I've herd a few people say not to go see the movie The golden compass, they clam It was made by a man who is Atheist, that made the movie to make people believe that god doesn't exist. I find this theory kind of dumb. I anted to Know others opinions do you believe it or are you just going to go to see it.
Please leave insults against Atheism out of this thread, I am an Atheist and I don't want to here it. K ^^

Philip Pullman has been likened to C.S. Lewis because of the His Dark Materials series. I read the first two books, and I have to say, I loved the Golden Compass. It was an awesome fantasy novel, and I really enjoyed it. And then I read the Subtle Knife, and didn't care for the direction it took. They were talking about trying to kill God and stuff like that, and it was just really, seriously weird. The religion they were practicing in the novels didn't seem like Christianity until the second half of the second book, when all the angels started talking about killing God. It was seriously creepy, and so I haven't bothered to read the third book. I don't really know a whole lot about the movie. If it's just a movie of the first book, like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings was, and they're planning on making it a trilogy to go with the books, I'll go see it. The first book was good and the movie would be interesting. But I won't see the second. And not because he's an Atheist and is trying to convince people that God doesn't exist, but because I felt that the religious symbolism that he started throwing into the book was out of place and detracted from the story. But that's my own personal opinion, and I think if anyone else wants to go see the movie, they should. It's got a good cast from what I've seen, the visual effects will probably be awesome, it could be a really good movie. But then again, I always think people who are trying to ban or boycott this movie or book because it's 'against religion' is just stupid. People aren't better off because of ignorance. We ate that apple way too long ago to try to make up for it at this point.
x_x Sorry, didn't mean to rant so much.

The trilogy isn't so much against Christianisty or religion as it is against dogmatism. In case you don't know the word (you can look it up) but essentially it is the unshaking belief that you have the one true religion and are not open to discussion.
Pullman has said a number of times he never aimed his books specifically at Christianity but that it could relate to all religions.
To me the books were more about freedom, liberty and the struggle against oppression. Organized religion has historically been the "villan" in its effort to control not only people's behavior but also the law of the land.
Look at the Spanish Inquisition. Why did England split from Rome and create its own church (don't tell me the simplistic cause - Henry wanted another bride - because it was more than that. Right or wrong Henry felt the monarch shouldn't be controlled through coersion by the church). Why did our Founding Fathers create a seperation between church and state?
Pullman is just trying to get people to think about what they believe. In my humble opinion that should be mandatory as an American. Or as Thomas Paine said "When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon."

I've never really felt that I blindly follow my religion, because I know I have several differing beliefs from doctrine. But reading the second book made me uncomfortable. I didn't really get the sense that Pullman was just trying to get you to question your beliefs, to make sure that you have a basis to believe them. It just really unnerved me the way the "angels" were behaving. There seemed to be just as much wrong with what they were planning to do as there was with God - ie, the reasons they wanted him to die.

Well he liked it. But you may not have the same taste he does. I still haven't gotten around to go seeing it myself. I'm lame and don't like to go to the movies by myself.
