My class is reading 1984, and someone said that only a Satanist could set up the government that is in the story. His reasoning was that no Christian would torture people and atheist don't want to hurt people, but Satanist have no problem doing either. But isn't Satanism about freedom and doing what you think is right? Is there a different sect that seeks to control the world by any means?

No, it only proves that the person who muttered that was an idiot. A typical unknowning xian most likely. Satanists do not all think the same. That's all.

I would have pointed out that Hitler was an atheist, and that atheism is not a religion.

I would have, but I keep getting hit in the nose, so I'm avoiding any behavior that would result in that. Although if it hurts a little more, I might be able to get painkillers for it that won't make me sick. I should have mentioned the
Spanish Inquisition.

Yes, albeit publicly he invoked God; his private conversations are quite clear that he had no use for mythology -- beit Pagan, or Christian, except to use for his own benefit.

And, there are always the communist leaders, who too were atheists and "hurt" quite a few people.
