Kevin Kline .... George Monroe Kristin Scott Thomas .... Robin Kimball Hayden Christensen .... Sam Monroe Jena Malone .... Alyssa Beck imdb Plot Outline: When a man is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he takes custody of his misanthropic teenage son, for whom quality time means getting high, engaging in small-time prostitution, and avoiding his father. Sam Monroe (Hayden Christensen) is a 'neo-goth', doing drugs, weed etc. He works for Josh as a prostitute unwillingly ( gonk ). Forced to live with his father for the summer holidays without drugs, alcohol, etcetc. He slowly becomes more appreciative of his father and less rebelious. He falls in love with the girl next door and conquers his previous addictions and renews his morals and brings his family back together before his father dies of cancer. Random Trivia: Hayden Christensen broke his hand while filming this movie. He says he was ashamed that he cried. Sam Monroe Quotes: - Thank you for talking about me behind my back - that'll be useful in court.- I think there has to be a door between where you cook and where you crap. Even in the bush - tribal people, you know, they have a place for both. Probably it's like a law. God! It's probably in the Bible. It's at least a building code violation. -Alyssa: Look, I thought I was helping you. Sam: It would help me if I could kiss you. Alyssa: No. Look I thought we were just friends. Sam: Well, what you think you know doesn't necessarily have much to do with reality. I mean I hope I'm not the first one to tell you this. -George: Take that thumbtack out of your chin. Sam: Why? George: It bugs me! Sam: You snore at night. That really bugs me. Can I take you out?-Sam: So what were you trying to do? Trying to get me to like you? George: No, Sam, I wasn't trying to get you to like me. I was trying to get you to love me. Sam: Well, congratulations, you f***ing pulled it off!-Sam: How do you become something you're not? George: What do you want to become? Sam: What I'm not. George: What are you now? Sam: I'm nothing. -Why can't you all just die and leave me alone? scream Death Always Wins (the obvious) Sam: What's in my pants in none of your [freaking] buisiness. (After jumping off the cliff) Sam: Hello! Hello!? Oh my God. Hello! George (while bounding in the water): Wahoo! Sam: Unbelievable, I have a total whacko for a father. Sam: I'll hate you for the rest of my life. George: You can't even believe how much I hate my father, think of it as a family tradition! George's Boss (damn, can't think of his name at the moment): How's your wife? George: Well we divorced about a decade ago she was angry, now she's just hostile. My aunt and I watch that movie together all the time. She really likes Kevin Kline, obviously I like Hayden Christensen. Mo mom on the other hand doesn't appreciate it, she get's sick of him always playing the same, angry/ emotionally challenged roles. I suppose everyone has their own taste. Although I would have to say my favorite lines are:
(the obvious) Sam: What's in my pants in none of your [freaking] buisiness.
(damn, you already took the, "Can I take you out?" line.)
George: Well we divorced about a decade ago she was angry, now she's just hostile.
well, that was all I can think of at the moment, and considering how I just woke up, that's all probably wrong. *rubs eyes* It would help if I could read.

Ah yes, I missed those quotes thx (the taking out was my favourite mrgreen )
Yes, the beginning of it scared me, I expected the character was a drug addict, but the aerosol can inhalement and half hanging himself freaked me out... I think that's only coz I saw someone doing that IRL gonk I was quite afraid...

Mrs. Christensen I loved this movie! Although Hayden you scared me half to death in the first couple of scenes! Drugs are BAD! Wooo hoo now this is my kinda film... I'm guessing life as a house is about some kid called Sam (hayden Christensen) and he's kinda messed up.

It's about screwed up Sam and his messed up family, and how the broken relationships are rebuilt alongside the house.
Sam's parents divorced and I think that's one of the reasons why he began hating his family and started rebelling by smoking, doing drugs and weed, and became involved with prostitution gonk he's very moody, throws tantrums:"(screaming)I locked the door! This is my room! Get out! (starts throwing things) Why can't you all just die and leave me alone?"
Sam's real father is fired from his job, and is diagnosed with an incurable cancer so he wants to build a house for his son with his son to make him appreciative of him before he dies. "-Sam: So what were you trying to do? Trying to get me to like you? George: No, Sam, I wasn't trying to get you to like me. I was trying to get you to love me. Sam: Well, congratulations, you f***ing pulled it off!"
Sam's mum and stepfather are growing apart coz the stepfather's always at work and never there for the family. So Sam's mum and real dad fall back in love, and they get a glimpse of a life they could've had if they hadn't divorced and Sam hadn't gone rebel on them.
In the mean time, the girl next door assists Sam deal with his personal emotions, and they become gf/bf because her original bf was a pimp (who did Sam's prostitue and drug dealings) who slept with her mum xp and Sam proves to be a much better person when he's not depressed or under the influence of drugs domokun

It's amazing what one can find on google: this pic includes the scenes (from L to R): Sam (at the sunset) avoiding/refusing to help his father tear down the old house. Sam and Alyssa smooching in the steamy hot shower surprised . Sam hugging his mum after his father has died. Sam with his father before he dies. here's a bigger and better version: http://www.dreamvision-entertainment.com/dvw/laah/laah1.jpg

Woha, its sounds like an emotional movie. I bet I'll cry if I see it, but meh I like the plot line anyway. I think Hayden is really good at acting emotional scenes. Forgive me for stating the obvious.
