I can't help but notice this character is very popular and often paired with Mello. Really, I don't want to offend anyone, but I don't see what's so great about him. Not mention he only shows up in the series for like three minutes and thengets shot to death.

What are your thoughts?

*offended* Matt is awesome! i cant believe he just got shot like that and just........died. i still love Matt though. i think hes pretty awesome i dont care if he was only there for a few minutes and i dont care if hes a sub character or what ANYONE thinks.

I just don't understand WHY he's awesome

Okay. Umm.. in the manga, he got a bigger role. xD; I was really disappointed with his appearances in the anime. And his shirt was like wtf colors. Bizarro-Matt!

Anyway, he's good-looking, and likes videogames. Who doesn't like good-looking people and videogames? 'Cuz I sure do! >.>

Plus, fangirls like to pair characters up, and Matt just happened to be there. Most people like him because he goes well with Mello. Eh. And they do make a good pairing, I suppose (but I prefer them as close friends).

Matt's just awesome. There's not really any way to deny it.

I thought he looked pretty cool and I'm sure that if his character had been built upon more he would have been charming... Bawww, yeah a friend of mine figured it was because he likes video games and smoked.

I'm still amazed by the size of his fanbase though. Oh well

I think Matt's character is one of those interesting ones you really wish you got more of, but at the same time are thankful for how little you were given. In the 13th volume they elaborate more on who he is, from his 3rd place rank in the orphanage (suggesting that not only is he a video game geek, he's incredibly smart), to his real name.
He's every slasher's dream because he's:
1) Attractive. He has an awesome character design, from his goggles to his vest to his boots.
2) Relatable. He's a geek who plays video games all the time and tells Mello very matter-of-factly when he thinks a woman is good-looking. He expresses boredom at being the watch dog all day and pouts over it. He's likable.
3) Convenient. The fact is, Matt shows up out of nowhere and appears to be the only person Mello expresses no open hostility towards. After Mello gets messed up pretty bad from the explosion, a long lapse occurs where the reader is left to fill in the holes of how Matt found out and what he did to help Mello recover. What was their relationship at the orphanage? Why was it that Mello was so bitter towards Near for their close rank, but not towards Matt who is only one rank below him? Why does Matt so readily come to help Mello when he needs him? Why does he risk his life to do it? He's a super genius; he has to know beforehand that Mello is going after Kira.

Matt is just one of those characters you can't help but love.

I agree! Though I will say (as I'm sure every Matt fan will agree), Matt did get shafted in the anime. As for liking well...it just like how some fans of Naruto like Yondaime or how some Bleach fans like Kaien (sorry to bring other anime into a Death Note forum but I needed the comparison).

I swear I don't mean to belittle him. I'm just hoping people might be able to shed some light for me. Hehe, light.

Anyhoo, I actually have only seen the anime, so maybe reading the manga will help.

I think retice has it covered. xD He just seems cool, and in the manga where he has more lines, he's the kind of person you'd love to just go out on the town with. xD The clothes he wears, the cigarette, the video games and his ( possibly questionable? xD ) relationship with Mello all make him seem cool to a lot of DN fans.
