Do any of you find it frustrating and sometimes deflating when trying to talk to friends who aren't as into science, math or whatnot as you are? Do you find that they cut you off and shut you down?

Anyone have any ideas why that would be?

I've occasionally had trouble with people thinking I'm showing off, rather than just being interested.

When I talk about viruses, people tend to be pretty interested. When I talk about techniques and experiments..people get bored.

When I reflect on evolution and crystal diffraction, people are interested. When I talk about purifying macromolecules..people get bored.

I try not to bore people

LOL You can talk about all of that stuff to your hearts content here germanicus2.

@Bookwyrme: I have run into that problem quite often myself. For some reason when I'm trying to share something that is exciting to me, people think I'm showing off.

Hello,
Yes, it annoys me very much. I don't talk much anymore, because that my friends will literally just walk away or talk to someone else when I'm in mid sentence if I go on too long. It really bugs me whenever I'm talking about poletics. So I usually say: "If you aren't completely enraged, then you aren't paying attention."

lol I guess it's just what interests them. Biology is cool though.

I have had that problem in the past. someone will say "hey look at the lizard" and I have to specify what type of anolis it is and explain the behavior. Some people think it's interesting, most role their eyes and walk away. I've found that now I can only give a few facts and tidbits here and there in order to remain interesting. But I don't care all that much really, so the efforts now are wasted.

I have a problem with ... (fellow) medicine students.
here's why:
most of them just close themselves to med school and its teachings. history, philosophy, sociology? who cares! I'm in med school and thus studying the hardest major there is and thus don't need to know anything other than medicine-related things, durrr!
and it's sooo much more than that.
main problem with doctors today.
buuuut that's just me.
I have a problem with people that limit their knowledge to one area :/

Friends?

whats that ninja

naw I do have a few friends now but not many and I didn't get my first friend until I was 17.

That being said my small pool of friends seem to be interested in similar things and when they are not they know I'm not trying to be aloof.

I am pretty lucky in the fact that I work with a lot of other scientists at a butterfly farm so we love science chatter...

I have that problem too, especially, for some reason, when it's people I know for a fact are highly intelligent. The idea that they're studying the hardest major there is is debatable, I'm sure a physicist would disagree with them. Sure they're going to have life and death in their hands but as for the knowledge...there are several majors I can think of right off the top of my head that are just as demanding. Some of which also have life or death consequences, engineering as an example.

That brings us to the idea that there is so much knowledge out there that there is no way a single human being can gain it all in a single lifetime. Which is a whole 'nother thread.

I've found that the ones that don't roll their eyes or walk away when I talk science usually turn out to be really good friends. Not only are they showing that you and they have something in common, most people who are interested in science usually also have a similar outlook on life as I do.

When I was in college and grad school, I ran into a lot of people with the outlook that they didn't need to learn about other disciplines. It's very sad to see how many people limit themselves with thought like that. Understanding basic psychology and sociology teaches a doctor how to interact with people, to make them cooperate or make their treatment easier on them. Philosophy teaches logic (among other things), which is needed for medical research and diagnosis.

Maybe this is why there are so many doctors with terrible bedside manners and so many who do their jobs only to the very minimum level.

I tend to lose people when I start talking about some of the stuff I'm morst interested in (a.k.a. the stuff I learn about for fun/know the most about)...stuff like microbiology (specifically proteins XD) and Hyperstring Theory (a.k.a. "String Theory" XP)...

The ones that end up being okay/good friends are:
1. the ones who get what you're saying for the most part, and can hold up their end of a scientific conversation (>1% of the population of my school)
2. the ones who try to follow you, and let you know when they get lost; you mostly explain stuff to them (1-2% " " " " " ")
3. band geeks (GO MARCHING BAND!!!)(5-7% " " " " " ")

The ones that aren't so good (unless you are also a serious gamer XP (I'm an on-and-off gamer)) are the ones who don't give a hoot, no matter whether or not they tell you (you catch them zoning, ask what you just said, and they can't tell you at all/say "You think I care?" etc.)

My sister, bless her heart, has rarely understood me but she has always listened. We joke that she got the looks and I got the brains, which seems odd since we're twins but she's far more socially adept than I am and not so much into higher learning, whereas I'm rather socially inept but very interested in higher learning.
