For generations, the members of the Mikage family have had powers over either light or darkness. When a member of the Mikage family reaches the age of ten, their powers will show themselves by changing the appearance of the child, from white hair and eyes to blonde hair and blue eyes for those who will have power over light, or to purple hair and eyes for those who will have power over darkness. One who has power over light is weakened while in darkness, and one who has power over darkness is weakened in light.
The powers come from spirits known as Reikons, which have been bonded with the members of the Mikage family for centuries. Hi-Reikons, which are spirits of light, give power of light while Shado-Reikons, spirits of darkness, give power over darkness. The Reikons can control their hosts on occasion, and they will die if their host is killed.
Both light and dark powers include the same basic abilities. Phasing, which is similar to teleporting, is one of the basic powers. It can allow its user to vanish for either a fraction of a second or as long as the user wishes as long as the darkness or light the user phased into still exists. If the darkness or light is gone, the user is forced to reform, which has adverse effects on their bodies and could potentially kill them.
The recent history of the Mikage family has been tragic. Kurei Mikage's father, Hatai Mikage, was murdered by his brother (Kurei's uncle), Genkou Mikage. Genkou, in shock after killing his brother, killed himself after telling Keiko Mikage (Kurei and Reika's mother), Kurei, and Reika what he had done. Genkou's son, Ryoku, swore to his mother, Kyoko, that he would kill Keiko, Kurei, and Reika, since they did nothing to try to save Genkou. He could not kill Keiko, however, since she died shortly afterward due to illness.
Kurei has had to raise Reika, and he followed in his father's footsteps and became a bounty hunter in order to earn enough money to care for her as well as he could. As a bounty hunter, he commonly went by the alias "Nightshade". When returning home after tracking a dangerous criminal down, he discovered that Reika had been kidnapped by the Shogun's men. There was blood all over the place, and he suspected that his sister had been killed. He formed the Yami shortly afterwards, intending to get revenge for what was done to his sister. He doesn't know that Ryoku exists, since Genkou kept his marriage to Kyoko a secret from the rest of the family, and Ryoku is hunting him down.
Ryoku had a much more tragic past than Kurei and Reika. He had decided to give up on trying to kill Kurei and Reika, but his Hi-Reikon changed his decision by making him kill his lover.

Personality: Kurei is pretty much the emo-kid of the Mikage family, though he is the one who has had the most responsibility dumped on his back. He has a tendency to brood a lot. He doesn't anger quickly, though he will usually end up doing something that he really didn't mean to when he does get angry enough to act on it. He is intelligent and doesn't like having to kill others, preferring to find a better way. He is willing to give almost anyone the benefit of the doubt, even if the person seems entirely evil. The exception to his leniency is, of course, the Shogun, who he wants to see dead at any cost, even his own life.

She is bubbly and hyper, but will get instantly serious as soon as she is involved in a fight. She will do whatever she can to protect the Shogun, who she always refers to as "aniki", and she sees him as almost like a father to her. She is very informal in the way she speaks, and loves to show off her powers whenever she has accomplished something new with them. She thinks that Kurei doesn't care about her, and she wishes to kill him in order to protect the Shogun, but also to get revenge on him for abandoning her.

Personality: Ryoku is the most reserved one of the Mikage family. He barely shows any emotion other than the occasional bit of anger, and he normally acts like the perfect gentleman. All-in-all, he's a bit of a sociopath. Unless you managed to get onto his almost nonexistant list of friends, he doesn't care if he kills you. He doesn't like to draw attention to himself though, so he is relatively safe to be around when surrounded by innocent bystanders. His past is the reason for his current cruel state, and he is constantly trying to keep himself from making the same mistakes that he did in the past that caused him to be the way he now is. Falling in love, for instance. He is determined to never make that mistake again.
