I only recently got into doing meditation as a part of the Qi Gong (pronounced "chi gung") that I was introduced to in my martial arts class. From what I have been told, when one gets far enough into meditation, one enters a point deeper than most sleep, where the brain is emitting theta waves. Basically, it creates a means of entering a state in wakefulness that is hard to obtain in sleep. Thus, it would only make sense that one of the side effects of meditating is increased wakefulness. Anyways, I'll admit that when it was mentioned that it was possible to have visions and such while in this state, I was at first skeptical, but already had gotten the very genuine warming effect from my first meditation, so I wanted to see what else there was. My first proper meditation resulted in me seeing different colors swirling in the vision behind my closed eyes, and I remember getting a distinct image, though I personally can't say I'm worried about significance, because for the most part, it's for the experience, the journey, and not trying to achieve a goal. Anyways, my question is if anyone here has done any forms of meditation, and what their thoughts are on such things.

In regards to correct (Proper) meditation, there is no particular state of meditation that you are supposed to achieve, and there really is no absolute right and wrong way to meditate. It's best to put aside the idea of doing it correctly, and of trying to know what state you are in. There are many states that can occur in meditation, and they are all a valuable part of the meditation process.

If you simply follow the guidelines of a particular method, put aside all the expectations, and accept whatever happens, you will begin to find meditation easy and enjoyable

Some Misconceptions about Meditation
Misconception #1. Meditation is turning off your thoughts or making your mind a blank.

Not True ...Inner quietness is experienced in meditation, but not by willfully turning off thoughts. Quieting the mind results naturally from:
the effectiveness of the method used... and
an uplifting spiritual energy that is beyond our own efforts.
Misconception #2. Meditation is difficult and requires great concentration.

Not True ...Meditation can be easily learned and practiced. Meditation is only difficult if we become too concerned with doing it correctly or incorrectly. Although staying focussed in meditation does become easier with time and practice, it is definitely not a requirement for beginning to meditate. Thinking that we should be good at focussing when first starting out, is essentially putting the cart before the horse.

Misconception #3. Meditation is not successful unless we see interesting things in our mind.

Not True...Although some meditations are specifically for visualizing, many are not. In those meditations, seeing things may be entertaining, but is not essential. Even visualization does not necessarily require seeing. Some people sense or feel things inwardly, and that's all right.

You seem to be pretty well learned on the subject. Most of what I've done in the meditation aspect of my Qi Gong has been towards relaxation, though maybe there's some other things mixed in as well. Regardless, I agree that meditation is actually very easy if one lets it happen. Personally, I find meditation to also be a good supplement for sleep, if not quite as restful.

I used to meditate a fair amount, but for whatever reason I've stopped. I have had a couple of times though where I meditated (at roughly 10 or 11am in my old bedroom [which had a sliding glass door behind my bed and a window facing west] in a pair of hot topic pants [100% cotton. ungodly comfortable things]) where I've made my own inner world and walked around inside of it as though I was physically there. I could feel the grass beneath my feet, feel and hear the wind going all around me, see the clouds perfectly, etc. Full sensory immersion. Very interesting experience, one I'd love to do again. That's why I made a note of the time, location, and what I was wearing, to see if those things allow me to do it again or if it was a coincidence that it only happened in those clothes and time/setting.

I'm interested in hearing what you have to say on all of those, especially the last one. And if you know any specific techniques to be fully immersed in a world of your own creation I'd appreciate any input or guidance.

1. Quite a bit of this is quoted
2. Keep in mind that I am no master/guru in meditation and I'm still learning. ( blaugh Matter of fact I've "just" learned a few things from these quotes)
3. These are just basic guidelines for certain meditations.
4. If your that interested in meditation then prepare for alot of reading within these next four posts!

Core Meditations

Mindfullness Meditation

The following meditation is said to be the meditation taught by Gautama Buddha about 2500 years ago. The primary focus is your breathing. However, the primary goal is maintaining a calm, non-judging awareness, allowing thoughts and feelings to come and go without getting enmeshed in them. This calm, accepting, spacious awareness is your Core Self... your Essence.

Steps of Mindfulness Meditation

1. Sit comfortably, with your eyes closed and your spine reasonably straight.

2. Direct your attention to your breathing.

3. When thoughts, emotions, physical feelings or external sounds occur, simply accept them, giving them the space to come and go without judging or getting involved with them.

4. When you notice that your attention has drifted off and become engaged in thoughts or feelings, simply bring it back to your breathing and continue.

5. Remember... it's ok and natural for thoughts to arise, and for your attention to follow them. No matter how many times this happens, just keep bringing your attention back to your breathing.

Benefits of this meditation:

Maintaining your calm inner awareness, balance & clarity in the midst of any situation.
A gradual shift to a higher level of consciousness... centered in the peace, joy & freedom of your Spirit.
Increased insight & clarity... seeing things truly, as they are.
Stress reduction.

Inner Light Meditation

This is a meditation for connecting you with your Inner Spirit.... your essence or core Self. It uses the light that is already within you as an object of focus. It's a fairly simple meditation, but is quite powerful, and potentially very deep.

Steps of Inner Light Meditation

1. Sit comfortably with your eyes closed.

2. Look at the "screen" that fills the space behind your closed eyelids.

3. There will be particles, images, or patterns of light on this screen. (Consider anything that is not pure darkness to be a form of light.) Gently focus your attention on the light.

4. Don't try to create or interpret images. Don't attempt to focus clearly. Simply look at the light with relaxed attention.

5. If you feel as though your consciousness is shifting, or you are slipping into a dreamlike state, allow it to happen. Whatever you experience is ok.

6. If you find you have drifted off into your thoughts, simply bring your attention back to the light.

Benefits of this meditation:

Direct experience of your calm, unbounded Inner Spirit.
Connecting with your Inner Spirit taps a wellspring of spiritual energy. This energy nourishes & enhances all levels of life... physical, emotional, mental & spiritual.
When connected with your Inner Spirit, life flows more effortlessly, & you begin to perceive the world as a more supportive, enjoyable place.
Regular contact with your Inner Spirit catalyzes a gradual shift to a higher level of consciousness... centered in the peace, joy, & freedom of your Spirit.
Relaxation and stress reduction.
Increased flow of fuel to the brain.
Gradual opening of the 6th chakra - the Inner Eye - giving clear insight & inner vision.

Universal Mantra Meditation

The following meditation comes from an ancient Indian text called the Malini Vijaya Tantra, which dates back about 5000 years. It is a very easy meditation, yet very powerful in its capacity to quiet your mind and connect you with your Essence or Inner Spirit.

This meditation uses a mantra as your object of focus. A mantra is a word or phrase that has the power to catalyze a shift into deeper, more peaceful states of awareness. The mantra we will be using for this meditation is: Aum. Aum does not have a literal translation. Rather, it is the essential vibration of the universe. If you were to tune into the actual sound of the cosmos, the perpetual sound of Aummm is what you would hear.

Although this mantra is sometimes chanted aloud, in this meditation, you will be repeating the mantra mentally... silently. Before we get to the actual steps, there are a few important points to be aware of.

* One of the keys to this meditation is repeating the mantra gently or faintly in your mind.

* The power of this technique comes from letting go and allowing your attention to dive into the deeper realms of awareness. Therefore, even though you will be focussing on the mantra, staying focussed on the mantra is not the aim of this meditation. Trying too hard to stay focussed would keep your attention from descending into the deeper realms. Instead, you will be repeating the mantra with "minimal effort", and giving your mind the space to wander a bit.

* I suggest that you resist the temptation to make something happen, and allow the mantra to do the work.

Steps of Universal Mantra Meditation

1. Sit comfortably, with your eyes closed and your spine reasonably straight.

2. Begin repeating the mantra gently in your mind.

3. Repeat the mantra at whatever tempo feels most natural. There is no need to synchronize the mantra with your breathing, but if this occurs naturally, it's ok.

4. Allow the mantra to arise more faintly in your mind... repeating it with minimal effort.

5. Continue repeating the mantra faintly, and allow for whatever happens.

6. If at any time, you feel that you are slipping into a sleep-like or dream-like state, allow it to happen.

7. If and when you notice that your attention has drifted completely off the mantra, gently begin repeating it again, and continue with minimal effort.

8. After 10 or 15 minutes, stop repeating the mantra, and come out of your meditation slowly.

Benefits of this meditation:

Easily produces a shift into deeper, more peaceful states of awareness. (The degree of this will vary from session to session.)
Increases the flow of energy to the brain.
Clears away a good deal of physical/emotional toxins. Because of this detoxification, it is best to keep this meditation to 10 or 15 minutes a day when first beginning. After a month or so, it can be increased to 20 minutes, but that should be the maximum for anyone who does not have quite a few years of meditation experience. Also, it is advisable to drink a lot of pure water. (Detoxification of the body)

Relaxation & Stress Reduction

Relaxation Meditation

1. Sit comfortably with your spine reasonably straight.

2. Allow your eyes to rest comfortably downward, gazing softly, but not focussed on anything.

3. Without closing your eyes completely, let your eyelids drop to a level that feels most comfortable.

4. Continue gazing downward... the act of gazing is your primary focus (rather than the area at which you are gazing). You may notice your breathing becoming more rhythmic.

5. It's ok to let your attention drift a bit. If your eyes become very heavy, it's ok to let them close. If you notice you've come out of your relaxed space, simply bring your attention back to your relaxed downward gaze.

Benefits of this meditation:

Relaxation & stress reduction
Can be used for an effective 2 minute relax & recharge break
Increased alertness

Healing Meditations

Energy Healing Meditation

In this simple healing meditation, you send the powerful healing Life Force directly to the area in need of help. This Life Force is the energy behind all healing. Wherever this energy is flowing and in balance, there is health and well being. Wherever this energy is blocked or out of balance, illness manifests.

Steps of Energy Healing Meditation

1. Sit reasonably straight and close your eyes.

2. Breath slowly, as silently as possible. (Holding your breath after inhaling or exhaling is not recommended.)

3. As you inhale, feel yourself breathing the healing Life Force in through your solar plexus. Picture this Life Force as a very refined, light energy.

4. As you exhale, gently direct this light energy to the afflicted area. If there is not a specific ailing area, disperse this light energy throughout your body as you exhale.

5. Continue until you feel the area has received enough Life Force.

Color Healing Meditation

We are not just our physical selves. We are multi-dimensional beings, composed of an Inner Spirit, a mental body, an emotional body, a vital body, and a physical body.

The energy of these bodies becomes progressively subtler from physical to spiritual. Illness begins with disharmony in one of these energy bodies. If not harmonized, the dis-ease moves outward, effecting the denser bodies, ultimately manifesting as physical illness.

Total healing requires restoring harmony to all of our bodies. This meditation is designed to cleanse and harmonize your various bodies with the healing energies of color.

Steps of Color Healing Meditation

1. Sit comfortably with your eyes closed.

2. Visualize a large ball of radiant Golden light a few inches over your head. Visualize that ball of light slowly descending through your crown, filling your entire being with golden light.

3. Imagine yourself absorbing that light as it nourishes, cleanses & heals your whole being - your Spirit and all of your bodies - dissolving all blocked and toxic energies.

4. Repeat this exercise, visualizing a ball of Red light. Continue through the entire spectrum like this, visualizing a ball of Orange light; Yellow light; Green light; Blue light; Indigo light; and Violet light. Go through the spectrum at whatever pace feels appropriate.

5. Take some time to visualize yourself in a state of perfect, radiant health.

Benefits of this meditation:

Cleansing, balancing, & healing at all levels... Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, Vital, & Physical.

Develops concentration & visualization abilities.

Centering

Centering is meditation in action. Within you is a space that is always calm and at peace. This space is often referred to as your "calm center". Being centered means remaining in your calm center amidst the busyness of everyday life. Being centered means not allowing your inner light to be overshadowed by stressful circumstances or negative thoughts and emotions.

When you are centered, you are in a state of clarity, focus, peace, and balance. When you are not centered, you are unclear, unfocussed, stressed, and off balance.

A good centering technique will require only minimal attention, allowing you to keep some of your attention on the activity at hand. Here are some very easy, effective centering techniques.

1. Simple Breath Awareness
While involved in whatever you are doing, bring some attention to your breathing for just a few moments... it needn't be your full attention... just enough to bring you back to your calm center. Breathe naturally, or perhaps just a little more slowly and deeply.

2. Reclaiming Your Energy
When you are feeling stressed and scattered, take several slow, deep breaths. With each in-breath, imagine you are pulling all of your scattered energy and attention back to your inner self... your calm center.

3. Letting Go
This centering technique combines breath awareness with the phrase or mantra, "Let go." It is especially helpful when you are tense and/or fixating on a stressful situation or a negative thought or emotion.
As you inhale, (silently or aloud) say, "Let"
As you exhale, say "go"... while letting go of all that is stressing you.

4. Inner Sun
Imagine a bright sun filling your heart chakra... the calm, subtle energy field that permeates your chest area. Imagine that sun gently emanating peace and joy throughout your entire being.

What Is Acension?

All spiritual traditions have spoken of the ultimate goal of meditation. It has been called Enlightenment; Self Realization; God Realization; Nirvana; Cosmic Consciousness; Christ Consciousness; Buddhahood; etc. Currently, the term "Ascension" is emerging in our collective consciousness to refer to this goal. So, for consistency, we will use that term. What then, is Ascension?

Ascension is:

* The goal of our individual evolution, and the collective evolution of humanity... it is each soul's destiny.

* A level of consciousness in which we experience permanent union with our Higher Self and the Universal Spirit... oneness with all Life.

* Becoming our highest possible self... Learning to fully express our creative powers and spiritual capabilities within the challenging conditions of physical reality.

* Raising our vibration to a higher frequency...closer to that of the light of Spirit.

* Expanding our perception beyond our limited physical reality to include limitless spiritual reality.

* A state of permanent peace, joy, and freedom from limitation and suffering.

* Becoming an instrument of Universal Light, Love, Wisdom, and Power.

* Expanding the role we are playing within this ever-unfolding universal drama.

* Taking our place among the assembly of ascended beings from all cultures who have reached this evolutionary stage.

* Coming home.

Preparing for Ascension

Planet Earth and humanity are currently going through an extraordinary consciousness shift... a quantum leap to a higher, more enlightened state of being. You can choose to go with the flow of this evolutionary current - thus facilitating your ascension process - by preparing yourself for a new and higher level of consciousness. If you choose to do so, here are some valuable tips to assist you.

Connect with your inner Spirit daily...
in silent meditation or prayer.

Stay in the Light.
Remember as often as you can throughout the day, (when your mind is not fully engaged) to shift your attention back to the light of your calm inner Spirit.

Develop some degree of spiritual non-attachment.
The more weight you give the world, the heavier it is to carry.

Strengthen your energy circuitry, so that you can conduct the higher spiritual energies.
This can be done through regular exercise, physical work, or energy body exercises, such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, etc.

Keep peeling away the internal layers of physical & emotional toxins, & limiting beliefs...
through meditation & other transformational tools available for this.

Learn to attune to your higher guidance.

Lighten up
Regular meditation & other spiritual practices refine your energy, raising your vibration closer to the highest vibration of divine light. Be receptive to your body's wisdom, regarding what you put in your body. And although it is not always easy, try to take yourself lightly.

Ascension Meditation

The following meditation is designed to simulate the ascension experience. It makes use of your imagination - aka visualization - with which you may "see" inwardly, or simply "feel" or "sense" inwardly.

Sit comfortably, with your spine reasonably straight.

Imagine your Higher Self - your Spiritual Self - as a human-sized form of brilliant golden-white light just over your head.

Imagine your Higher Self slowly descending to unite with you... to merge its essence with your essence... transforming your entire being into brilliant golden-white light.

Imagine your surroundings becoming brighter and brighter, until there is nothing but an infinite ocean of golden-white light... the limitless light of Spirit.

Imagine your consciousness gently expanding, becoming one with this limitless light. Remain immersed in the ocean of light for a few minutes, and then slowly come out of your meditation

I don't think theres any real state thats reached during meditation that allows for visions. Colors swirling behind someones eyes is typical when meditating because the eyes are trying to send signals to the brain and the brain can't see anything but partial light. So it sends out whatever to give the eyes a desicription.
I use to meditate when I was younger and found it to be very relaxing for my body and my mind. It's a good practice to get into.
These days I meditate on my back deck as I'm looking at nature. We have nothing but woods behind our house so it's pretty easy to block out the sounds of traffic in the distance.
While I'm out there I think about things in my life, the good and the things I'd like to change. And while I don't try and figure out how to change the things i want to, I always see around me the things that God has created that gives me inspiration and hope. It's a meditative state that brings a great deal of relief.
Thats what meditation is suppose to do for one...help them feel connected to something greater than themselves, something that brings about a deeper understanding and internal peace.

That's a bit different from the meditations that I have done. In mine own, it is to detach myself, and to simply let the meditation bring me where it whims. I've several times gotten very clear images from meditations, though as my master said, if you see visions or are given a message, take them with a grain of salt. So, in the meantime, I continue to do the meditations and other Qi Gong simply because the effects are entirely worth the doing of it. Plus, if it is possible to do such things as entering others' dreams, or sending messages through it the meditations, then it's just an added benefit. That is what meditation is for me. What you explained is almost a precursor to the true meditation that one can enter. It is quieting the mind through contemplation. It can usually be slower, but that was what I did before I learned Qi Gong.

What you described doing is what I use to do as a teenager. Complete peace in the house, in a sitting position, take deep cleansing breathes and closing my eyes as I sought to enter the meditative state that was reccomended by the books I use to get on the subject.
Theres a point I would reach where I could feel as if everything around me was not there. Indeed it was nice to not think about anything but to let my mind just go. For one who thinks to much the mind can get cluttered and loud.
But care is needed because there are those in all faiths, beliefs and religions who would mislead. The lama that the beatles followed, and many others followed, was exposed to be a fraud and just another spiritual leader seeking peoples money and any fame they could gleen.
These days my money stays in my pocket, and I spend my time reflecting on God.

I don't pay a cent, partly because my master, teaching the kenjutsu and many other things, refuses to. If money gets involved, things become corrupt. The main reason I meditate is to increase my chi and to get to the point that I can eventually use it in way that are beneficial to me and others, whether it be through healing, or if I get good enough, maybe even through a form of telepathy.

The main reason I meditate is to increase my chi and to get to the point that I can eventually use it in way that are beneficial to me and others, whether it be through healing, or if I get good enough, maybe even through a form of telepathy.

I may not agree with your form of meditation and the results you believe you get but, one thing we do see eye to eye on money corrupting everything. 3nodding

The less believable aspects only come with mastering one's chi, which I'm a long way from. And yes, we do agree on that aspect of money, at any rate.
