I'm dragging this out of the LOA thread and into here.
BFU
To be entirely honest with you all, I really don't know if the post setting is going to make an RP. From what she has told me, Naakkyuu is on indefinite hiatus and that setting was her thing. I never got to see anything other than our chars so the story has a very stark opening. I wasn't able to take it any further than what might consist of 3-4 ST posts. Unless Naakkyuu comes back, the new setting will most likely be put back up for a vote.
I had sent the following in a PM to BFU because I couldn't post due to a database hiccup... but now that it's fixed, I'll copy it here for you all, and add a little to it.
Phoenix
Anyways, as to what you posted about the setting. I have some ideas, obviously coming from my several years of play at Hawthorne. Now, Hawthorne is completely different, because it was like a chat room... where we'd see who was on and who wanted to play, grab one of our C's and toss them together and see what happened. We played multiple Cs because we never knew who would be on. Anyways... There was a setting there which one of my friends and I created, and I could bring it back into play here with little trouble. I'd have to tweak it a bit because it was a bar/dance club/strip club... but I could just lose the last part of that or make it into a kind of diner area.
I'd be willing to work with you guys on settings.. building up descriptions of places and small maps. Hawthorne was set in Salem, but I can pull the club anywhere you place play.
The main thing I've learned in RPing is that you need to have places people feel comfortable RPing in... In other words, if half the group here has never seen the inside of a bar, they more than likely won't feel 100% comfortable posting to that setting. It's easy to post things that you understand... I'd wager just about everyone here has been inside a school or library or fast food joint, so you wouldn't have a problem imagining that layout.. the decor, the sights, sounds, and smells... everything you'd need to lay things down for a post. The same can be said of a larger setting.. if you've never spent the night out in the forest, it's going to be hard (but not impossible) to get the feeling for a post.
So if we do scrap the current setting, or even if we don't, I would suggest maybe having everyone help out with things. Here's some ideas...
Look up the location on Mapquest, or Google map.... take a screen schot and post the screencap here for people to look at. Everyone can visit one of those sites, and browse the map, getting a feel for the layout. I suggest Google map mostly, because you can zoom in fairly close on the streets, and in many areas, you can switch to satelite view and see the houses... (I looked up my last apartment complex.. that was a trip)... the satelite images are a bit outdated, but it gives you some ideas for things.
Have several people host smaller settings. At Hawthorne, we had someone who ran a bed and breakfast... myself and a friend ran the club, three other players hosted a college with dorms and events, and the room hosts hosted the Manor, which held events like the Valentine Ball and Halloween Haunt. There were also mini places like coffee shops, libraries, new age stores and things of the like which were used for meeting areas, and which changed hands often.
Have players help with descriptions and maybe even images. >_> I'm a graphics type person.. so I like to see things. WE had pages devoted to different places with setting descriptions and even photographs. I'm sure people could go to one of their favorite places and snap some pics, upload them and use them as settings. So what if it's a library in New York, if it looks like a bed and breakfast in Las Vegas? That creepy house down the block might make a good photo of a Shadow Dancer hideout. If players get involved in creating the settings, by supplying photos or descriptions, it seems they get involved more and want to do more, because now they are more in control of some things.
It just seems to me like mabe we're all waiting for someone else to do everything... for someone else to post settings, post the first more, to tell us to get involved. And while the GM is technically in control, I think we really might have a little more freedom to just start stuff than most realize.
That said... I've got to wet-vac the old place tomorrow, and then I'm finished with it, and can start unpacking boxes. The first thing I'm hunting out into the open is my box with all my W:tA stuff, so I can update the Gurahl and Litany pages, and maybe add in some other things around the guild.
I'm going to guess by the lack of "don't do it" that my idea for sample posts is okay, so I'll add that thread tonight and toss in some samples of my posts for you guys to read. I hope everyone who likes that willdo the same.
I also added a few pictures to the Changing Breeds *whistles*. I would have added the one for Bastet, but I need to photoshop it for content and I still don't have photoshop up and running.
