Your first time? Well...frack...that's pretty damned impressive! eek
The only thing to watch out for is the lips, I'd say. Try to avoid sharp outlines, and let the shadows and highlights do the work, kinda like the original artist did. In realism, the sharp outlines will tend to make the lips look like they...well...don't belong there, y'know? So it'll tend to warp the face all on it's own by constantly dragging the viewer's eye back to the mouth, even when they're looking at something else in the frame.

Well done, although I find it odd that you chose to look at a semi realistic piece instead of an actual human being and stylizing that. I like it, but seeing the reference I can't help but notice that you haven't captured the character. Was that the intent? I only ask because if not it should be a serious focus of study for an artist breaching realism.
