This is a brief summary on the basics of what it means to be a Libertarian. Its meant to inform anyone coming in here who doesn't already know what Libertarians are all about. Libertarians belive in or identify with the following concepts.
1: Live and let live. This means we want to live our own lives the way we want to, as long as we allow others to do the same.
2: Rejection of initiating force as a means to achieve your goals. This is perhaps the most important. Libertarians belive it is wrong to use force, either violence or laws, to achieve your goals. An example would be laws against drug use. By passing a law, you are trying to force people to give up drugs. The libertarian philosiphy rejects this concept as wrong.
3: Minimum Government. Concepts 1 and 2 gives part of the reason for this. Libertarians reject the use of laws to achieve goals. Most laws are passed as a way to restrict or prohibit something. We also tend to believe that governemt is innefficient, and that most of the duties it has taken on itself can be achieved better through the private sector. We belive Government should do nothing more than the absolute minimum required to keep us from total anarchy.
As I sated before, this is just a brief look at what it means to be a libertarian. It is not a complet guide, or even a complete summry. This is just to give the newcomer a general idea of what libertarianism is.
