Do you think the antagonists are more perfect or less perfect then they are made to be in the books?

It has been discussed by Snape fans that perhaps he does not, in fact, have a physical appearance as unpleasant as is really described in the books. I am talking about the greasy hair, etc. This theory is based upon the fact that all descriptions of Severus-all Slytherins, in fact-come from the prejudice Harry Potter.

Can his descriptions really be trusted? Could the negative traits of our House members taken out of proportion?

I understand that if J. K. Rowling wanted them to be perfect little angels, she probably would have described them as such. But the readers are allowed to interpret too. What are your interpretations?

I think they're portrayed as sort of... well, ugly because we don't want hot bad guys, otherwise we'd like them a lot more. Like Draco being 'pale and pointy with cold gray eyes'. It could easily be described as 'alabaster skin, high cheek bones and silver eyes' and it casts a completely different picture.

I feel that Slughorn is over exaggerated, mentioning that he 'took up one-fourth of the room' would be technically impossible unless the room was about 8 feet in perimeter, or if he was morbidly obese, but then he couldn't walk, which he clearly does.

I think Snape washes his hair ONCE IN A WHILE. He probably plays with potion's ingredients and then runs his hands through his hair in frustration, thus making it greasy. But if he never showered or something, then he would smell, be greasy, and lotsa other stuffs that's unpleasant. O_o

...GO BUCKBEAK!

Have you ever read Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small series? In it is a antagonist named Joren. He looks quite a bit like Draco, with the same hair and skin, but with blue eyes, except Keladry [the main character] describes him as being beautiful from the start. But only skin deep, of course, because the guy is an a**.

I like charismatic baddies. They are more fun and more interesting. I wish more authors were comfortable enough to have a bad guy who is loveable too.

But part of Joren's characterisation is that he is, and I quote, "...an unachievable dream of perfect manhood". He was Wyldon's golden boy until Kel came along. Draco, on the other hand, was a spoilt brat right from the start. As he is presented in canon, he has very few redeeming qualities, and we only see snatches of real humanity from him - the scene in Borgin and Burkes from CoS where he is resentful of Hermione, his conversation with Dumbledore in HBP and the events of DH.

Ah, you know, I can't really recall the last time that I read Tamora Pierce. It's been a long time, lol.

Honestly, I have to agree with Blood Bunneh. The whole Harry Potter series is written from Harry's point of view, and he does have his own biased opinion that he weaves in throughout the description of certain characters. Probably, on top of Harry's biased view, JKR uses certain words to make characters that she wants to be... evil, or antagonists, look the part.

I do like Tamora Pierce's bad guys, though. They have a personality behind the evil, lol.

Nymph, in thy orisons... -.-.-|

---[ I guess so. But you know, some people are just pale and pointy with grey eyes. And that's okay - Harry Potter isn't a soap opera full of impossibly handsome actors, it's supposed to be (a little) realistic. ]---

I believe that the characters in the book are, indeed, described in a way that Harry sees them. And, frankly, Harry is a straight, teenage boy. He's not likely to look at Draco and think of him as cute or hot or beautiful, or anything like that. He's likely to see a boy, and not use the same descriptive words as he would a girl.

Snape's hair probably is greasy, but, as many fanfictions mention, he's a potions master. He's constantly in fumes and such, and his hair is probably effected by the different chemicals that are in the steam and fumes that come off his potions. He might be the sort of person who brushes his hands through his hair, as mentioned, which, even if they're clean and not covered in oil from ingredients, will make your hair oily.

. . .
Oh.
And, uh. . .
Tamora Pierce FTW.
I loved Protector of the Small.
That was Kel's series, right?
She's my favorite author.
