Next semester, I'll be studying in Italy, and one of the classes I'll be taking is batik dying. I was just wondering if anyone else dyed their own fabric or yarn, and what methods you used. I don't know anything about it, except that batik is a method of creating wax resists in the dying process.

I haven't done it myself. *batik* but I understand the concept. You are so lucky to get to go to Italy to do it.

Yes, I am thrilled. They also offered weaving, and I thought about that, too, but I could only sign up for five classes.

Oh the weaving would have been great I bet. I have started to learn to weave when I have the chance out side of my normal classes.

I've done a little bit of weaving on lap looms, but when it got bigger than about 6"x6", I always got really bored and gave up.

I haven't had the money to buy any warp and more weft. So my weaving has been sitting on the side line.

Ah, well. I'm just looking forward to making things with the fabric I dye.

I've only dyed my own wool, and that was just Kool-Aid dying. You're so lucky to have the chance to study abroad and study crafty things. I'm jealous. (:

Yes. I am quite pleased. I'm bringing my sewing kit as well. Depending on the requirements on the course, I'm planning on turning my dyed fabric into clothing (ha! I won't have to shop and pay crazy European prices!), embellishing some of it with embroidery, and maybe cutting some into strips to knit with. ninja

My Batik class is going quite well--I'm working on my first dip-dyed project, and plotting out my design for my second silk painting. Once I get the first back from the cleaners I'll post a picture, and then another once I finish embroidering it. It's kind of scary, but I'm at least a week a head of everyone in my class, and I'm also the one with the most fiber knowlege. My teacher (a Brittish woman in her 60's) and I went off on about an hour long tirade the first day of class, ranting about how so many young people today don't even know how to sew on a button.
My current dip project is the centerpiece for the 198 Countries Peace Project. If you want more information on that, click the link in my sig.

I have finished pictures of my first silk painting on my blog (link in my sig). The center for the peace project has been dyed, and I'm now working on the embroidery.

I really like that pillow that you're making with your first batik. It's really pretty. :3

Thank you.
I recently started embroidering another project for my senior thesis show. I don't know how I'm going to get all of this stuff back to the states...some of them are huge.

If you would like to see any of the artwork I did in Italy, you can check out my devart page (I also have pictures of my handspun up there).
Since returning, I've learned to dye animal fibers with kool-aide. My next project (when funds allow) will involve ordering the dyes and tools needed to dye plant fibers and make my own batiks.
