"Oh joy, oh joy, oh joy..." The mist sentinel muttered to himself as he paced along the thick tree branch that he called his home. It was Timber, his adoptive son and his home and would remain so...or so at least Sirius hoped. The life of an apothecary was a lonely one, others only talking with you when they needed your skills, or, by the mighty redwood, some were afraid of apothecaries...feared that they would do something to them.

Today was the day though, the day when Timber finally took his first leap into the air. It was a dangerous time, especially for them. Sirius lived a ways up from the Forest Floor...a drop would be devastating and who knew what lurked down there. He did not want to find out, but he would protect his fledgling if it came down to it. The male fluffed his feathers out proudly, even when Timber was just an egg, he told himself that he would teach the youngling everything he needed to know and not send him to a Teacher...

Brown feathers fluffed up in excitement and resettled as the deep woods fledgling prepared himself for the leap that meant he would be allowed to leave the nest and follow Sirius on his trips throughout Noctura. Timber was a bundle of energy since he had started moulting baby fluff for more mature feathers. He'd waited and waited and waited till his guardian had finally deemed him mature enough to attempt flight.

Wings flapping with excitement, Timber made his way out to the ledge of their home. "I..I'm ready!!!" He called as he hopped over to Sirius with wings flapping awkwardly. "You're gonna fly with me... right?" he asked as he peeked over the ledge. Maybe this first jump wasn't such a good idea yet. >_>

The older sentinel nodded slowly, "Yes, yes, I will be flying with you this morning." He knew this would be a bad idea. Timber was still young, this flight feathers still maturing, but...it was now or never. Sirius needed to get back to work and perhaps having an extra pair of talons with him would not be so bad.

Golden eyes looked skyward, he was nervous as well. The mist knew that he was not in the best condition for flying but he could not tell his son that he would not fly with him today.

"You must let the currents take you. Use your instincts and do not overexert yourself! If you find your tired, growing tired, or unable to stay within the air, return to the nearest branch or home." With that said, Sirius went the ledge, and without must noise from his movements he was in the air.

Golden eyes watched as the flashes of black and white flew off as if it were nothing. He would be alright...right? Taking deep breathes Timber outstretched his wings letting the breeze glide through his feathers a moment before taking the leap of faith.

The exhilaration of flight filled him only a moment before he was falling... plunging down through the trees! He let out a terrified noise as his wings flailed around at an attempt to gain purchase on the wind. Like a parachute finally opening his wings caught the breeze before he made impact - he was no longer falling, but neither was he flying, more of gliding without direction. "PAPA!!!"

The white mass turned as sharply as his frame would allow and flew back towards his fledgling. "Your wings!" He screeched out, "Your wings are the key! Trust yourself and your own abilities. I know you can do it!"

Just seeing his son flying alone was enough to make the mist sentinel emotional. He had raised him since the fledgling was only an egg and now he was becoming his own person! But this...this was reason why Sirius did not become a Teacher...

Timber floated over to a branch and hooked his talons into the wood. His whole being was shaking with fear from the uncontrolled plunge. "I... I don't want to fall again!" He cried out as his eyes scanned the air for his father. Why couldn't he just fly like his father with the ease of the air. The thought of jumping off again to try was beyond his reasoning, and how his father had done so in the first place was a mystery to the fledgling.

"Papa, I wanna go home." ;~;

Sirius looked over the branches for his song and spotted him clinging to one for dear life, shaking. He tilted towards it, and landed with a soft thud onto the branch beside Timber. "That was good for your first time!" He said cheerfully, praising his first attempt. "I didn't get it my first time either, in fact...I nearly fell to the Forest Floor. You did a much finer job then me! I'm sure you'll be the finest flyer in these woods in no time." Though it wasn't much of a lie, but it was slightly. True that he didn't do well his first time, but it was a lie that he nearly fell to the Forest Floor.

"Do you want to call it quits or do you want to be able to fly with papa on his journeys and not be stuck home alone?"

The fledgling watched his papa with big eyes. He felt uncertain about trying again, but if he didn't then he couldn't go with Sirius! "I'll..I..I'll try it again." He stammered as he eyed the drop below them. "I wanna go with you..."

Timber left off the fact that he was still frightened even after the encouragement, but it was nice to know that his papa had fallen as well. Maybe he would become as good a flier as the older sentinel. Fear rimmed his eyes as he took a deep breathe. I gotta keep trying... otherwise I can't go with Papa.

Shifting his wings to the same position as when he had been gliding the fledgling leaped off into the air. His wings fumbled as they caught the first gust of air, but after batting the wings a few more times he found a rhythm to keeping afloat in the sky. "Lookit! Lookit! I'm not falling!!"

The moment Sirius saw Timber flying, without much of a struggle at that, something gleamed in his eyes...fear...no...admiration...perhaps...No, it was pride. He was proud that that was his son flying up there. The fledgling he had raised.

At that moment...he smiled, a true smile. "I'm proud of you Timber!" He called out to him, "I really am!" Maybe it wouldn't be that bad flying through the forest with him after all. In fact, a bit of company would be nice. Maybe go with a little Chirop or two to keep them company and help out...Who knows. He'd have to ask a breeder about it, but he knew he would get Timber something as a little present. Something...he just had to find what now.

Timber caught an updraft and flew up toward the canopy. This was so much better than falling. "Papa! Come on!!!" kept moving, and did his best to turn back towards Sirius. More than once the fledgling dropped a little in the air as he made mistakes, but that was natural.

The one thing Timber was still unsure of was how he was going to land. Flying was wonderful... but the speed at which the air move was so much faster than needed for stopping.
