I own it but I have yet to watch it. *was very busy recently*
But here are two different plot summaries for the film.
A Russian peasant emigrates to America, with a promise to send for his mother and young daughter when he is settled. His daughter follows shortly after, but she ends up on a ship bound for England, where she is renamed Suzie and raised by a British family. Many years later, Suzie's talent for singing and dancing sees her accepted into a Paris dance troupe where she befriends Lola, a fellow dancer from Moscow; Dante, an egotistical tenor and Cesar, a handsome brooding gypsy. All is well until the Nazis march into Paris, and Suzie's Russian Jewish background places her in danger. She must decide whether to leave Cezar and her friends and continue the search for her father in America.
A young girl and her loving father (Oleg Yankovsky) are separated when he goes to America, intending to send for her. Shortly after his departure, their village goes up in flames, and the girl is forced to go to England, where she takes on the name Suzie, and finds that although she is misunderstood, tormented, and teased, she has one gift: she can sing. The movie follows Suzie (Christina Ricci) through the events of her early life, from when she moves to Paris and joins a dancing troupe, to when she meets flirt and showgirl Lola (Cate Blanchett), to when she falls in love with the gypsy Cesar (Johnny Depp). In the chaos and mayhem of the beginning of a World War, we witness Suzie's struggle as she is forced to decide between the love of her past to the new love that she has only just discovered.
I hope that helped.

I only saw it once, and I found it to be great because it was a complex story with deep characters. I loved how it opened up Johnny's acting roles, especially after his more mainstream roles in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ed Wood, and Sleepy Hollow. I enjoy seeing him open up his range.

I didn't like the ending, but overall it was worth watching.
Of course, Johnny was not the lead in any manner, which was refreshing, because Christina Ricci got to shine. She really is a brilliant actress.
The entire cast was great.
There are some..*cough* awkward scenes. But for maybe 20 seconds altogether. Not at all like The Libertine.
This movie made me want to be a gypsy. No joke. XD Being free..and...mysterious! That was definately Johnny's character.
