this is a speech I made for my academic decathlon class
Consider if you will, people such as Alexander the great or Julius Caesar and consider
why they are great, why they stick out more than other leaders, and why after over
2,000 years history hasn’t forgotten them; we still know who they were and what
they did. I believe that there is a quality that they had in common, the quality that made
them great was a vision for their world to be united and for people of all classes and
cultures to be equal. This desire led them to war with any one who opposed. In the case
of Alexander the Great, he wanted a world where it didn’t matter if you were Greek or
Persian, he wanted every one to be united, embracing other cultures instead of fighting
them. Julius Caesar was born a lower class person, but through his
skills and hard work rose to be leader of the Roman world. What made him great was his
reforms making the rich and the poor more equal than at any time before.
2008- a presidential election year. Of all the many candidates
republican and democrat, I have to ask myself, who best shows qualities like
those great leaders of the past; who has the most potential to be a
great leader themselves? History has shown us that those leaders who were best able to
unite the peoples they led, and who were most successful at establishing equality among
their citizens, were viewed as the most effective leaders in history.
Looking at the candidates I see the democratic
leader’s are split between those who have experience and those who offer change
and reform. The republican leaders are split between sending more troops over seas
to fight terrorism and those advocating bringing them home. I believe that an ideal
candidate should bring change and reform while still having enough experience to know
what their doing. An ideal candidate should instill confidence in the voters and inspire
allegiance and devotion to his cause. When I look to the political candidates of today I
want to see a leader. I want to support a candidate with vision, a candidate that wants to
unite America, not divide us and point out factions or sub groups. I want a leader who
strives to create equality for all of this countries classes and cultures. I want a leader bold
enough to map out a course for this nation and be charismatic enough to cause the nation
to follow his leadership. It is not that I expect that among our current state of
presidential hopeful’s there lurks a Julius Caesar or an Alexander but an Ideal candidate
would be the one who best combined the attributes of a vision for a strongand united
America and a country which truly reflected the original ideal put forth in our
constitution, a land where all men are created equal.
