Okay, all of you who care to read this compilation of my over active imagination's creations. I'll mostly be posting pieces of my vampire novel Black rose, but as with most portfolios, there will be other things thrown in from time to time. Feel free to critique my work however you'd like, even if you think it's the worst thing you've ever had the misfortune of soiling your eyes with. I ask only one thing. If you see anything that needs fixing, please let me know. I enjoy constructive comments. All stories, poems, etc. will be posted in indigo.

((This is the very beginning of Black Rose. I hope you all like it.))

Chapter 1: Odd Dreams

I climbed noiselessly under the deep red sheets of my bed, welcoming sleep as an escape from my world of incessant torment. A heavy breath spilled from my mouth as I lay my head down on the soft, feather pillow. ?What ever powers are out there, take it all away.?
It had become my ritual, since achieving the rank of freshman, to whisper that phrase to any possible deity that would listen. So far, it hadn?t worked yet. My hope for the future hung by a thread over the vast chasm created by my classmates over the years. Were it not for my stubborn disposition and strict refusal to take the cowards' way out, I likely would not have been muttering my incantation again that night. Having no one to trust can do that a person.
As I slipped between the sheets, I yanked the assortment of bracelets off of my wrists and set them on the nearby nightstand. Some were rubbery and reminded her of fan belts while others were made of plastic beads or silver. The small, shadeless lamp was extinguished by the clapping of my hands and, the second my eyelids met, I fell into a deep sleep.

When my eyes opened again, all I could make out were diluted shapes and dancing shadows. Slowly, everything came into focus once more and I found myself on the edge of a breathtakingly beautiful meadow. Multitudes of wild beasts charged across the heavenly grasslands, beckoning to me. It was so perfect. 'Surely,' I thought, 'I will not suffer there?'
I bit my tongue and kept my distance, not straying into the field of dreams. I could not go there. It had forsaken me once already and I would not willingly endure the pain of being told I did not belong in paradise again.
Squeezing my eyes shut made it easier to resist and I turned away, never thinking of what might lay at my back. When I dared to look, I stood perfectly still, gaping. Behind me laid a seemingly endless land of darkness. The full moon bathed the otherwise pitch-dark land in just enough light to see by. Bats flew by in cloud-like flocks and craggy mountains protruded malignantly from the barren Earth like broken glass. But what most caught my attention was the young man who stood not six feet behind me. Seeing him standing there serenely nearly made me jump out of my skin.
Silvery hair cascaded down over his forehead and rested wistfully on the bridge of his nose. Cold, dangerous black eyes gazed out from behind those bangs, boring a hole straight into my core.
Looking at the tall, attractive stranger sent a chill through me. Only one word could describe him: haunting? beautiful, but haunting.
"Who are you?" I demanded, voice cracking near the end from the effort exerted to regain my composure.
"Will you delve into the darkness or continue to struggle in the light? Will you join us or slowly perish among those that will never suffer your presence? Will you live by day or night? The choice is yours alone? Destroy your power by trying to belong or stray into the shadows and master it? Decide now." His deep voice was soft and mesmerizing, like the whisper of the wind. And yet, at the same time it was cool and forbidding. Merely looking at him tied my stomach in knots. Somewhere in an unused region of my brain, a voice was screaming that something about him was not right.
I resolutely swallowed my anxiousness and replied. "I?don?t want to stay in this place where no one cares about me. I hate the feeling I have that every day is just one more chance for everyone to hurt me before I die." My head hung limply on my neck. "I want to get away from here."
The dark stranger chuckled quietly. My eyes narrowed as they came up to look at him again. Was he mocking me?
"Excellent choice, Thorn. I?ll see you again." He turned his back to me and began sauntering off into the darkness. Then, suddenly, he stopped and looked back over his shoulder. "By the way? Happy birthday."

The alarm clock chimed obnoxiously as it assaulted my ears with a particularly loud rap song.
"Ah! It burns!" I muttered groggily as I searched the floor for my baseball bat.
No, I had never played baseball before I my life. I hated sports. However, my list of hobbies included beating my alarm clock into silence every morning. At last, my fingertips met the smooth, wooden handle of the bat.
Lazily, I picked it up and brought it crashing down on the source of my irritation. Shards of plastic soared everywhere. A disgruntled groan echoed up the stairs, alerting me to the oncoming lecture about how expensive clock radios were. After yawning widely and tucking my head in to avoid hitting my nightstand, I rolled to the right and tumbled out of bed, onto the hardwood floor. I forced my fatigued body to sit up and my bleary gaze fell on the calendar. Every day had been scribbled out by a vibrant, red marker up to Friday October 13th.
'Hmm. Happy seventeenth birthday to me,' I thought bitterly, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
Happy birthday?
