No one else seems to have done it yet, so I figured I'd start off the obligatory favorites thread here. Feel free to list your favorite genre, individual games, and/or characters.

But, aside from the listings, I'd also like to see a bit of discussion going on, so if you can, try to add something more than just what you like, like why you like it.

Favorite Genres: RPG, Puzzle, Word, Platformer.
Favorite Games: Legend of Mana, Puzzle Quest, Amazing Island, The original Mega Man series, Kirby Super Star, Custom Robo Arena, Pokemon, Bookworm Adventures, The Sims 2, Diablo II.
Favorite Characters: Wario, Waluigi, Happy Mask Salesman, Nack the Weasel, Rouge the Bat, Frog (From Chrono Trigger), Dr. Wily, Dr. Eggman.

I prize RPG's above pretty much all else. I love being able to sit and strategize before I do anything, and the way you play is usually much more customizable. I'd say thats what I like most in a game, being able to customize things and make it my own. Two games which serve to customize above and beyond the call of duty are Legend of Mana and Amazing Island.

Amazing Island has a function which allows you to actually draw creatures, add myriad textures to them, then add accessories such as horns, claws, and light fixtures, and then use them to play different minigames. It was made mostly for younger children, so the actual game play is somewhat simple, but creating new monster after monster is great fun.

The Legend of Mana was an excellent PS1 title which got a lot less hype than the other titles in the series for some reason. The game itself was somewhat easy the first time around, but after beating the game harder modes can be unlocked.

In this RPG you could choose quite a number of different kinds of weapons to fight with, each varying in fighting style. Each would teach you different skills to use as well, and those skills would teach you more advanced ones in turn. You could make your own equipment, and even your own sidekick, with a complex forging system. Even the story and world were different depending on your actions.

Both were great games that didn't get much attention, and I could probably waste years of my life with just messing around with the customizable bits.

Thought or Strategy games, mostly.

Myst (I've played one through four out of five). They're very thought-oriented, full of devilish puzzles. The characters are pretty interesting. Saavedro, Atrus, and Gehn are by far the coolest. Atrus, the guide who's never there (he leaves journals), but the only person one can theoretically trust. Saavedro, the only villain with a tragic past that I think works (probably because it's relatively recent tragic past, not from childhood). Gehn, the just plain mad villain who at least is straightforward about being evil. I love it because, one, the backgrounds are the prettiest damn things ever, and two, the characters are played by actors instead of being CGIed. That helps with the realism.

Lode Runner: The Legend Returns. You play Jake Peril, who's getting gold from evil monks. It sounds simple, but some of the levels take quite a bit of though (Level 149: Jake's Peril was murder). It's 13 years old, though. I still love it. It's a smart little game.

Age of Mythology. It's fun to destroy your enemies with mythological creatures. Also, the campaign isn't half-bad. I love it because I can pretend my enemies in the game are people I'm mad at and then I can mercilessly rampage them. It's sweet like that.

Favourite Genres: RPGs, Beat-'em-ups, FPSs.
Favourite Games: Advance Wars series, Zelda series, Timesplitters series, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Street Fighter series, Streets of Rage (Bare Knuckle to America), Guilty Gear series, Smash Bro.s series.
Favourite Characters: Zelda, Toad, Yoshi, Sami (AdWars), Koopa Troopas, Bridget, Samus, Chun Li.

I'm a total ******** Chun Li fanboy, it's awful. It's her sexy fat thighs. I want her to kick me D:

I'm also partial to a bit of Soul Blade. Soul Caliber, not so much. I prefer to keep it old skool razz

Advance Wars is one of those games that never gets old. I have to say that it probably is my favourite game ever: it crosses genres and makes me interested in strategy, something I've never really been into before.

For the arcade, I'm a big fan of racing games, especially ones that you can sit down in. I love being able to do power slides around corners at 150+ mph, especially since I know that I will never be able to do this on a real street with a real car. Personal favorite racing game, Outrunners. Put the 'radio' onto Splash Wave, having the bass thump into my back... ahh, good fun.

On my PC, I find myself terribly addicted to Civilization IV. So many ways to play that game and still win, yet I find myself enjoying the exploration and building part the most... quite often I will quit a game once I get to a point where I know I will win, because it's much more fun when things are in doubt. Also, for reasons I don't fully understand, I love The One City Challenge mode of playing.

And on my PS2, RPGs dominate, with only the Gran Turismos breaking up the monotony of sword and sorcery titles. LOVE the Final Fantasy titles, although it seems that past number 9, they all just leave me flat. Don't know why, and I don't think it's some sort of 'old school' elistist crap either. At least, I hop enot.
