This Roleplay is related vaguely to the canon of Dumas' works. Set between The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. King Louis XIII has just died, leaving a child of five years as an heir. Cardinal Mazarin is effectively ruling France at this point of time, during the regency of the Queen Mother, Anne of Austria. And of course there is trouble in the French courts. None but a few know about the twin princes, so Philippe will be allowed to pass into oblivion for a time, whilst we focus on the dynamics of the court and those great men who rule the nation of France during this middle part of the 17th Century.

His Eminence the Cardinal, his Most Christian (and prepubescent) Majesty Louis XIV, and those other gentlemen and ladies of the court who do their Manoeuvring and scheming behind the scenes.

    The plot is just that. There is always intrigue, and treachery is rearing it's head within Louis' court, but none knows who is responsible or just what they've got planned. There are whispers, there is always gossip, but no one can place a finger on a culprit. ...As of yet.

    We thought it would be fun to leave the plot open and request a few specific character types, for maximum intrigue and conflict, but let you all develop the plot as you and your characters see fit. It could go anywhere, but it should be interesting to see what happens when we throw these characters together.

Will there be romance, treason, assassinations? Will the twin prince be discovered? Will you reach the top of the social ladder? Will you one day rule? Anything is possible with strength of will.

  1. Literacy - Is important in any Advanced RP. If I need to define literate for you, or spell out my expectations, then you're probably not confident enough in your abilities to be joining an Advanced roleplay.

    ::However, if you are fairly certain that you will be able to 'keep up', for all intents and purposes, with the rest of us -by all means, send me an application.

  2. Grammar and Orthography - Will not be perfect. I will not delude myself, or anyone else, by insisting otherwise. This does not mean that you oughtn't to try.

    ::Spell-check
    : razz roof-read

    And it's true, I prefer quality to quantity but I'm going to quote a friend here, who summed it up rather nicely:

    The better half of advanced is having the ability to use a lot of detail in one's post without going overboard. Spend a few extra words here and there on certain things, but do not go into excruciating detail. Posts should be both interesting and as well written as possible.
    ::I do not believe in minimums or maximums in an Advanced RP. If you're advanced, you know how much is required to continue to story, to make an interesting post, and to give your fellows something to reply to. This doesn't mean you'll get away with crapy short-a** posts, but I won't demand eight paragraphs either. Don't make me change my mind on this point.

  3. Dedication - I cannot force you to stay in an RP that has lost your interest. I cannot force you to post when you are busy. But I beg of you, if you have become bored with one of my RPs, or if you are going to be away for a period of time which might delay posting, please PM me or post a note in the OOC thread. It's always good to warn your co-RPers.

    ::Nothing kills a good RP faster than neglect. This includes procrastination.

  4. Guidelines - Follow Gaia's PG-13 guildlines as well as the ToS. Godmodding is forbidden unless previously worked out between both players involved.

    ::Romance, Violence, Fighting, Cursing, Gore - all of these things are allowed, within reason. Keep in mind, this is the 1600's; certain words that exist now might not have existed then.

    ::This is a historical RP. No magic, no cars. Try to be as accurate as possible. If that means taking ten minutes to research before posting, please do so.

  5. Posting - Medium to dark colors are allowed, as well as formatting; but avoid excess.

    : razz lease use fonts between 9 and 11pt, for the sake of my eyes.

  6. Other - May be added at a later point.

User ImageTo apply: Fill out this profile form and PM it to me. I'm looking for content.
A single small paragraph for things like personality and history will not suffice. I need to know that you have a firm grasp on your character.

Those who include an RP sample will receive higher regard and a more rapid reply.

Please be sure that you can dedicate yourself to this RP before applying. Dedication is extremely important. It should not be too grueling or demanding, but be ready and willing to post when it's your turn, please.

A few characters we're looking for:
  • 'Ambitious Noble' - Should be less than honourable, perhaps a backstabber
  • 'Gossiping Lady' - Perhaps a generic nobleman's wife, or daughter who spreads a little too much gossip and a few too many lies to be good for her health.
  • 'Socially Climbing Cortesan' - Do I really need to explain this one?
  • 'Honourable lord' - A man with strong beliefs and dedication to the king, or to France (not necessarily the same thing) He may even lead a sort of investigation to discover those who're less than loyal.
  • 'Disloyal courtiers'
  • 'Musketeers'
  • 'Nobles'
  • 'Others'
  • 'King?'
  • 'Cardinal?'
  • 'Canon chars?'
  • 'Hugenots?'
  • 'Anything else that appeals to you'
If any of these char types appeal to you, let me know and we'll try to work something out.

User ImageAramis

The Basics
Character type?:: Canon
Monsieur, Madame, Mademoiselle:: Monsieur
Prénom/nom de baptême :: René
Nom de famille:: d'Herblay
I prefer to be called:: L'abbé d'Herblay, Chevalier d'Herblay, Aramis, Monseigneur
Title/Rank/Position/Profession:: Abbé
Âge:: One and forty
Je suis né(e) de:: (I hail from.../Place of birth ) To be added later.
J'habite à:: Noisy-le-Sec - Eastern Suburbs of Paris

Appearance/Possessions
Hair colour/texture:: Dark and thick.
Eye colour:: Dark brown.
Complexion:: Pale (downy) but with some colour (rosiness) to his cheeks.
Height:: Approximately five foot and a half.
Weight:: Aramis is described as stout, but this does not imply that he is overweight, but simply of moderate height and sturdy.
General/Additional appearance:: The best description I can give is a quote from The Three Musketeers "He was a stout man, of about two- or three-and-twenty, with an open, ingenuous countenance, a black, mild eye, and cheeks rosy and downy as an autumn peach. His delicate mustache marked a perfectly straight line upon his upper lip; he appeared to dread to lower his hands lest their veins should swell, and he pinched the tips of his ears from time to time to preserve their delicate pink transparency. Habitually he spoke little and slowly, bowed frequently, laughed without noise, showing his teeth, which were fine and of which, as the rest of his person, he appeared to take great care."
Style of dress:: Aramis, being an Abbé wears a cassock predominantly. This garment is a long, close-fitting, ankle-length robe; generally black. It may be noted, however, that Aramis still wears the boots of a soldier.
Always carrying/Meaningful to me:: He is always wearing a cross or some symbol of his order, though he has many possessions of importance to him. His sword, which receives far less use than it did in days gone by. His bible, books of verse, the pen, and a mistress.
Otherwise of note:: Will add when I think of something.

You Ought to Know (Please be detailed with each of these)
History:: To be added later.
Personality:: "Aramis loves intrigues and women, which fits well with the opinions of the time regarding Jesuits and abbots (before the French Revolution, abbots benefited from the incomes of an abbey, but were not required to follow the monastery rules — which Aramis understands well). As a musketeer, his great ambition was to become an abbé; as an abbé he wishes for the life of the soldier. Aramis seems to be followed by luck, but it is never enough; every step forward must be used to climb to even greater power.

Despite being even more macchiavellian then Milady was herself, Aramis holds very firmly to the sacred concept of friendship. In fact, the only wrong moves Aramis has ever made were done when he refused to harm a friend (or a friend's feelings)"

"As to Aramis, he never played. He was the worst Musketeer and the most unconvivial companion imaginable. He had always something or other to do. Sometimes in the midst of dinner, when everyone, under the attraction of wine and in the warmth of conversation, believed they had two or three hours longer to enjoy themselves at table, Aramis looked at his watch, arose with a bland smile, and took leave of the company, to go, as he said, to consult a casuist with whom he had an appointment. At other times he would return home to write a treatise, and requested his friends not to disturb him."

Aramis is overly concerned with appearances; a trait unbecoming of a clergyman. He is somewhat foppish, as well as ambitious.
And while he's often denied keeping mistresses, the fact remains that he'd sorely regret not having one. However, he does write poetry and studies theology for the enjoyment of it, as well as the benefits.

"Aramis, though having the air of having nothing secret about him, he was a young fellow made up of mysteries, answering little to questions put to him about others."

Aramis is reluctant to speak of his past or personal life. He's also hesitant to speak of his friends unless permitted to do so. In fact, he speaks but little. Always there for a friend, he can be counted on for support or defense, but don't depend on openness when it comes to his own personal matters. Despite his possition in the church, Aramis retains a bit of a temper and is not a man to be crossed. Still, to this day, he is quiet and well spoken, civil and even polite, and generous with his praise or flattery when deserved.

While his loyalty is hard to doubt, it's certain that he's got a hand in most of what's happening in Paris. If only the king knew what was to come.
Hobbies/Special talents or abilities:: (Things your character enjoys or is good at) Writing verses, treatise, translations, and sermons. He's also a fair hand at wooing ladies, flattery, and deception (only for a good cause, of course).
Quirks/Flaws:: His preoccupation with his looks might count. As would his discontentment with the course of his life. He always wants what he does not have. The Cassock or the garb of a musketeer. And of course there's his ambition and hunger for still higher rank.
Religious leanings:: Being an Abbé, we will keep this brief for now. Aramis is a devout Catholic. That is not to be questioned.
I feel strongly about/My dreams:: To be a Bishop, a Cardinal, the Pope? As much as he can achieve.
I love:: Wouldn't you like to know?
Anything additional:: Too be added later.

Five words to describe me:: Macchiavellian, dedicated, foppish, mysterious, elloquent.

Played by:: Ffamran Mid Bunansa
