Ok, I'm starting this list from number seven, since few people know which FF is which before then. (Japanese refused to release a few of them state-side in the past, which just messed up the numbering system.)
Anyway, my vote has to go to number VIII. All those VII fans who complained that VIII sucked in comparison, just haven't weighed the facts. VIII had better graphics, and the battle system was better than many give it credit for (junction was a good idea, when you bothered to figure out how to use it properly, you had near invincible characters. And those who complained about constantly having to Draw, never found out that besides for obtaining GFs, Draw was completely unnecessary.) It had a much better (if darker) story-line, even if Squall's character arc was sudden (but so what? It was still entertaining.) And not to mention, it has one of the most addicting mini-games out there (many online versions of triple triad were created in the past, and once had quite a large community. Shame that you can never find an opponent anymore though...)
Now, as for best FF, I would have to go with X. It was near perfect, for so many reasons. But I'm too much of an VIII fan-boy to not give it the number one spot.
Unfortunately, I have yet to play them all. Haven't played IX, heard many mixed reviews about it, but still would like to get to it. I haven't played XI, nor do I plan to (too expensive). And I haven't played XII, but I heard it wasn't great.
Anyway, those are just the direct line games, let me know if you think I should add other ones, like CC or Tactics/advance. (Advance was pretty boring. I haven't played through it completely, but if I can't even bear to get halfway through, it's not worth it.)
So yeah, discuss, and vote for favorite.
