is surprisingly cheerful in spite of her abruptness. Through cheerily going about her duties, she is able to combat the emotions inside her that make her feel as though she is all alone in the world.

Violet perhaps has one of the most unique reasons for joining the Turks however—being one of the few to request membership voluntarily rather than being recruited. Through joining the ranks of the Turks, she hopes to be able to make the world a much safer place so that tragedies happen less often. This great desire undoubtedly stems from her hard past and the struggles she needed to endure.

Of course, the Turks accepted her request, finding Violet quite capable of providing another asset to their midst. In the end, Violet proved quite capable, doing very well in her job, although she does show some slight signs of clumsiness on occasion—usually due to an injury received during her line of work for the Turks—though nothing big enough to affect her work dramatically.

Her weapon of choice is the knife—specifically lines of knives not made for close combat melee damage, but rather throwing knives and other long ranged blades. With such an unusual talent, coupled with her overall effectiveness, her aim is unerring and her knives always sharp.

Miscellaneous Facts
1.
It is fortunate that Violet is so adept at throwing knives and remaining a long-range fighter, because her mobility isn’t always up to speed. On one mission in particular, Violet received a bullet wound and the injury permanently affected her movement to some extent. Although the old wound doesn’t always act up, at some times it does get in the way of her ability to move swiftly.
2. On an unusual side note, Violet is the only female Turk to wear a skirt as part of her Turk uniform—all the others wear pants.
3. As with Corin, Violet also started off exclusive to one platform only. She was available from Episode 1 on the EZWeb Mobile Phone version of the Before Crisis game, but later became available on the DoCoMo version from the start as well.

+ Legend (Male) +

User Image

Claude

C Personality
Originally from Junon, he is a super-first class agent who was once feared on the battlefield as the God of Death, and is nicknamed the "Legendary Turk". His fame attracts a great deal of attention, thus he is intensely private in both his official and personal life. He uses both chain bombs and remote controlled bombs in battle.

Miscellaneous Facts
1.
He allegedly committed war crimes during the Wutai War. He was sent under house arrest to spend his punishment for these crimes in Costa del Sol, a punishment Tseng initially questions.
2. Tseng used to dislike Legend intensely, enough for him to draw a gun on Legend when he saw him again during their second meeting. This made a dramatic change when Tseng learned the reason for why he committed the acts he did during war.

.THE SHIN-RA MISC.

+ Rufus Shinra +

User Image

Vice-President, Shin-Ra Company

Rufus spends the majority of his time plotting against his father so that he may take the reins of the company. It is later revealed that he is the main benefactor behind AVALANCHE, providing them with money, arms and information with which to fight the company. He even goes as far as ordering the Turks killed in Episode 16 in order to achieve his goals. His plans however, fall through when Fuhito betrays him. Without power or support, Rufus finds himself in solitary confinement within Shin-Ra headquarters, presumably until the AVALANCHE situation blows over.

+ Veld +

User Image

Commander-in-Chief, Turks

The overall leader of the Turks. Veld gets his orders directly from President Shinra and passes them on to Tseng, who then delegates orders to the subordinate Turks. It was Veld who made the Turks into the professional, elite group they are today. He can come off as intimidating, and even cold – his standard of what constitutes a well-executed mission is markedly more stringent than the evaluation criteria Tseng uses, and he will not hesitate to deal out appropriate consequences when the occasion calls for it. It was he that instituted the mission evaluation system – all Turks are evaluated based on every mission they undertake, with consequences for Turks that don't get their act together.

Veld's devotion to his Turks is absolute. In Episode 9, when the Turks are placed under the leadership of Heidegger, Veld makes a deal with President Shinra in order to save them from annihilation at the hands of AVALANCHE. A large condition of this deal stipulates that if Veld displeases President Shinra again, his life is forfeit. When the Turks are ordered to carry the victims of the Nibelheim accident to the Shin-Ra mansion so Hojo can perform experiments on them, he takes the entire duty upon himself, so that his subordinates needn't get tangled up in such a dirty operation.

The reason for Veld's protective attitude toward the Turks is revealed in Episode 13. He was indirectly responsible for his family's death in Kalm. After the loss of his wife and daughter, he buried himself in his work and fell back on the Turks, who became the family he no longer had.

Veld goes missing for a while after the final battle with Zirconiaide. Officially he is presumed dead – assassinated - although it is later discovered that he is alive and continuing his work with the Turks.

.AVALANCHE.

+ Elfé +

User Image

AVALANCHE Leader

Raised from a young age by AVALANCHE, she was chosen to be their leader after the founder died. She wields a katana, and her superb fighting capabilities have earned her much respect among the organization. Over the course of the story, she is revealed to be getting gradually weaker despite her superhuman strength, which came as a result of the presence of a mysterious summon materia — called "Zirconiade" — implanted within her body by Hojo.

The only others who seemed aware of the materia's existence were Aerith Gainsborough (who felt that Elfé's voice sounded nostalgic, though she was unaware that she actually recognized materia housed inside Elfé's body) and Fuhito, who intended to use Zirconiade in his plans. This summon beast is drawn from her when Fuhito summons Zirconiade in an incomplete form.

Elfé is somewhat quiet, decidedly taciturn, and surprisingly non-charismatic. She is eventually revealed to be Felicia, the daughter of Veld, leader of the Turks.

+ Shears +

User Image

Head of Battle Logistics

One of the three core leaders of AVALANCHE, he is the second strongest member of the organization in physical terms (second only to Elfé). He is often times the commander general of the organization's troops, taking charge of executing operations and formulating battle strategies. He has excellent hand-to-hand combat skills and is tremendously strong, able to bring down even Rude without too much trouble. Intensely devoted to Elfé, he guards her constantly, and is usually not far from her side. His devotion is so complete, he even once asks the Turks to defend her if he should die.

He and Fuhito are decidedly unfond of one another, at one point even arguing over how Fuhito speaks of Elfé.

+ Fuhito +

User Image

Head of Intelligence

The intellectual force behind AVALANCHE, Fuhito excels in creating battle plans. Highly knowledgeable in not just matters of science, but also in terms of tactical warfare, he is helpful with conceiving tactical solutions and providing support from a strategic vantage. However, he is very treacherous, planning to not only destroy Shinra, but also using Elfé in a plot to summon a creature called Zirconiade to fulfill his true ambitions: killing all life on the Planet so as to remove all potential threats to it, while also revitalizing it.

He is the creator of a breed of super soldiers, his countermeasure against ShinRa's own SOLDIERs. This genetically enhanced AVALANCHE force is known as "the Ravens," who serve as his personal attack squad.

There is more to Fuhito than meets the eye. Beneath his calm demeanour and smooth attitude lies a man who is willing to pay any price to achieve his ultimate goal. He is shown to have no tolerance for failure, casually killing one of his subordinates for being beaten by the Turks. Thus he obviously has no regard for human life, whether that life is that of his enemy or his ally. He subscribes to the belief that they are nothing more than coalesced spirit forms who will renew the Planet with their deaths.

He is also shown to have no patience with Shears.

.RAVENS.

+ Tierce, Kyneugh, and Kanos +

A squad of AVALANCHE members who have undergone genetic modification by Fuhito to serve as his personal attack squad. Though they have developed increased combat capabilities, as well as the ability to completely recover from normally fatal wounds, they have lost their humanity. Despite their formidable regenerative capabilities, they can be killed when properly wounded.

These three are the only Ravens mentioned by name. It is interesting to note all three of these names are taken from various minor Star Wars characters.

+ Essai and Sebastian +

Two SOLDIERs Zack is acquainted with. They are later taken prisoner and experimented on by Fuhito. The player Turk later confronts them with aid from Zack, who — unable to free them from their soulless status resulting from Fuhito's experiments — is forced to kill them.

Both of them are named after figures in Christianity. Essai is the father of David, and Sebastian is a saint.

Both of these characters also appear in a flashback during the game Crisis Core. While battling, you sometimes activate randomized cutscenes when Zack goes into his Digital Mind Wave state. This is a state in which one can see what Zack is thinking about whilst in battle. To take a direct quote from what one of our RPers said:

PorcupineCuty
They are scenes that you haven't seen before. Kinda like a behind the scenes look at what happend during a particular scene that you've been through but haven't actually seen. For example, when Zack went on the mission with Cloud and Tseng, you got to see the main story. However, later on during the DMW state, you got to see a scene with Cloud and Tseng standing next to each other with Zack being rather serious telling them that they should head back to HQ. DMW flashbacks are somewhat like easter eggs, in a way.

It is one of these scenes that shows Zack and Tseng standing in front of the graves of Essai and Sebastian.

.PERSONALITY CLARIFICATIONS.

Here we will examine and explain in more detail the four styles that had been used to describe the Original Turks' personalities.

If there is more than one letter/type for a certain character, that means that the first letter represents the strongest trait in that character's personality. The next is then the second strongest, and so on until the last/least prominent.

NOTE!

The styles are not meant to ascertain the characters' personalities perfectly, and not everything written down for a certain style will apply to them.
A character is NOT restricted to the outlined personality style. What information has been provided for the character's background and actions are the details that were used to figure out just what style seems to fit them best.

However, because there is little to no hard evidence of the actions and mannerisms of many of the Original Turks, their personalities are more than up for interpretation. What personality style has been applied to them is only there as a guideline used by the RPer in order to stay in character to whatever extent it is possible.

.THE ENDING.
Thankfully more information is being found out at last about the ending to Before Crisis. Although a complete translation of the script for the last episode has not been uncovered so far, there is the following to hopefully satisfy the desires of those who want to have a clue as to how it ended.

.THE SHORT VERSION.
In the end, Fuhito is able to draw Zirconiade from Elfé using the four Support Materias, but dies as he merges with the beast. The Turks are able to defeat Zirconiade, and are pronounced dead by the Shin-Ra Executive. However, before destroying Zirconiade, the Planet released the Jade WEAPON for its own protection. Thus, during the events of FFVII, the ten Turks (excluding Reno, Rude and Tseng), under the command of Veld, are forced to do battle with the Jade WEAPON. Afterwards, they are found to be still alive and living in the Slums.

Sacrificing himself to save Elfé, Shears is killed in battle, but she is able to survive, though her life is in a fragile state.

.EPISODE 24 SUMMARY.

03:00AM, 0007/10/5
Midgar

It begins by recapping the previous chapter, noting that the Turks split up into four groups to head for Zirconiade and Tseng shot Veld and Elfé. It then picks back up with the story.

Tseng gets into the vehicle carrying Veld and Elfé's bodies, stating that he wants to stay with them for as long as possible. Tseng tells Reno and Rude that he's doing it because it's the quickest way back to the Head Office, but Reno says, "You don't have to lie like that...", and they all ride in the vehicle together. (Aww... ;-; )

03:00AM, 0007/10/5
Midgar

The player presses on alone, going up against enemies and stuff. She reaches Zirconiade and attacks it, but the attack does nothing. Then, the other Turks begin to arrive, saying things like, "It's not over yet. Sorry about the delay." All showing off their individual personalities. Rod calls one of them an idiot showoff. They go up against it together.

They defeat Zirconiade, and it creates a massive explosion and begins to disinitgrate, causing things to start to collapse. Reno and Rude watch on but can do nothing. The (playable) Turks aren't able to make it out in time.

As Zirconiade disintigrates and the particles begin to drift through Midgar, it shows Aerith.

Aerith: "!... Snow?"

.EPILOGUE.

0007/12/9
Executive Conference Room
Shin-Ra Inquiry Council

"The following is a report regarding the actions of the Turks..."

Scarlet tells President Shinra that Turks maintained loyalty and thus survived the execution orders. Shinra tells Tseng that he will take full responsibility for the General Affairs Department, Inquiry Section, alias Turks.

???: "Sorry to keep you waiting."

Rufus enters, much to the surprise of Scarlet. When she asks him why he's back, he replies, "For the sake of the company's well being". President Shinra says, "The Company's prosperity is unshakeable!", to which Rufus responds, "It seems you've gotten pretty decrepit while I've been gone."

Rufus says that the Turks have certainly proved their loyalty by assassinating the leader of AVALANCHE as well as Veld. Tseng thanks him for "backing him up", but Rufus says that he's not doing it for his sake.

Tseng goes to tell Reno and Rude, who say something like, "So, only three of us are left?" Suddenly, there is an announcement.

"Emergency. Emergency. Intruder alert in the first Mako Reactor."

Reno: "Back to work already?"

Rude: "Let's go."

Tseng: "From here on out, the Turks will be different."

Reno: "But there's one thing that won't change."

Tseng: "Pride in our work."

Rude: "Right."

Tseng: "Let's go."

Report
0007/10/5
AVALANCHE leader eliminated.
Former Turks Chief Veld eliminated.
died in the line of duty.

Written By: Rufus Shinra

Then, a new crisis starts...

Meteor Incident
Reno, Rude, and Elena are helping evacuate citizens. As things get bad, they prepare to retreat.

???: "Giving up? I can't allow that."

Suddenly, some people arrive.

!?

Tseng: "Chief Veld!"

Reno: "You!"

Elena: "Big sister! You came."

Rude: "......"

Veld: "Chief. I'm ready for your orders."

Tseng: "!?"

: "Come on, now."

Tseng: "Right. Notice to Turks and former Turks... Take the rest of the civilians and find shelter."

"Right!!"

.SCREENSHOTS.
We've found a site that has screenshots of every episode in Before Crisis! Even including a few pictures of the secret Tseng Episode!

.ZIRCONIADE.
We have a picture of Zirconiade at last! [x]

Zirconiade is the legendary World Burning Summon, capable of killing all life on the Planet. It's said that if all the neccesary support materia are used during the summon, the Zirconiade produced will be invincible.

Zirconiade is among the ancient materia left behind by the Cetra. To summon it, the summoner must use the summon materia in addition to several support materia. Without the Support Materia, it will absorb the life from the summoner until they die, and be unable to reach its complete form. In contrast, with all the support materia, it will become a nearly unbeatable summon, though the summoner will live.

.ELFÉ.
Elfé's power seemed to be, in part, because of the materia (Zirconiade) in her body. Materia contains the knowledge of the Cetra, so that could explain why Aerith felt a sort of familiarity for her.

Supposedly the only reason Zirconiade drained the life of Elfé was because Hojo experimented on her and literally implanted the materia within her body. Materia is never supposed to be used that way within a living organism because of how it can sap the life of the person wielding it. Due to the Zirconiade materia being so potent when used by itself, it would continue to sap the life force of Elfé until it either kills her and summons the beast, or the support materia finishes the summon without killing her. If the Zirconiade materia within Elfé was allowed to kill her, Zirconiade also would've finished being summoned and all would be lost.

.TSENG'S SECRET MISSION.
This mission place roughly around ten years before FFVII, in one of Tseng's first missions as a Turk. (Ultimania Omega states that by FFVII, Tseng has been a Turk for ten years.)

Tseng is patrolling the Plate of Midgar when he hears that soldiers from Wutai have taken the guards at one of the Mako Reactors hostage and are attempting to steal company secrets. Tseng is sent to stop the Wutai soldiers from stealing the info.

Veld orders that his personal feelings are not to intervene and that the data is more important than the lives of the guards. Tseng is at odds with this, however, and makes his duty the rescue of the guards rather than the retrieval of the info.

(What happens in between is a bit cloudy. I'm not sure if Tseng is captured or simply tracks the Wutai soldiers himself.)

Veld comes to help Tseng and, pulling him from out from where he is trapped, both are caught in an explosion. Tseng is taken to hospital and put on life support while Veld walks away with only a scar on his face.

Following this, Veld is ordered to locate and obliterate a black market salesman who is illegally trying to sell a Shin-Ra weapon and ammo to the Wutai army. The unintentional destruction of Kalm follows.

.Special Episode of the Legendary Turk.
This Extended Summary was originally provided by S and G on TheLifestream.net. It has been taken from there in its full version and will be split into three parts below. Enjoy~

Mission 1

10/01/01

With the end of the lengthy War between the Empire of Wutai and the Shinra Company inevitably approaching, many people across the Planet rejoice in the prospect of peace for the first time in over eight years. However, Chief of Turks, Verdot, is much less optimistic. Believing it only to be a matter of time before a new threat rises in the wake of Wutai’s defeat at the hands of the Shinra Army, he decides that he must take pre-emptive action; recalling a certain man to the Turks.

Tseng arrives at the Turk Headquarters having been summoned by Verdot, and is told that he is to go to Costa del Sol and recall the man who was placed under house arrest there. Tseng is confused by the circumstances, knowing that the man had been sent there because of his actions in an incident two years before, and wonders if it would be a good idea to allow him to return given that he is still on probation. Verdot explains that due to the increased activity of anti-Shinra organizations, it is important that they are well prepared and that the Turks need the man’s power. He tells Tseng that his assignment is to persuade the man by all means necessary to return to duty. Tseng is highly reluctant, but says that he will do whatever the Chief asks.

Arriving in Costa del Sol, Tseng goes to the house where the man is supposed to be. Discovering him not to be there, he begins to search the town. Coming to the town square, he meets two young sisters named Juli and Rose and shows them a picture of the man, asking them if they know of him. The girls giggle and say that they do, and discuss between themselves that they had seen him with Jesse earlier and Katherine the day before. They say that he is a charming man and is friends with everyone.

They ask Tseng if he is a friend of the man. Tseng strongly refutes this, but asks if they know where he is now. They point him in the direction of the beach and he thanks them. The two sisters walk off towards the Bar del Sol arguing about which one of them is next to go on a date with the man. Tseng is annoyed that the man has been enjoying himself too much.

Tseng follows their information and soon finds the man he is looking for standing on the beach, dressed in a black suit, smoking a cigar as he looks out to sea. He slowly approaches the man from behind, but the man chuckles to himself and, without turning around, tells Tseng that when closing in on the enemy, he should learn to quiet his footsteps like he was taught. Tseng is stunned as he believes he had remained silent.
The man says that they have not seen one another since his last mission in 1999 and asks if Tseng has come to saddle him with punishment as well. Tseng replies that he has come for a different reason, causing the man to laugh. He explains that he has come because Verdot needs his strength and has requested he rejoin the Turks. The man asks Tseng if he thinks that having spent time in such a beautiful place, with the sun and cheerful women, he would actually want to return to Midgar. He says that he may not be as strong as he used to be as he has not been training the same way that Tseng has, and decides that they will do battle to test out his abilities.

The two duel; Tseng using his pistol to defend himself as the man tosses bombs in his direction, moving quickly to avoid the explosions. Tseng tries to read the pattern of the man’s attacks, hoping that he has a chance of winning. The man mocks his aim as they fight, watching Tseng struggle as, although he has improved, the man is still too fast and powerful. He arrogantly offers advice as he dodges Tseng’s bullets, telling him that it is fatal on the battlefield not to take advantage of openings to kill one’s enemies. Finally coming to rest, he chuckles as Tseng continues to aim at him, and says that it is exactly the same as the first time they met. Tseng begins to remember the events of that day.

(Special Episode of the Legendary Turk -- Part Two)

Mission 2

11/10/99

During the Wutai War, a special secret agent working with the Turks had proven himself far stronger than any of his peers. Formerly a member of an anti-Shinra organization in the early years of the War, he was a man with great battle experience, and ultimately played a large role in the War for both sides. Never knowing his real name, the soldiers of Shinra gave him the title ‘Death God of the Battlefield,’ and he was feared by enemies and allies alike. With his incredible power and fighting abilities, he had become a hero to many of his fellow Turks, achieving the rank of super first class, and the status of ‘Legend.’ However, not everyone approved of his role as a Shinra operative.

Verdot stands in the Turks Headquarters with one of the special Turk agents waiting for Tseng, and tells the agent that he was once involved in one of Tseng’s first missions as a new Turk. As Tseng arrives, he immediately recognizes the man as the Death God, and aims his gun at him. He asks the Chief if he has already forgotten what happened three years before, and that he finds the idea of the man acting as a Turk after his war crimes completely unacceptable. (Side note: It may seem strange that Tseng had been a Turk for approximately 3 years and had never been introduced to Legend, but recall in the main game that the playable characters were not aware of Cissnei and Katana’s existence until after episode 17 which took place 3 years after they joined.)

Verdot orders Tseng to lower his gun so that he may explain himself. As Tseng does so, Legend taunts him, saying that even though Tseng wants to kill him, he still obeys the rules, and that only a weak man would pull a gun on a comrade in such a manner. Furious, Tseng raises his weapon again, but Verdot puts a hand on the pistol to stop him.

Verdot explains that he appreciates Tseng’s feelings towards the Death God after their personal history from three years before, but that Legend has been a Turk for some time and Tseng of all people must understand what he is capable of. Verdot says it was he himself who persuaded the Legend to join the Turks. Tseng remembers how Legend had become famous for his participation in the bitter battles against the Shinra Army, but acknowledges that he did not doubt the man’s immense abilities. Verdot says that sometimes in war there exists something that cannot be destroyed, something that is irreplaceable, and to remove such an existence would mean weakening your enemy beyond repair. Tseng understands that Verdot is referring to the recruitment of the Death God, and knows that he will have to get over his personal feelings.

Although reluctant, Tseng introduces himself to the Legend. He is stunned when Legend nonchalantly calls Verdot ‘old boy’ before declaring that he is leaving to start the mission as he has wasted enough time. Verdot asks Legend if he needs an explanation of the details of his assignment. Legend replies that it is not necessary as Tseng will be acting as his support and he expects him to send the details to his PHS. The Death God leaves the room, and Tseng, perplexed by the man’s attitude and Verdot’s tolerance of it, scurries after him.

The Legend arrives at a secret Shinra military factory somewhere in Wutai which has been overrun, analyzing the windy weather conditions and surroundings as he prepares to begin his mission. He has to make a decision between the use of time bombs or remote-control bombs and, feeling in the mood for something flashy, decides that the use of both types would satisfy him and prove beneficial for the assignment. (Side note – these two types of bombs are the weapons of Legend which he uses in battle. Time bombs are set on the ground and explode after a set time, and when two are placed in close proximity, they can create a chain-bomb effect. Remote-control mines are ones where the player has control over when they go off, but they explode after 15 seconds if no action has been taken.)

Tseng calls him to ensure he knows the details of his assignment. The Legend confirms he has to rescue the kidnapped ‘old boy’ and completely eliminate the abductors. Tseng gets annoyed with Legend’s overuse of the term ‘old boy,’ and tells him to refer to the captive’s real name of Mr. Liner instead – a weapons trader that has a connection to Shinra. (Side note – the name of the arm dealer is a strange one because some of the translations refer to him as Liner, others Mr. Liner, and some as ‘the liner.’ I’ve put it in as his name at the moment, but this is subject to change if anyone can advise me otherwise.) Tseng says that the enemy has occupied the Company’s military factory and the President has ordered their disposal before they can leak information and secrets about the existence of the factory gained from the captured Liner.

Legend asks if the criminals have made any demands, and Tseng tells him that there were two made a short time ago; money to fund their activities and the release of political prisoners from Corel Prison. (This is a blatant continuity error on SE’s part since Corel Prison was only established after the destruction of Corel five years later.) Tseng tells Legend that if the Shinra refuse to meet these demands, the rebels have threatened to expose the highly classified secrets of the facility and distribute the weapons around the world.

Tseng tells the Legend that reports say there are approximately forty people inside the facility and that he should be cautious, but the Legend decides to attack them head on rather than sneak inside. He bets Tseng that he can complete his mission within ten minutes. Tseng is stunned that he thinks the task can be completed so quickly, and replies that gambling is not a principal that the Turks should adopt, but says that the Legend should perform to the best of his ability and complete the task in that time anyway.

Coming to the entrance of the facility, the Legend is met by mercenary soldiers. They do battle, but the Legend is far too powerful and fast for them, defeating them with ease by using his chain bombs. Following the explosions, sirens go off to alert more rebels to the intrusion and they come running as the smoke rises. The Legend kills them all with his bombs, telling them that he has brought hell to them as they scream in agony.

Making his way inside the building, the Turk finds a spacious factory area with a number of pillars keeping the upper levels of the building aloft. Tseng calls him and verifies the blueprints of the facility and the location at which the hostage is being held on the second floor. He orders him to strategically place explosives at five points throughout the factory so that the detonation will cause the facility to collapse.

Hanging up, the Legend quickly places three bombs on the designated pillars and machinery across the lower level. At the rear of the area, there is a set of stairs leading to the second level. Running along a passage, he comes to a dead end where a soldier waits. The Legend attacks him, but even after the man states that he was someone who worked with the Legend during the conflict in 1995, the Legend shows no mercy in killing him. Planting a fourth bomb and retracing his steps, he comes to another dead end and is attacked by another mercenary. The man accuses the Legend of being ruined by the Shinra by becoming a Turk, to which he replies that the battlefield has not changed for him – he just fights on a different side now. Defeating the man, he hurriedly places the final explosive well within the ten minute window, and gets another call from Tseng.

The Legend sighs as he recalls who he was back then. He asks Tseng if he would give it all up for the women, and Tseng answers that he wouldn’t have the patience. Legend believes he has become a bitter person, and when Tseng asks him what he plans to do when his probation ends, he says that he will leave Costa del Sol. Tseng is surprised by this but Legend explains it is because he has come to find the place too busy and that he too has become impatient with the women. Tseng wishes him luck, leaving Legend wanting to cut all ties with his former life, and again reflect on his actions two years earlier.

Hurrying down the passage of the military factory’s second floor towards the location Tseng had targeted as the Liner’s whereabouts, the Death God is confronted by waves of mercenaries. Fighting his way through enemy after enemy with his bombs, leaving them pleading for the pain to end, he navigates the corridors, blowing down walls as he goes.

In a room at the centre of the facility, a squad of soldiers and their leader stand guard over the kidnapped weapons dealer. Hearing the explosions grow closer, the leader orders his men into formation. Suddenly, there is a blast at the side of the room, creating a gaping hole from which Legend emerges. He declares he has come to rescue the ‘old boy’ (Liner), and immediately notices him dressed in a blue suit, gagged, and bound by his hands and feet to a chair in the middle of the room. The hostage has a strange look in his eyes as he sees the Legend and tries to say something, but his words are muffled. Legend thinks the kidnapping appears amateurish, and tells Liner to hold on just a bit longer.

The squad leader calls out to Legend, saying that the unique sound of his bombs has not changed. Legend says that it has been a long time since they saw one another. The man admits that he never expected the feared Death God of the Battlefield to have joined Shinra, and the Legend replies that he has only lent his powers. The leader states that even the Death God cannot escape from such a predicament, and orders the soldiers to surround him. Watching the men come toward him, he answers that he has two principles; never make a woman cry, and never throw down a game. The man says that he has never heard the Legend say that before and that maybe he is different from before, but does not halt the mercenaries advancing. Legend shrugs and says that it is a shame it had to come to this and, as he does so, he pulls out the detonator for the bombs he has set and flicks the switch.

The bombs on the pillars downstairs go off as expected, causing the floor beneath the approaching soldiers to cave in. Screaming, all the soldiers disappear and plummet to their death, leaving only the Turk, the squad leader and Liner remaining. Legend comments that he has not destroyed so much of a building and annihilated so many enemies at once since his role in the anti-Shinra maneuvers in 1995. The man says that he should be happy that he has not lost any of his ability over time, and the Legend replies that it is only natural given the way he uses his bombs. He says that is the only way to prove he is really alive on the battlefield.

The leader sarcastically says that he is afraid, and the two are thrust into an intense battle. Using his speed and skilled techniques, the Legend is victorious after a short time. Wounded, the leader falls to his knees. Gasping painfully, he gestures towards the Liner, saying that he heard a rumor about what happened during the negotiations in 1997. Legend asks him if he is referring the mission in which he participated, and he responds that the truth will stay with him for eternity. As he says it, the ceiling collapses on top of his body, crushing him.

Disappointed but showing no fear as the building shakes around him, Legend unties the weapons dealer, recalling the arms negotiation mission of 1997. As the ropes fall away, Liner leaps from the chair, pulling the gag from his mouth as he shouts angrily at the Legend for wasting time and not releasing him sooner when the facility was crumbling. As the Legend looks upon the man’s scarred face, Liner spits habitually, and commands the Turk to lead him out safely. Hearing his voice, Legend stops in his tracks, realizing at once that he recognizes it. It strikes him how easy it is to alter one’s face and name, but not voice.

As he turns to look at the weapons trader, Tseng calls to ask the status of Mr. Liner and tells Legend to hurry up as the time window for escape is closing fast. Legend replies by telling Tseng that Verdot will have a record of what he told him back in 1997, and hangs up. As he does so, Liner inquires if that was the Turks phone aid and asks why he disconnected the call for his own convenience.

The Death God casually asks if he remembers the events of 1997. Liner shouts that they don’t have time to talk, but the Legend repeats the question. Liner says that he will get himself out, but the Legend will have to pay him if he wants to ‘inspire’ him to remember. As chunks of ceiling fall down around them, the arms dealer becomes frantic and pleads for them to leave. Speaking softly, the Turk asks Liner if he is a gambling man, and bets that the weapons trader would give up his memories in order to leave the facility safely. Liner asks the Death God if he is insane, to which he responds by asking why Liner will not protect his own life by offering up the information. Liner then asks if it is a usual occurrence that the Turks abandon their duty. Legend tells the dealer that he will do it before anyone realizes what has happened, and leaves Liner behind, screaming Legend’s name as the building falls.

Later at Turk Headquarters, Tseng approaches Verdot to ask about Legend’s punishment after he deliberately quit his assignment. Verdot answers that in light of his immaculate past record with Shinra, he has been sent to Costa del Sol to be placed under house arrest for a long time. Tseng is very angry with what he feels is an injustice that an individual with Legend’s history is punished for abandoning his mission and leaving a Shinra official to die by sending him to a tropical resort, but bites his tongue. Observing Tseng’s reaction, Verdot reminds him that Shinra’s executives feared the highly classified information Mr. Liner held and the secrets of the military factory would be leaked. He explains that although the Legend did not complete his duty, he guaranteed that the threat posed would be removed.

Tseng comprehends that it has been determined that the damage caused by the Legend is less than what Shinra would have lost if the information had been leaked. He says that although they have only worked together once, it is testament to how exceptional a top class agent Legend actually is given that he can still expect to be successful in his main objective while abandoning the mission, but admits that he has no idea why the Death God did what he did. Verdot asks him if the Legend mentioned anything about 1997 in his last phone call, to which Tseng replies that he had.

Verdot asks Tseng if he knows what incident Legend was referring to. Tseng says that if he remembers correctly, it was an incident in late 1997 when an anti-Shinra organization took occupation of a Mako Reactor and threatened Shinra. Verdot says that he is correct, and at that time it was Mr. Liner who was offering to provide the organization with weapons. Tseng is surprised to learn that Liner was previously associated with and traded with anti-Shinra groups, and Verdot reveals that his connection was very close.

Verdot asks Tseng if he was aware of the outcome of the incident. Tseng answers that he knew the anti-Shinra force’s operation failed, and that official reports stated that there were only two unnamed survivors. Verdot states that it is highly probable that the man known as Mr. Liner was one of the survivors, and Tseng gasps as Verdot confirms that the other was the Death God. Tseng realizes that after the incident, the arms trader had changed his name to Liner and had facial surgery to hide his identity and his past, and it seemed had later began trading with Shinra. (Side note – it doesn’t specifically say so anywhere, but I reckon this is the same arms dealer who was trading with anti-Shinra groups during the Special Episode of Tseng. He was thus indirectly responsible for Tseng being put in intensive care, Verdot getting his scar, and ultimately Kalm being bombed. As far as I can make out, this all occurred before the incident with Legend.)

Verdot recalls that on that day, he went to the Mako Reactor immediately after the incident to confirm the facility’s condition. He says that the Death God was there and that he, Verdot, was afraid, and that he put himself on guard, but the Legend simply tossed away his weapons. Verdot says that he had something in his left hand; a single red shoe. He says that the Legend opened his mouth and said gently, “I will not cry for the sake of my family, but instead mourn this day for their death.”

Verdot reveals that Legend did not speak about the incident after that, only to say that he never did anything but bring forth battle. He guesses that Mr. Liner used the relationship he had with the Death God and his peers to betray them using a weapons negotiation. As a result, his comrades (family) were killed – including a little orphan girl (whom I guess the shoe belonged to) – and he only survived because of his strength. Verdot asks Tseng what he would have done if faced with the same situation as Legend at the military factory, having learned of the incident in 1997, to which the young Turk cannot give an answer.

(Special Episode of the Legendary Turk -- Final Part)

Mission 3

10/01/01

On the beach in Costa del Sol, Tseng stares off into the distance, thinking about the events of two years before. Legend asks him what is wrong, and Tseng says that he has never understood what it feels like to be betrayed. He admits that if put in Legend’s situation where his comrades had been killed and he lost the little girl who was very special to him, he may too have acted the same way when confronted with the weapons dealer. The Legend is silent after he hears this, surprised by Tseng’s words.

Tseng again requests that the Death God returns to duty with the Turks, stressing the fact that his powers are needed. Blowing on his cigar, Legend reminds him that he does not feel the same way about Shinra as Tseng does, especially after discovering that they were in league with Liner. He says that the world has enough to worry about, but that they are prepared to match it (I assume he means that the Turks are ready for whatever is thrown at them), commanding Tseng to tell the old boy (Verdot) that he refuses their request.

Legend then says that to tell the truth, it had been troubling him if he was worthy of returning to the Turks (not physically – its sounds like remorse for his actions), and wishes to turn over a new leaf. Tseng is shocked to hear Legend opening up his heart to him, but says that he understands, even if it means he is turning his back on them. As he leaves, Tseng tells the Legend that should he change his mind, it is not only Chief Verdot who awaits his return, but he would also look forward to one day fight alongside him again.

01/02/02

In the aftermath of the Wutai War there rose many anti-Shinra militant groups, some hailing from what remained of the Wusheng, others from elsewhere. Of these enemies, one group proved more of a challenge to Shinra than any other. They were known as AVALANCHE. Since AVALANCHE’s first attack on the Shinra Company a year before, the Turks had been given the duty of combating the group and tracking their movements while SOLDIER fought off other enemies.

Following a series of confidential information leaks to AVALANCHE, President Shinra held Verdot accountable for the Turks’ failure to do their job of keeping the company’s secrets safe, and ordered his demotion to another department. As a result, Tseng was promoted to the Chief of Turks, answerable to the incompetent Head of the newly-formed Department of Public Safety Maintenance, Heidegger. (Side note – after Verdot’s demotion and Lazard’s disappearance, the General Affairs, Security and SOLDIER Departments merged under an umbrella title to form the Department of Public Safety Maintenance.)

When the Turks are given the trivial task of acting lookout in Junon, an army of AVALANCHE operatives attack the city. The Turks have been given explicit instructions by Heidegger to report any incident so that he may deploy the Shinra Army to take on the militant group. However, under Heidegger’s poor leadership, the Turks are outnumbered and AVALANCHE begin to take control of the city. Meanwhile, watching the events unfold on the monitors at Shinra Headquarters, Verdot decides that he must take action, calling an old friend. (Side note – as far as I can make out, the game shows the following conversation taking place from Verdot’s perspective, i.e. from the monitor room. It doesn’t state anywhere where Legend actually is at this point. It can be assumed he is still under house arrest in Costa del Sol, but he could be anywhere, although smart money would have him somewhere where Junon is easily accessible.)

Legend answers Verdot’s telephone call, stating that it has been a long time since they spoke, and asks what’s wrong when he immediately detects Verdot’s voice is without its usual vitality. Verdot informs him that he has lost command of the Turks, and Legend laughs, telling him he thinks that’s very amusing. Verdot says that he has a favor to ask. Legend says that the Shinra are likely to be monitoring the call, but Verdot advises him that he has ensured the line is encrypted.

Verdot then asks Legend directly to fight for the Turks. Legend asks him if he remembers what he said when they met for the first time at the Mako Reactor; that he did nothing but bring conflict. Verdot tells him that it was because Shinra were trying to end the prolonged Wutai War that he requested that the Death God join them again. Legend answers that he has no reason to return to the Turks since the War is over, but Verdot says that the War is not over yet, leaving him puzzled.

Verdot informs him of AVALANCHE and their current movements to try and destroy Junon, and that the Turks are caught in the middle of it. Verdot says that these days, Shinra and the Turks don’t have the necessary strength to deal with such a situation, and that they need his power. Legend comments that the circumstances seem drastic if Verdot would go to the extent of calling him, and Verdot replies that he is begging him to return. (Side note – bear in mind that Legend actually comes from Junon, so Verdot may be playing on that a bit.)

Agreeing, Legend asks what the situation is. Verdot explains that Heidegger has taken command, but that Shinra’s efforts are in chaos due to his inept orders. He tells the Legend that his task is to ensure the safety of Junon’s civilians. When Legend asks who will be in charge, Verdot informs him that he has a plan to lay down his life in order to regain authority. (Side note – for anyone who doesn’t know, Verdot’s plan is to threaten President Shinra that he will go public with Shinra’s secrets if he is not reinstated as Chief of Turks. Angered by the blackmail, the President does what he asks, but warns him that anything but complete loyalty on his part will result in execution.) Legend says to leave it to him.

The Legend arrives in Junon and is quickly surrounded by AVALANCHE operatives. He orders the ‘boys’ to let him pass as he is in a hurry to get to the trouble spot up ahead. The soldiers say that if he is trying to get somewhere, then losing time could prove fatal, and engage him in battle. Using his bombs to defeat enemy after enemy, one of the AVALANCHE soldiers realizes who he is, questioning why the Death God is working for the Turks. The Legend gasps as he remembers how much he had missed the unique sound of his bombs, declaring that he will take care of fifty enemies while the ‘old boy’ regains authority.

Battling his way through hoards of AVALANCHE operatives, the others involved in the fighting take notice of his actions. Realizing his strength, Elfé orders her troops to retreat. Elsewhere, Reno and Rude notice the change in AVALANCHE’s movements and a decrease in their numbers as they draw back. Tseng deduces that the Turks have regained control of the situation and decides that they will remain defending Junon until Verdot is reinstated. Believing his return to leadership to be imminent, the Legend and the Turks continue to fight until they successfully overcome the chaos in the city. (Side note – for anyone wishing to know further how this was achieved, read episode 9 of the main story which can be found at Dark Angel’s website: Gunshot Romance, linked to above.)

Later at the Turk Headquarters, Verdot shares his appreciation with Tseng and the Turks following his orders well and settling a dangerous situation. He tells them that before he says anything more, he would like to introduce someone. As he speaks, the Legend enters the room, leaving Tseng stunned. Verdot reveals that when they were struggling at Junon Harbor, he got the Legend to fight for them. Tseng realizes that the sudden decrease of AVALANCHE in the middle of the battle was because of the Legend’s involvement.

Legend says that the ‘old boy’s’ safety came before everything else, to which Verdot responds that it appears it was not their time to die. Legend jokes that it is simply not in Tseng’s character to die. (Side note – I think this is a reference to Tseng’s supposed ‘9 lives’). Verdot says that Tseng is likely to be the one to inherit the leadership of the Turks. Legend wishes him success in his career and that since he is the ‘newcomer,’ he would have to take orders from Tseng.

Tseng finds the Legend’s words odd as it would be a big mistake to consider him a newcomer. Turning to the others, he asks if everyone knows who the Legend is. He tells them that it is easy for everyone to find faults in others rather than themselves, but that if they knew what had led to his house arrest, they would understand his actions. Reno begins to fear the man as he realizes that the rumors are true while Rude thinks that the man is a legend and not someone to be crossed since his actions are forgiven, and worries that Reno will have to be careful.

Tseng tells them that he guarantees the man’s ability, as before he joined the Turks he was once feared as the Death God of the Battlefield. Reno becomes even more scared, but Rude is unsure if someone that abandoned their duty should be given the opportunity to be reinstated. Turning to the Legend, Verdot asks him if he has settled upon an answer. The Legend responds that he has thought about what Verdot has asked, and decided that he will entrust his life to the Turks.

The one called the ‘Death God of the Battlefield,’ a man known as a Legend within the Turks, returned to them. Those who know of his history do so with fear and wonder. But, he will never again look back on his own past…forever will it sleep in the darkness of the battlefield….
