I just watched the whole Pride and Prejudice mini-series, and came to the conclusion that Mr. Bennet has to be my absolute favourite minor character. He's so funny, and he has the best quote ever:
"Your mother will never see you again if you don't marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do."
I'd like Mrs. Bennet more if she didn't remind me of my most hated English teacher. XD.

So tell me, who is your favourite minor character in all of Jane Austen's novels? Likewise, who is your least favourite? (Lucy Steele, if you can call her a minor character, hands down).

That's my favourite quote too!
I think Mr Bennet would be my fave minor character. I'm trying to think of any others. I do like Mr and Mrs Allen from Northanger Abbey. They do make a good couple.

My least liked.... Anne Elliot's sisters. One (Mary) is having pretend fits and has no idea how to be a decent parent, and the other (Elizabeth?) seems to be content spending her Daddy's money...oops, he doesn't have any anymore.

Hmm.. supporting characters?

First, my absolute LEAST favorite would be Mrs. Elton. I hate that woman.

Okay, as to my favorite, I think I'll have to say..... *thinks* The Gardiners in P&P. They're so nice.. I would love to have an Aunt and Uncle like that. I can't say Mr. Bennett, because I place a lot of blame on him for the way Lydia turned out.

I've always been rather fond of Sir John Middleton. He struck me as a very genuine character, generous and lively. And I feel bad for him for having a wife like Lady Middleton. How he managed to stay so sturdy is beyond my understanding.

I like that Mr. Bennet quote as well, but I've always been a bit suspicious of his character. He's somewhat, though not completely, an absentee father as far as his role as the head of family would have gone in their Victorian society. He saw his daughters and his daughters saw him, but he didn't take a great deal of interest until things suddenly weren't going the way he wanted. If his property was going to go to Collins and he'd leave children and a wife without a home, he should have been taking some responsibility as far as seeing that the Bennet daughters met reasonable men. I don't exactly blame him for Lydia though. I saw that as Mrs. Bennet letting her daughter run a little wild.

But he's not my least favorite character. I'm not sure who is. I've got fairly major character dislikes, but none of the supporting characters really strike me as irritating. Except for perhaps Miss Bingley and Mrs Hurst. Gossipy, snobby witches.

I like the Gardiners, too, Flixie! Mrs. Gardiner is so cool; she reminds me of my aunts.

I do think Mr. Bennet was a little ... absent, I suppose is the right word ... in his family. It seemed like he would just go and hide in his library and only came out to eat and talk to Lizzy.

Anyway, my least favorite minor character (and I can't believe no one has said this yet!) is Mr. Collins! He's creepy and rude and boring, and I don't like him one bit.

Funny you say Mr. Collins. He's never exactly been my favorite, but I've never minded him as a character. He doesn't strike me as rude so much as socially retarded, the way he doesn't understand the faux pas he makes. neutral And really naive if he's so easily led. I suppose he can't help but be a little boring. Not everyone is lucky enough to be fascinating. smile

Yay! Another least favorite Mrs. Elton! razz

I suppose Ms. Austen had to create a REALLY evil character in Emma though, so we'd root for Emma more.

Well I don't know if it's just me or not but I always saw Mrs. Elton as being Emma minus the reform at the end of the novel?

For me, its a tie between Margret Dashwood and Mr.Collins!( I know right?)

Margret makes me smile and Mr. Collins makes me laugh...really hard.

Oh yeah, Margaret Dashwood's a sweetie.

I'm kinda shocked that you would put them on the same level. I see Mrs. Elton as having nothing but pure spite for Emma and Harriet, while I think Emma at least has good intentions... she just acts before she thinks sometimes.
