Okay, well, this is a LITERATE RP Guild, so I believe that everyone here should already know all their grammar and stuff. 3nodding The reason I am making this thread is because I get freakin' aggravated when I see some people bending simple grammar rules. So, if ya have any minor annoyances with people who simply cannot write properly, post it here so we all know!

When people mix up there, their, and they're.
Honestly, it ain't so freakin' difficult. "There" is a place, "Their" is the possessive form of they, and "They're" means "They are".

Your and You're
Your = Possessive
You're = You are

Its and It's
Its = Possessive
It's = It is

Get it right, noobs!
(Not directed to anyone here, obviously... sweatdrop Sorry.)

Agreed! >[

Although, it's the common misspellings that really bug me. ESPECIALLY when people spell "tomorrow" as "tomarrow". Oh God. I'll smack a ho. Also, it seems that most people have trouble spelling the words "definite" and "definitely" right.

Not like my grammar/spelling is perfect, but I at least make an effort. I also make use of Firefox's very nice spell checker. ;D

Lol, awesome. Firefox is cool, I like it better than IE. However, it always seems to come in second, I guess because it isn't Microsoft-produced, so there are always little bugs for which the fixes come in a little later. But that's okay ^^

Yeah, don't even get me started on spelling. "Necessarily", "February"... I'm sure there are more, but I haven't seen any recently that have stuck to mind, lol. Which is good, it means I am surrounded by happy, decent, spelling/grammar-loving people who don't get on my nerves simply by typing. Yay!

Yes! I can finally say that I've met people more OCD about grammar than me. About other things however....

I've got a big thing about punctuation. People need to use their gosh darned commas and apostrophes! If it isn't part of the actual thought, you know, like this, it needs commas. If you mean to pause somewhere, you need a comma. Cripes. And if you're going to use slang or write in a vernacular style, that's fine, but do it correctly. If you want to say "getting ready to," it's "fi'in'a," not "fitinna" (fixing to). If you want to shorten "because," it's not "coz, cos, cuz, cus," or any of the previous with an apostrophe in front, but it's not "cause" either. A "cause" is a reaction, the opposite of an effect. It's "'cause." Get it right.

Don't even get me started on people abusing the ellipses. Argh.

I read things aloud in my head, so every punctuation mark in there is registered. If there isn't the right punctuation, I instinctually label your writing as garbage. So get it right.

Just to let you grammar freaks, bigger than me that is, should I ever make a post with lots of semi colons before or after a space, it's because I am in dire need of a new keyboard, but don't have the money. It happens randomly.

What are ellipses? sweatdrop
PostPosted: Wed Nov 21, 2007 5:15 pm

an ellipsis is three dots to imply a trailing off/absence of thought or the skip of unnecessary information between words in a direct quote.

"..."

Examples:
"Joe answered, 'Well, I'm not so sure that he's guilty..."

(quoting the statement, "Jack explained that, because he was not a homosexual and had no attraction whatsoever to other men, he would not sleep with Alex.")
"Jack explained that ... he would not sleep with Alex."

Oh. Ok. I'll sometimes do that, but I tend to copy from what I see so that's how I picked up on it. I've also seen professional writers do the same thing sometimes.

I try hard to get the right grammar and punctuation into my writing. And if I post, then notice something wrong, I usually go back and fix it. Though, being human, I screw up.

It's one thing to have them reasonably interspersed where they belong, but throwing in seven dots for an ellipsis, believe it or not, is grammatically incorrect. Also, I see people use an ellipsis where they need a comma. That's really obnoxious.

Non-Example:
"'So, what do you want for dinner tonight?' Sally asked her husband.
'Hmm.......I don't know, Sally............Make whatever you feel like tonight,' he answered."

Corrected:
"'So, what do you want for dinner tonight?' Sally asked her husband.
'Hmm... I don't know, Sally, make whatever you feel like tonight,' he answered."

Ah, its amazing to make the acquaintance of my fellow Grammar Nazis. My biggest pet peeves are punctuation and capitalization, although simple spelling errors, things that are usually just caused by high-speed typing, tend to get on my nerves.

I tend to use a lot of commas, usually for extraneous information. So I apologize if I get too far off of my original topic, but my intentions are always for the best.
