Affirmation of or Asserting the Consequent

Description: An affirmation of the consequent is when someone uses the correct logic "if p, then q", but instead of a correct assertion "p, therefore q", the flawed assertion "q, therefore p" is given.

Example: If an atom is an argon atom, it has a full outer shell. However, if an atom has a full outer shell, it is not necessarily argon. (It could also be krypton, xenon, etc.)

Argumentum ad Consequentiam or Appeal to Consequences

Description: Despite its similar naming, an appeal to consequences is not the same as an affirmation of the consequent. Instead, it is a type of wishful thinking, wherein an assertion p is taken to be true or false simply because the premiss leads to good or bad consequences, respectively.
