Is anyone else apart from me from the UK bugged by the fact that the film's title is The Golden Compass rather than Northen Lights as the book title is over here? I don't know why the title was changed for American auciences because Northern Lights is understandable enough isn't it? Does anyone have any views on this? Or is it just me? sweatdrop

I second twilightem! I hate how they keep constantly referring to it as "the golden compass" in the commercials. I'm rereading the book before the movie comes out, and the only reference to it as a compass was when the narrator first describes it as looking similar to a compass or something like that. None of the characters EVER refer to it as the golden compass. stressed
The title isn't even supposed to be referring to the alethiometer, either. I can't remember where I read this, but Pullman has originally intended to title the whole series "The Golden Compasses" from a quote from Paradise Lost (and it wasn't referring to directional compasses but to mapping compasses) instead of "His Dark Materials", but changed his mind before the first book was published. When it was gonna be published in the USA, the publishers saw that discarded title and thought it was soooo cool, so they decided to rename the first book that. rolleyes

That sounds like the type of thing they'd do, kind of like the whole 'no one understands the word philosopher, let's just call the book the sorceror's stone' thing with Harry Potter rolleyes

This irritates me too. On top of it all, in Russia they renamed the first book after the movie came out and put a movie scene on the book covers of the newest editions of The Nothern Lights stressed
Seriously, will there ever be no advertising?

The movie tin in cover version of Northern Lights in the UK has The Golden Compass on it as well, with Northern Lights at the top in really tiny writing. stressed
