disclaimer: I'm telling you how "I" do Hardflips, there are more than one technique or style of doing this trick, so experiment with my advice or even ignore it if it doesn't help.
Basically once you got Kickflips and FS Shove-Its you're ready to learn the Hardflip.
First pop a FS Shove-It. You want to have a good enough pressure on it, but not to hard cause this time you want it to get more vertical when it starts to rotate (pop it hard, but still have control of it).
Then start rolling your foot/side of your toes off of it like a Kickflip, but instead of flicking your foot you just roll it off. it should start to do the Hardflip. (you can also retract your foot/lower leg a bit, but if doing so you'll then have to flick it to get the same result.)
Tip: positioning/body form is key for this trick. Make sure when you're popping/flipping this trick that your feet are cleared away from hitting the board as its flipping. Also your body will try to rotate on you since your back leg is popping the FS Shove-It in one direction and your front will be going in the other direction to get the flip. After you pop/flip this trick, you must learn to retract you're lower body form back (using your shoulders and arms) so you will be able to land the trick or you'll continue to rotate and be out of position.
After that you just have to not be scared and catch that bad boy. Catch it with your front foot like you would for a Shove-It. Then bring back your back foot either from behind the board if it's done flipping or from the side as its finishing its flip. This is a hard trick to get at first, but after you get it flipping and you can catch it, its all good and you'll laugh at how not hard the Hardflip is.

I've had a lot of trouble with this one, I have the vertical part down good, but i can't get my junk out of the way as it comes back down, so i end up Credit-Carding myself almost every time!

Well see this is how I learned. First try to do a body varial Hardflip easiest way to do them. you`ll get the flow of them.
Regular Hardflip. Try to pop the board up like a Impossible. but flick your kick foot out just a little. Then your kick foot will go far out. Hurry up and bring your kick foot back to regular position. If you need help with the spin. Try to backside shovit with it.
