In the dimming light of the sunset, a four-legged shadow crept through the dusk along the bottom of the palace walls, nose to the ground. Its pale yellow eyes gleamed eerily in the half-light, seeming almost to glow. Oil-black, oil-slick scales gleamed dully, rippling with the movement of the disturbingly canine-serpentine creature. Dull yellow feathers straggled stringily from its right brow; a forked tongue flickered between its jaws, brushing near to the ground before disappearing back into the viperlike head from whence it had come. The beast darted through a pool of torchlight, its scales catching the flickering light briefly before it was claimed again by the swift onset of night.

Not to far away from the torch-lite stood a guard, clad in blue and silver armor, a pole arm grasped tightly in one hand. His concentration was fixed on a rather skinny, brunette of a boy. He spoke in a husky, weathered voice. "Like i said, without the proper papers, you can not just waltz into the palace area, no matter the reason."
The boy sighed and ran a hand through his mess of hair, thinking. He gripped at the leather reins he was holding, and the brown horse behind him pawed nervously at the ground, and danced to the side, away from the torches and that general side of the wall. Skittish, and nervously glancing towards the darkness. The boy didn't seem to notice the minor freak out of the horse, more worried about how he was going to get past the guard. "Look. I swear, i was sent by the horse traders setting up at the gates just outside of town. If this has anything to do with me being Karsite, then you shouldn't be working the Palace gates. I need to get inside, to deliver this guy to the stabl-"
Now the boy paused, and looked to the side. Something had caught his eye. "What was that?"
He wasn't alone, either. The guard had tensed and was staring at the torch light as well, searching the darkness for what he had thought he'd seen. "I don't know..." He studied the boy a moment before nodding. "Stay put, boy." And the aging guard moved towards the torch light, careful in case it was some stray wild dog or something. Armor clanked as he moved, and he poked the spear head of his weapon into the darkness. "Whats there?"

Something black and scaled jumped back from the spear point, jaws gaping to bare long, hollow fangs. A hiss like one of the Artificer's steam mechanisms emerged from its throat as it started to back away, forked tongue flicking nervously. Its yellow eyes narrowed slightly, calculating...
Inside the head of the beast, something odd was going on. It was judging the reach of the guard, for one thing, and calculating how quickly the aged man could move compared to itself. Perhaps... Perhaps, if it were to wait for the guard to open the gates for that human, it could slip inside. It had understood the conversation, though it did not consciously register the knowledge. Guided by instinct, all it knew was that the bird-creature had destroyed its pack... And for that, it must pay.

Tiliff and Fanny made it back to Haven in record speed. Tiliff could almost swear that his hair was now permanently forced behind him... thanks to the dye he had used.
He looked down at the guard who had his spear drawn, totally oblivious to the danger he could have been in. "We need to pass!!" Tiliff said with far too much energy.

At the hiss, the guard drew back quickly anbd breathed a few filthy words before nudging the torch foreward a little with his foot. "What the hell?" It looked like a dog to him, but he caught a glimps of scales aswell... As far as he knew, dogs didn't have scales. "Wha'is it?"
the karsite boy, still holding the reins of his horse, watched teh guard curiously, a little more aware of how the animal beside him was acting. "Be carefull, eh?" Sure, if the stupid guard got eaten, someone would blame HIM for it, he could bet on it. Because Karsites ate people, you know.
Then, Tiliff and Fantasy tore through the streets, stopping at the gate, Tiliff ordering for it to be opened.
The guards attention wavered for a moment, and he glanced to teh companion and her rider. "Wha- Lady Companion..." He didn't know what to say. Ask for help, or not?

"In In In," Tiliff said. He didn't have the patience to be waiting for some fire/torch loving guard to finish up whatever he was doing in the corner.
(Gutter minded Tiliff ><)

In that moment of distraction, the creature slipped away into a patch of deep darkness, out of sight and eerily still. It waited, discovering in itself a patience not entirely that of a predator. It knew that waiting would get it what it wanted - and so, it did. Eyes half-lidded to conceal their gleam, the beast watched, body coiled and ready to launch the moment its passage was clear.

Tiliff waited for the guard to do something before he started to pester him again. He was surprised how fast companion's could really go, and that they had made a trip to Karse and back in only a day. It was starting to get dark out, and even though Tiliff was a thief... he was still afraid of the dark. Though he'd never admit that.

Fanny snorted at the stench of evil.
::Chosen - I sense evil here. Be careful.::

The guard backed off from teh torch, still holding his spear tightly. He didn't want to know what he'd seen, but given his position he had no choice to find it out. "I'm sorry, lady companion, and you to sir." he gave tiliff a little nod. "I don't think it would be wise to open this gate, but seeing your impatience..." he looked back to where he thought the thing was, and thne sighed, what to do?
Rhune figited along with his horse. He wasn't nervous becuase of the creature, but the apperance of the companion. He knew they weren't evil, but still, they made him so nervouse, especially this close.

Tiliff sighed, "To go and tell Cassidy and Papa that we're back we have to get through. And to get through, we have to play with the evil-thingy. So let's go and play!" It wasn't apparent if he understood what something evil was or not.
He got off of Fanny, though, and walked towards the torch. He picked it up with one hand, and then fumbled for something in his clothing. He started to walk forward, waving the torch around to try and get a glimpse of the "evil-thingy."

Rising silently into a half-crouch, the creature began to back away slowly, placing its paws carefully. Any noise would alert those two-legged beings to his presence. It flinched back as the torch waved nearer to it, the light blinding it temporarily; it let out another steam-hiss, scrambling backward as it recovered its vision.
